The k-30 is an amazing camera and deserves all its positive reviews. I hope the jump from the k-5 to k-3 will be as big as the k-r to k-30 jump!

Awesome review, thanks :) I was looking at one of these because my ball head has a loose screw now and I'm saving up for a Benro Travel Angel, getting a cheapo ballhead to last me for the duration would be helpful.

Pentax SMC DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED vs kit lens?

I got my new 16-50 2 days ago. I still have my kit lens and I've got to say the 16-50 much sharper and brighter. The lens is not as big and heavy as some people make it out to be. With the hood it looks bigger but just by itself it looks slightly bigger than average but not noticeable. I love the SDM, plenty of people complement the k-5 for its quiet shutter speed, but that quiet shutterspeed is useless with the loud AF noise, with the SDM its quiet focusing and quiet shooting. The weather sealing is also a great bonus, you never have to worry when it starts drizzling. With regards to the failures, buy something like a Mack 7 year warranty 1017 Mack 7 Year Warranty for Lenses Valued $600.00 to $1000.00. you can find it cheaper at ebay I got mine for just over $20. That's 7 years knowing if the SDM fails you are covered, the Mack warranties are also transferable ($20 fee if I'm not mistaken) so if you do decide to sell it you can still say it has a warranty and makes moving it much easier.

Why the D-800(E) is not worth jumping-ship for

I have no interest in switching for another year or so but the post just screams fanboy.

0. Pentax might, but theyre too busy thinking of other colours they can sell their cameras and making mirrorless cameras. Considering how much they talk about mirrorless, at this point it wouldnt surprise me if they switch to pure mirrorless in the next few years.
1. Like sensors new lens designs improve optics too. I think compared to Pentax nikon has a good history of constantly updating and improving their lenses.
2. Not everyone is interested in sports and wildlife.
3. Refer to pt. 0, thats in the very low chance that Pentax comes out with FF.
4. They never had in body to start with but many of their lenses have stabilisation.
5. Fantasy, Pentax has been sitting on its ass with glasses for years now. Even Sigma and Tamron are beating Pentax's top lenses in terms of IQ.
6. Possible on the low chance that pentax comes out with an FF camera
7. The only true thing, but if tests comes out and it does beat k-5 this point could be invalidated as well.

Check out the survey results at SDM Reliability Survey Results - PentaxForums.com

I think Pentax quietly improved the motors on the SDM during 2010 and theyre much more reliable now. I recently had to do so much research on this for my DA*16-50 purchase which I got today. Just make sure to get one of those 7 year Mack warranties, theyre quite cheap at around $30 for peace of mind.

How many people here are optimistic for Pentax's future? ^_^

Unlike most here I don't really particularly care about Pentax's future. I have the camera I want and the set-up I want. If Pentax goes down it doesn't matter, its not like my gear will disappear with them. But I am interested in their (imo bad) strategy to stay relevant in the modern world.

For one thing Pentax says (in the past at least) they don't have the resources to take on Canon, Nikkon, Sony in the full frame format. So, instead they try to take them on in the APS-C format which has more competition. Now theyre trying to go into the mirrorless market. The mirrorless market to me is more saturated. Okay Canon has no mirrorless option right now and Nikon only has the 1, but its a no brainer Canon/Nikon will go there soon, so not only will they be competing against Canon and Nikon they will have to compete against Fuji, Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Olympus. I don't know about you but that seems like more competition to me. Pentax is at a disadvantage in the mirrorless format too since they decided/have to stick with the K-mount. So they will be fighting with one hand tied behind their backs as they can never make their cameras as slim and small as the pure mirroless designed cameras.

When apple released the iPad they had the whole tablet market to themselves. Did other manufacturers go "oh nah they have that market cornered", nope they went "wow theres this whole market (pie) and theres only 1 manufacturer having that pie, we want some of that pie". Now, apple still has a big percent of that pie but the android tablets are catching up. In DSLR world however there that full frame pie and theres 2 manufacturers sharing the pie, other manufacturers are too wimpy to try to take that pie, kudos to sony for trying. (I know sony is failing but I see different reasons for why they failed) Don't even get started on full frame range finders, Leica has that pie to themselves. Petax should have made a full frame range finder for $3000 to take on Leica's $9000 monster but instead they release the Q(the worlds tiniest sensor with an interchangeable lens) an $800 monster to take on legions of $100 tiny cameras.

Pentax is trying to make cheap things expensive, instead of making expensive things cheap

YES! That + that with a full frame sensor (if leica can fit one in a body that size I'm sure pentax can) at around $3,000. :D

Full Frame Digital Pentax?

There's more reason to go FF than just IQ. Even then, a lot of people agree that full frame is better, and mathematically it is better. The main reasons I would like to get a FF camera are:

1. Larger Viewfinder
2. Finer D.O.F. control (it can go much much smaller)
3. Better IQ
4. To satisfy my tech side

Sure the 645D can satisfy all those, but then the 645D does not use the K-mount. It's not an upgrade path, it's essentially the same as buying into a new system and costs much much more than many FF cameras (5D/D700).

Price Matching in Aussie

Australia is a small market with a relatively high minimum wage, plenty of taxes and above average consumer laws (require more for the stores in terms of warranty and guarantee). This all adds up to higher prices.

Australia is also a globalised country, what this means is that the people in Australia can purchase stuff from overseas. Parallel importing is not illegal. So Australians have the right to choose to buy overseas. Obviously by doing this you lose the benefits of buying locally.

We have people complaining that Australian prices are high despite overseas prices. There is nothing stopping them from buying overseas... well, there is one, the benefits of buying locally. What does this mean? This means that buying locally provides better value (value in terms of benefits received rather than in terms of price). This increase in value in turn means that there should also be an increase in price (economically speaking).

So what can we do about it? We can choose to purchase overseas and force the retailers to sell at a lower price because they will see how much customers they are losing. This is ofcourse a double edged sword, there is a possibility that the retailers are already selling items for they best price they canand are forced to close shop, thus we as customers may lose the option to choose to purchase locally entirely. Or it could also go the otherway and the retailers lower the prices because they were just profiteering.

What can YOU do about it? Choose what is right, if you think they are profiteering purchase overseas, if you honestly believe that the price they set is the best they can set it to while still earning a profit (ie, while still having a reason to sell the items -- whats the point of selling things just to break even, you may as well not sell it at all if the result will be the same... 0 profit), then purchase locally.

Australia is a free market economy. Do what you think is right and the market as a whole will decide the outcome.

Pentax K-r firmware update 1.01

Ahh theres the reason for the firmware delay, they've been too busy thinking of new colours!

At this point I think there is no firmware update, Pentax seems to be satisfied with the "workaround" that they had emailed to everyone that complained about the issue. So just take your cameras go outside and take photos and enjoy your camera!

Prices going up because of the disaster?

I don't think its wrong to talk about prices etc just because a tragedy happened somewhere. After all, it really doesn't make a difference. It's not like if we speculate about prices (or about other things such as firmwares), it will somehow make the tragedy worst or if we stop talking about it, it will lessen the tragedy. For most of us, what we do doesn't affect the people of Japan, the world doesn't have to stop. We pay our respects, do what we can (for many of us there is not much we can do besides giving a donation here and there) and keep going on with our lives.

In keeping with the topic, it really depends if the earthquake affected the areas where our cameras are produced (the k-r itself is made in Philippines) so supply is unlikely to take a hit, as a result prices should remain the same. Cameras also do not have a very elastic supply-demand curve compared to oil, so prices shouldn't move too much.
