Bingo! Changing the bulb menu setting did the trick.

The unit has a Vivitar label, but is the same as others with different brands.

Thanks Steve

Timed Exposure Using Cable Shutter Release

I have tried to do a timed shutter release using two different units on both my K1 and K3 with no luck. Camera in bulb mode.

The camera shutter will open when I press the "timer start stop" button on the unit, the red light will be on, and the unit will start counting down from the selected exposure time (i.e., "long"). However, when the count down gets to zero and the red light goes out, the camera shutter remains open - until I hit "timer start stop" again. It refuses to shut off automatically.

I feel I must be doing something wrong, but I don't know what. (Manual on/off and hold works just fine; just auto timer is a puzzle. And, even though I'm just requesting one shot, I have tried setting the interval time to a few seconds greater than the desired exposure time - no luck, same results).

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,

Fred

I'll accept "somewhat weaker", but not the DPR comment "... better bring your kindle along while you wait for auto focus lock..." - please!

I've used Pentax exclusively since the K20D (K7, K5, K3, now K1), and each model still seems to get the same knock - best Pentax autofocus yet, but still awful!

Is it really that bad? I find that hard to believe (though I've never shot with Nikon or Canon).

And which cameras are they comparing the K1 autofocus to? The D810 full frame? The D500 crop?

I personally find the K1 a real joy to use. Granted, when shooting birds in flight in full frame mode, it's frames/sec is low, and it's buffer runs out quickly; but, I suspect the same would be true with the D810. In crop mode, it's much faster - and I get my fair share of good frames. But, honestly, I'll use my K3 with the extra reach for most wildlife.

I find the K1 autofocus a noticeable improvement over the K3, and not at all AWFUL, as DPR and Tony Northrup ( but not Chris at The Camera Store) would have you believe.

But, it is apparently behind Nikon and Canon - would appreciate comments from Nikon and Canon users as to how much behind.

Let's remember, the K1 was not intended as an action/sports camera.

Hopefully, the update to the K3 in the next year or so, will address the autofocus achilles heel, and maybe even rival the Nikon d500 (?!)

Hi,

for composite mode, there are three choices - average, additive, and bright.

I've tried bright and it seems to do a good job.

What do you folks find works best?

Thanks

thanks jbinpg, I will give all that a try (next dark night).

I reread the documentation for astrotracer and saw no reference to the compass screen; I agree that the documentation is poor.

I just spoke to someone yesterday who got a K1 a while back precisely for the astro tracing function, but he could never get it to work to his satisfaction, said pentax support was no help, and finally returned the camera in frustration.

I think he should have tried pentax forum.

Thanks much for the help.

Hey, thanks all for the responses; this is more complicated than I thought.

jbinpg - If I do precise calibration successfully in the astro on/off menu, I shouldn't also need to do calibration (gps/compass menu) as well, should I?

int obs - Didn't realize I needed to be in bulb mode for astro to work; that may be my whole problem right there. However, on the K1, I don't see the "start" menu item you refer to. The menu (camera #3) allows you to turn astro on/off and do a precise calibration, then in bulb mode, you can use the green button to either set the timer for automatic off, or just use bulb and hit the shutter button twice for on/off.

Please explain.

Thanks much for the help.

I'm having a hard time seeing any differences with astrotracer, even though I think I'm doing it correctly - astrotracer on, gps on (green), calibration ok, 17-35 mm lens, f3.5, 30 sec, iso 1600, manual focus, less than 45 deg angle - can't really see any difference with it on/off (granted, star trails are small rectangles, but I was expecting pinpoints with tracer on).

What might I be missing?

Thanks

interval composite mode

I was out shooting star trails in big bend np using mt K1 and interval composite mode. The results came out fine, except that I thought checking the "save process" box would save each individual frame, in case I wanted to reprocess in post. However, the camera just saves each current composite frame (even in raw), as it continues building towards a final result.

Is there any way to do a composite in camera, and still save each individual (non composite) frame?

Thanks much for your advice.

Have a new K1 and have started playing with astrotracer and "precise calibration", but the calibration often fails, even though I rotate the camera in three directions (without dropping!).

Is there a preferred way to do this calibration?

thanks much; great camera

agree; can't be obsessive; but, good to know you can remove the screen on the K1 if so desired.

My K1 viewfinder has a tiny spot in the corner - no big deal, but got me to wondering if it can be cleaned (by me).

My K3 has interchangeable viewfinders that can easily be removed; can that also be done with the K1?

Thanks much

LR6 does not yet have a calibration profile for the new 28-105. Should I use another, like for the 150-450?

Thanks much guys. I suspect the effect may depend a great deal on the image(s) taken and the lens used, but at least now I see how to process it in DCU. LR6CC still seems to get colors wrong on some shots (indoors).

I don't understand - how are you processing pixel shift images on computer, when the camera is automatically combining the images and only outputting it's final result?

Thanks

Considering the size, weight, and price of the 150-450 F4.5-5.6, I'm now toying with the idea of just adding a second 1.4 TC to my DA*200 F2.8 to give me a 400 F5.6. Image quality with one TC is excellent with this prime; wonder what adding a second would do, and how auto focus would be?

Sure would be a lighter weight and cheaper alternative.
