To K1 or not K1 - that is the question?

In reading a lot of the full frame threads over the years here, and taking a position that a full frame was probably not in my foreseeable future, the announcement of the K1 has me thinking - yet again.
  • Need / Want / Value - A lot of folks have been waiting for so long to get back to the full frame format, the decision was easy. For me, I certainly would like one - but there is no real specific need. The larger question is the value. What is the value - or what is it worth to me to move up to the big leagues?

The post - 10 Things that Make the Pentax K-1 Unique, clarified a number of things - but also clouded things for me. So, let me walk through this for myself and try to figure out what I should do.

Last year, I finally got off the mark and opted for a set of cropped lenses - the Sigma 18-35/1.8 for astro and the DA 60-250/f4 with the 1.4 TC for everything telephoto. I mainly shoot landscapes, cityscapes, astro - mainly stuff that does not move. So, along with the K1 body, I should consider the DFA 15-30/f2.8. My widest FF lenses are 20, 25, 28 and 31. So, this bounds my cost at around $1800 for the body and $1500 for the lens - totaling $3300. I'll punt on the question - if my skills are sufficient enough to warrant the costs, for now.
  • Lens - Well the 15-30/2.8 has been pretty well reviewed to compare with the Nikon 14-24/f2.8. In the portrait orientation, I would get an additional 30 degrees in field of view (over the Sigma 18-35), which would really help in the astro - however at the expense of a bit of sharpness (each pixel would just have more area to represent - but there would be double the pixels). So this would be some what of an advantage to bump up.

  • Lens Speed / Aperture - The K1 would add about a stop in light collecting - with everything else being equal (ISO 1600). This would augment the lens - the 15-30/2.8 and essentially bump its apparent performance to about f2, which is a third of a stop slower than my current K5IIs & Sigma 18-35/1.8 combination for astro. Essentially, this would be a push - all things being equal. I would not gain a lot, nor really loose anything.

  • K1 Body Features - Integrated GPS is there. The tilting monitor would help a lot for night stuff, along with the LCDs (red would be better, though). Monitor brightness would be a plus. Tethering might help. The 5 axis SR should help a lot by removing the star trailing on the extreme edges of the frame with my K5IIs, so I could go back up to 2 and possibly 3 minutes for the Milky Way shots. At a minimum it would be a push, but more in the way of a nice reasonably large bump up - which would be nice.

So, that brings me back to the question of money and skill. Is my skill worth the $3K cost at this time? I don't know. The more I shoot the better I get. With retirement looming later this year, I'll have more time and opportunity to work on this.

But, this is needs to be asked in the context of my original plans which was to wait and look at the K3 replacement. For the sake of argument, I need to assume (at least for now) that the K3 replacement will essentially be the K1 with a cropped sensor - all the creature features pulled forward - with an estimated announcement date of later this year and availability early 2017 - just a wild a$$ guess. The price would be capped by the K1, so - no K1 discount in the foreseeable future - so I would figure on $1300 which was about the same price as the K3.

The safe approach would be to wait for the K3 replacement and see what it offers and costs - which was my original plan. The other aspect to all of this is support utilities.
  • L Bracket - which lives welded to the body I use. Is one going to be available for the K1 and / or K3 replacement? Usually RRS comes through on this, but no announcement yet.

  • Pano head - will the K1 be too large / heavy for it. It should be right on the margin.

I guess kicking the can down the road would be the safest decision and just wait and see how things turn out.... Also, watching the early adopters, and see the amount of drool their threads create.

When looking for and buying lenses after I bought my first DSLR, the *istDS, I have always kept an upcoming FF in mind. Over a decade I have built a lens collection ranging from 15mm to 600mm, all Pentax original and high quality including four *-lenses. Being patient and knowing what I want, I have got them all at decent prices, quite a few as bargains.
When the Pentax FF was announced (the mock-up), my first concern was wether the old glass would perform on a digital FF. The second was wether the viewfinder would allow easy-enough manual focusing with the A*85mm f1.4. Thirdly I wondered about and feared for the price.
So when the K-1 finally arrived, at a price I hadn't dared to hope for, there were only two questions left. I could test the viewfinder at a come-and-try-event and the reviews from test-shooters with old glass was reaffirming.

After spending a life catering and spending for girlfriends, x girlfriends, wife, kids, friends in a tight position and whatnot, now it's my turn. I have a decent income, last kid has left the building, wife approves, I won't get any younger.
Do I need it? H*ll no. Will I use it to it's full potential? Joking? Do I want it? H*ll yes! Will I buy it? Already preordered. After ticking YES! in three boxes ordering the camera was easy. What's not so easy is the waiting for delivery. Pain, lots of pain...

