I attended a local car show recently with my old faithful K10D and humble 18-55 kit lens. It's actually a good combo for this type of thing if the light is good. Mine was the only "camera" in a sea of cellphones (afaik). I must have looked impressive as I was composing shots thru a large black device with a viewfinder instead of an LCD, since someone asked if I was a "pro" :)

DD: I was trying to agree with you and elaborate as others have noted. Sorry for my unclarity. I guess I could/should have prefaced with "Yes, and..." in my OP.

Lately I have been shooting film with my 1959 Nikon S3 rangefinder, but just bought a Pentax 70 Limited for my 10 year old K3. 24 mp is plenty and I use it regularly. I still think the Pentax cameras I have owned were hard to beat: Spotmatic, KX, LX. I loved them as much as my Leicas. I’ve also owned and used 6x6, 4x5, 8x10 and have had a home darkroom. There is no such thing as an obsolete camera. Cell phones are just the modern box camera. I don’t remember the last time I saw another Pentax camera in the wild. Ricoh reps visit camera retailers only very very rarely. Very few dealers left.

On a good number of photography websites, the pentax user is made to feel like an american paratrooper who leapt out of his c47 on D Day over normandy, and managed to land on the local gestapo barracks parade ground..

Tally for both digital and film cameras in my photography classes this semester:
Digital: Canon 18, Nikon 12, Pentax 3 (K70), Sony 1. (All DSLRs except one mirrorless.)
Film: Canon 4, Nikon 3, Pentax 2 (K2 and P3), Minolta 1.

And as a bonus, an ex-student just upgraded to medium format and bought a Pentax 645.

Much to my surprise, while walking in a local park near the pavilion where some workers were constructing the winter skating rink, one of the workers spied my K-1 and asked about it, and even if I had upgraded it to a K-1 II. He even knew what lens was on the body, correctly naming the focal range, (i.e., 24-70/2.8). I did not chat with him long because his co-worker started getting impatient. He must have been a "closet Pentaxian".

I've always thought that the Nikon users were just a smidge smarter than the Canon ones and were able to put their lens hoods on the right way round. I wonder what he thinks it's for? Does he know it's detachable?

I am not a teacheer nor a professional but the photos I get from my K-70 with the kit 18 - 135 are wonderful. Personally, I think in the right hands, almost any camera with a quality sensor, good lenses, and sufficient pixels for enlarging an image, is capable of taking appropriate and adequate photos of great image quality and providing a professional result. That having been said, I would include the K-70 in that grouping.

Clackers' Beginners Tip 34: The 'Rule' of Odd Numbers

Five bottles of wine are definitely more interesting than 4 bottles. But six bottles???

This odd number phenomenon typically has a practical limit at 7 (perhaps even 5) as once we have too many items it becomes difficult for the eye to grasp the number with a quick scan.

We tend to do a similar thing with visual divisors (i.e.lines) within shapes. For example, a line close to the center looks wrong (you missed the center), while if the line is moved a bit farther away from center it looks as though it is where it should be.

Clackers' Beginners Tip 34: The 'Rule' of Odd Numbers

I've never heard of the rule of odd numbers, so it's new to me. I however heard of the rule of 3, or at least the rule of less than 7 (could be two, four, or six), the reason being not to overload cognitive capabilities of the human brain and compositional balance. For instance, you could have a composition with 51 elements in it, 51 is an odd number, but the composition would have low impact due to cognitive overload (unless it's about to show a repetitive pattern, in which case it doesn't matter if the number of cycles is odd or even). The rule of three (odd) or four (even) is used all the time in speeches, articles, books, and images (notice the 4 elements in the sentence) , because it's low effort for the brain to process in short term memory.

Turning K-3/3 into street camera :)

21 on a k3iii gives a similar perspective to fa 31 on k1. The FA 28 and FA 35 or DA 35 are additional options to consider. The 40 is nice but long for a lot of people in street shooting. I’ve used it and like it. The 21 is similar to 30-35mm rangefinders which are some of the best street cameras. 20-40 is a good way to decide.

The 21 versus 40 is a personal choice that depends on your tastes in FoV (21 gets more of the background and has more depth of field) and your personal comfort in approaching the subject (40 lets you be a bit further from people and provides more subject separation).

Your 20-40 gives you a unique opportunity to try both focal lengths before your buy another lens. If you go out and shoot a bunch of street shots, zooming as you see fit, you can see which focal lengths you use most. You might naturally tend to use the 20 end or the 40 end or discover that you gravitate toward the middle and should buy something like a 28. Another test is to set the zoom at some focal length and tape it down and then spend some time shooting to see which focal gets more keepers and has less frustrating lost opportunities.

Either approach will help you find a prime focal length that works for you (or discover you can't live without the zoom).

Good luck!

Oh and I think people are realizing that Canon and Nikon DSLRs are now dead systems.

I look forward to buying a D750 with a couple nice primes next year for a couple hundred bucks :)

Ok so on one hand you guys complain that it's hard to be a seller because no one's buying (a lot of people are leaving cameras behind to use just their cell phones).

On the other hand, you complain when new people join the photography world because they have questions (they're newbies, they'll ask newbie questions). Just be nice and polite and point them to some instructional videos. Help them pick up the photography bug.

