First Shots with my K-r

Thank you everyone with the kind words. I was really pleased with the 55-300 lens. I did have some issues getting the lens to focus correctly when I had the CPL attached. I'm sure that I'm not doing something correctly with the settings. I tried shooting mostly in Av mode, although I really had no idea what I was doing. It is going to take me a while to recognize what settings will work best in different light situations. When that finally happens, who knows what kind of pics I will turn out :D

Yes, these were all taken with the DA L 55-300. The 4th pic with the cruise ship had a CPL filter on it. I did very little PP work on these - just a little cropping and contrast adjustments - that's about all I know how to do right now in photoshop....still learning PP as well :D

Well, I got my K-r a few days before the kids and I headed for Cabo San Lucas. I took hundreds of photos. It's obvious that I have a lot to learn, but I think a few of them turned out ok?

So I finally got the K-r....thank you B&H!!
I have had it for about 8 days now. The problem is that it has been raining here a lot and I haven't had a lot of time to actually try it out too much
I have been taking shots of the kids in the house and fooling around with the settings and such. Plus, I've been able to have time to read the manual as well as other useful tutorials. So maybe the bad weather has been a blessing!
Anyway, I am excited because on Sunday the kids and I are headed to Cabo San Lucas. No bad weather there! Just a lot of sun, ocean and beach (and some big fish) :D
For this trip, I did pick up a CPL filter for my DA L 55-300. Hopefully, I can get up to speed on this camera enough to take some decent photos next week!

So I stuck to my guns and ordered the K-r with the DA L 55-300. It should be here tomorrow! I also ordered a lens hood (went with the cheapo rubber collapsible one for now), a IR remote control, and now am looking at different filters. Until I get a little more familiar with the hobby, I think I will stick with a UV filter and a circular polarizer....maybe a ND filter.
C'mon UPS man!!!:D

Best Hood for DAL 55-300

Thank you everyone for the input!
Looks like there are essentially three different styles to choose from....
cylinder, petal or the 3-way rubber.
Do any of these have a significant advantage over the other for my 55-300?

Hey all,

While reading this, please keep in mind that I am a newbie and still trying to learn the ins and outs!
I will be receiving my K-r next week. It's the kit with the DA L 55-300 lens. Being the DA L series, I know it won't be coming with a lens hood. Is a hood a good investment? If so, what size, make model of hood should I be looking for??

Thank you!

Spring hasn't sprung in Idaho yet. It won't be long and I get my K-r on Tuesday, so it should be good timing!

K5 Pentax Extended Warranty on Back Order?

Called B&H yesterday to order the K-r. I wanted the 2 year extended warranty, but I knew they were on backorder.
Rob (salesperson) convinced me to go ahead and pay for the warrantly, and the paperwork will be shipped to me once they have it in stock. He indicated it would take a week or so.
I hope Rob was right!

I kinda figured "Tungsten light" meant the standard incadescent bulb, but I wasn't positive. Kinda feel like a dumba$$

Oddly enough, I wrote this post - went to lunch - came back and the bonus check I was waiting for to purchase my camera was sitting on my desk!

Thank you very much for the input. I was hoping for a few responses like this as I knew that not everyone was bitter about the FF problem and/or there were ways around it.

Guess I better figure out which retailer to buy from!

Reconsidering

This is the week I finally make my forst dSLR purchase, and for several weeks my mind was set on the K-r.
I have to admit though, that there has been a lot of negative talk about this camera lately, especially the FF issue and this is making me really re-evaluate my choice.
Being a relative newbie, I honestly don't know how much this perceived issue will affect me. To be even more honest, I'm not sure I even know what "tungsten lighting" is.
The main reason for me upgrading to the dSLR is to take pictures of my kids and their outdoor sporting events, wildlife, and landscape. I'm sure that there will be several occassions where I will want to take impromptu pics in the house as well. I chose the K-r for it's features, IQ, ergonomics, and the fairly good reviews of the 300mm kit lens - all of this at a very good price point for me.
That said, I am asking for some impartial advise from the more seasoned users to see if the FF issue is really something that will disappoint me given my intended use. Should I really be looking elsewhere? This post is not intended re-hash all of the negativity. I am merely asking someone to explain to me the consequences (if any) in terms that a newbie can understand.

Thank you!

K-R Filters & Extras

Hey Chuck.......I am interested in the answers to these questions as well.
I am certainly getting a remote. I have several applications where I will want one (i.e. pictures with kids). I will also be getting a tripod, though it will probably not be one of the high end models - just one that I can carry around with me rather easily. Already have a bag from a previously owned film SLR.
Here is one thing I have read about filters though. If you are buying a UV filter just to protect your lens, it might be better to go with just a lens hood. This obviously does not apply if your are shooting in a location where there is a lot of sand or debris. I have read that a lens hood will still protect your lens from "bumps and bruises", yet it won't effect the IQ. Some claim that a UV filter will negatively effect your IQ.

Can a more seasoned user confirm or deny this??

I will probably eventually get some of the other filters (i.e. polarizing and neutral density) because of the special effects they produce.

I am feeling exactly the same way!! My little Nikon CoolPix is a neat little camera, but I am ready to move into a whole new world of photography.
A promo code would be nice, but I don't know if I will have Chuck's patience!
I am leaning towards B&H.....I have worked with them before (years ago I was a videographer), and they were awesome. Plus, after exploring this forum I noticed the relationship between this community of Pentax users and B&H. Hopefully I can place the order next week, just waiting on a bonus check!

K-r will be my first! But where??

Hello all, I am new here and am excited to join this forum!

After extensive research (my boss would probably not appreciate the amount of time I have spent doing this), I have decided to purchase the K-r as my first dSLR.
I was originally looking at the K-x and the comparable Canon and Nikon models, but it seems like the K-r is the way to go when you consider optical quality, price, functions, etc.
I am new to the dSLR world. The vast majority of my photos will be of kids, kids' sports, wildlife, scenery, etc. I am looking at the K-r kit that includes the DA L 55-300. From what I've read, this could be a good lens for me to start with.
I'm sure that this question has been asked and answered before on this forum, but I really need some good advise on which online retailer to go through. Needless to say, there are a ridiculous amount of "retailers" out there and it seems like you can interpret the reviews any way you want.
I am leaning towards B&H, however, they are a little more expensive than some of the others (Tri-state, Abe's) and I do need to be conscious of $$.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you and I can't wait to get this going!!

Chad