That's good news on the 150-600. Not surprised on the others though.

I hope Sigma make the 120-300/2.8 in K-mount next. That with a T/C is all I'd ever want for long fast glass.

Just hope Pentax finally have a competitive AF system in the K-1, something that can keep up.

I like hearing this, because growing up, a 35mm camera and lens kit wasn't a trivial purchase among my family or even in my greater community - you were either 'rich' or an obsessive hobbyist if you had a 35mm camera. Being a participant in a forum of enthusiasts for the past 9 years has made question my own experience at times... like maybe I had it wrong. It's nice to see people who have a shared appreciation for the relative rarity of our hobby, and a big reason for that rarity is cost, if we're being honest.

Yes. Or to put it another way, it will allow a new avenue of appreciation that's really a walk down an old avenue.

As an APS-C shooter, I used to get cranky when people posted things like that to justify a FF camera. Now I find myself looking forward to seeing what that really means. Apologizes to those I took to task for that sentiment over the last couple of years. Times do change...........................

Yes - and now we can chase each other round and round the tree about not actually seeing what I am photographing. What's the refresh rate of my retinas?

I don't want to use an EVF. I don't want to use an adapter. Full Stop.

BD- Congrats on making it this far! And with one wife, that is awesome! You deserve a nice 150-500 for a bonus.

But seriously, although I know newer lenses have been designed with the digital sensors in mind, I have been using the older FF lenses (older adaptamatic tamrons, Pentax A and Sigma) on my K7 and they have worked quite nicely. I look forward to having the FF sensor for the resolution and lack of the anti aliasing screen for the sharpness. I even have some old screw mount lenses and an A bellows for macro (they REALLY work well)! This year I can look forward to April, instead of just dreading the tax bill coming up! I hope you can do the same!

Some of my story is similar to yours; I bought a Pentax ME SE when my rangefinder camera was ruined in an exotic incident my then-fiance and I had just before we were married; four years later I bought the Pentax Super Program when the ME SE never quite recovered from getting damp at a later trip to Niagara Falls. However, for many years I had just two lenses, a Pentax-A 50mm and a Vivitar 75-205mm {which I bought with the first holiday bonus I received}. If I were to find the dollars to buy a K-1, I would probably move back to that pattern, at least for now. I still have that 50mm lens; I had to dump the Vivitar lens because of serious fungus, but I did buy a Tamron AdaptAll 60-300mm lens with a KA back, and I would be quite happy to go back to my old patterns {*} using those two lenses if I could just figure out how to raise the cost of a K-1.

{*} My style has been more "Weegee" Fellig ["f/8 and be there"] than artistic, so I've always tended to work at mid-range apertures and the resulting comfortably thick DOFs. Under those conditions, practice with my K-30 convinces me that the Pentax "focus confirmed" signal is more than adequate for my 68-year-old eyes to achieve the manual focus I need.

Go big or go home, LOL!

I like mine, and I think you'll like yours. I cheerfully admit to not having mastered it yet - I seem to get better results casually when shooting with my AF200Sa thyristor flash - but when I get it right, it's really great (and the AF200Sa does not do bounce).

What I need is food, shelter and social relations that makes me human. The rest is for joy and fun.
And since I can afford it, it's more fun to have the best versus the very good.

Was that taken with the AF-540FGZII ... ? Nice portrait, I like the side lighting soft contrast on the face. Glad to have helped and I'm sure you are going to enjoy working with the new Pentax flash, which has a really nice design and interface and is compact for it's power....oh, and I guess type you're looking forward to the K1 as well. :)

In fact, when comparing fps, it seems to me that people often leave out megapixels from the equation, resulting in "apples and oranges" comparisons.

It is not AT ALL surprising if a 24MP camera (D610) has higher fps than K-1, a 36MP camera. Of course.

The data flow rate is around 33% lower for a 24MP camera, so it's only expected and natural that the fps will be higher.

We might as well say the D810 (5fps, 36MP like K-1) is sub-standard compared to D610 (6fps, 24MP) !!! If that sounds ridiculous, same goes for K-1, which is also 36MP.

In fact, if anything it is the 6D (4.5fps) which could be seen as "sub-standard", when compared to D610 (6fps), because both are 20 to 24MP machines, same ballpark.

And again, in comparing the K-1 against D810 we're talking 4.4fps versus 5fps, and that works out to 9 frames in every 2 seconds versus 10 frames every 2 seconds. The difference is just one frame. Doesn't seem like a significant difference in real world usage. Indeed if high fps is what is really required, eg for sports, then arguably 36MP is not optimum, may be better to go for lower resolution but higher fps, eg K-3 (24MP, 8.3fps).