Sorry if I can't find myself having a whole lot of sympathy for this conundrum...

I had my second close encounter of the Pentax-kind (first was in 2010 on a vaporetto in Venice, I had a K20d, stranger K10d). A few days ago my wife (K-3iii) and I (K-1) strolled through Kensington, London, when some guy pointed at my camera and then at his K-1ii (he also had GRII). High five! I tried to start a conversation (Are you satisfied with Pentax? Starting over would you invest into Pentax again?), but, alas, he spoke hardly any English, as he was from Ukraine! What a strange coincidence... After a few minutes we shook hands (!), I expressed my hope that his country would fxxk the Russians and then we parted.

I’ve been to that Tulip farm. It’s a fun place to grab some photo’s. I actually live nearby. I moved to the Huntsville area in 2020.

Yesterday I was on a hike to see an eagle nest and hopefully an eagle or two. I spoke with one gentleman who explained his wife had been into photography but now they both were in to painting, He said he had purchased a Pentax for her many years ago but she did not transition to digital. Further conversation revealed he thought her camera had been K1000. Very few cameras in the group, a couple Nikon and a couple Canon. Mine was the only Pentax in attendance. The majority had binoculars and cell phones. The guide had three spotting scopes with tripods.

We did get to see a pair of eagles. One stayed on the nest while the other circled and was present for a short time. I've attached one photo which was heavily cropped. Taken with a K-70, 55-300 f4-5.8 lens, @300mm, f18, 1/500 sec, ISO 800. PP in PSE 2019.

I do remember sitting at the kitchen table one Saturday morning and deciding to go shoot the Grand Canyon. I tossed all my gear in the pickup and started up I17 getting to the canyon about 5 pm. Shot the sunset - but my brand new K5 pulled up lame (the mirror motor went out - warranty), so I just continued shooting with my old K100D. I processed everything and put the images on a thumb drive, plugged it into the large screen TV to flip through them. The K100D images held their own against the K5. I learned right there that old cameras are not necessarily inferior to the new ones.

I shot with the K5 for years and even picked up a really inexpensive K5IIs on closeout. My son now has the K5 down in Florida. The K5 to me is the watershed body, where everything just went right. I upgraded to a K1 when I retired, with the reasoning that I wanted more star color in my Milky Way images. Why drive up to 3 hours one way, and shoot for 3 to 6 hours (12 hours total round trip) and not get really what you want in the images.

The K1 came in the mail. I unpacked it, picked it up, and instantly realized that the K5 was an absolute joy to shoot with. Lightweight and with a very easy straightforward user sense to it. Not that the K1 is bad, it's heavy (and I quickly became accustomed to it), a beast of a camera (took me a bit to get all the controls down, get it set up - and figuring out the differences between the K5 user interface). Actually, there are times I forget and revert to the K5, and whatever is not there.

It's funny, with the K5 I struggled to get the star color I wanted, but the landscape element was drop-dead nailed. With the K1, the sky is nailed with the colors I want and expect - but the landscape element, I now struggle with - getting detail, shadowing low noise clean images. My expectations are waaaay higher, and I'm shooting much in darker environments. A little light works wonders.

My K100D would never give me the same images I'm now capturing with the K1 - but it and the K5(IIs) still has a place on the shelf and I get out with them from time to time. In terms of build quality - Pentax has always had it, and never really lost it - well in my opinion. My right arm is slightly longer than my left, from carrying the K1.....

Out and about yesterday to photograph one of the new Poseidon aircraft belonging to the Royal Air Force, there were three other people there one with a Canon one with a Nikon, me with my K3iii and another with a Pentax ME Super.

Talking to him he told me he had only ever owned one other camera, a K1000 which he sold years ago. The ME Super was the replacement, bought new and used continuously since then and the only problem he’d encountered was the light seal on the door leaking which he replaced around a month ago which is excellent going for a camera he bought around 40 years ago.

He told me he had no desire to go digital but he was becoming concerned at the cost of film and development plus the inconsistency he found between developers.

It was great talking to him and great to find another Pentaxian.

I was in Yellowstone last weekend with a friend when a man came up to us. He spotted our Pentax gear and he struck up a conversation.

He had a K1 with a DFA 150-450, I had my K3 III with a DFA 150-450 and my friend had her KP with a DA 55-300. He was a very positive Pentax user.
I asked him if he was on the Forum and he said "not any more". Apparently some negative comments had caused him to drop off the board. I didn't pursue the issue.
It was good to find another Pentaxian enjoying the Park.

A cliched location - where one expects flowing water.

But what if there is none. Normally this section of the river dies up over the summer months. If you compose carefully you can get a refection of the tree. I couldn't, or daren't dangle a 645z almost on the water given the cost and size of it and the 28-45.

I've mixed feelings about this. Part of my loves it as reflections are just so me, and part of me think it's wrong as we are so conditioned into seeing waterfalls here.

_IMG1765 by Stephen Taylor, on Flickr

Typically I avoided taking workshop clients here when there was no flowing water as it didn't seem right, and now I wonder if I've done them a terrible disservice by not getting them to challenge the norm.

Neither have ideal light...but I think I want to do more of this when next summer comes around.
