I tried to toggle the SR on and off a few times, and now SDM works just fine. I hope it's not a sign..!!! Lens was bought new, two years ago at SRS in England.

Is it normal behaviour that autofocus with this lens not to work, when SR is disabled?

I would highly recommend back button focus! Makes You able to prefocus and then just fire away. Takes a little getting used to, though.

Maybe you already thought of this, but it might be a good idea to think of a way to back up your memory cards!! They are small, and if you carry them in some sort of wallet, someone could think of it as a way to cover the 'taxes'!!

How about F70-210?? It's very underrated IMO - but check the forum database. You should be able to find for 50-80$

I'm lucky enough to own that lens, and I can only say, that it's worth every penny - IMO! (130$) You can, of course compare to any lens you want, but it doesn't change the fact, that this lens has something that others don't. I find it very special.

Depending on which lens you are using, you should clean the electrical contacts. If you have another lens, try switching it, and see if the problem is still there. If yes, the problem will be located to the camera. You could also try a factory reset ( don't forget to write your settings down before.

Had the same problem with my Super Tak 50, 1.4 and a third party adaptor on my K5IIs! As soon as I got the original Asahi Pentax adaptor, everything was fine. I think it was around 40 USD, but it's worth trying before taking it apart.

In Pentax Photo Gallery, under 'Camera and Lenses*, there are many examples of photos taken with HD DA 1.4x converter.
