The Rumors Were True - K-5 II, K-5IIs, Q10, 560mm, 18-270mm, and more!

I haven't been on this forum for quite a while, but I commented on this thread when it originated and thus have been copied on the recent posts. The reason I'm no longer a forum participant is relevant to this thread. I'm a committed bird and wildlife photographer. It isn't how I earn a living but I spend a lot of time and money to capture the best possible images I can. At the same time, I was a committed Pentaxian, starting with film bodies and going through the K-5, with a full complement of the best lenses. My Pentaxian leanings and my enthusiasm for bird photography led me to the Sigma 500 along with the two Sigma TCs, which I used extensively, and the Pentax F* 250-600 f5.6, which I loved to look at but kept only a short while because it was too heavy to be practical and not as sharp as the Sigma. Now I shoot Nikon, with my primary birding gear being a D7100 and a Nikkor 500mm f/4 G.

How is that relevant to this thread? Because the entry price for my Nikon setup, if the lens is purchased used, is in the same ballpark as a Pentax K-3 and Pentax 560 or Sigma 500 (purchased new). And (here's the point), the Nikon setup is in a different league altogether than anything available on Pentax. The Nikon super-teles are tack sharp across the frame wide open. The ability to shoot at f4 (vs. f5.6) means that shutter speeds can be higher with lower ISOs, which results in visibly less noise with resulting better feather detail. And it means a 1.4TC can be used without too big a penalty. The Nikon lens/body combo produces excellent autofocus tracking of birds in flight -- the superiority on this dimension of the Nikon setup compared to the Pentax gear is so striking that I was blown away the first day. I'm sure the same points could be made for the equivalent Canon gear compared to Pentax.

The day that Ricoh/Pentax produces professional-level super-telephotos and brings its autofocus system up to level of Nikon and Canon, I'll be back. But until then, it doesn't make sense to me for an enthusiast bird photographer to be using Pentax gear for that particular purpose. It took me a while to get to this point because of my psychological commitment to Pentax, but here I am and happy with it. I pass my experience along for whatever it is worth.

Pentax sells a scope adapter (the PF-CA35) that includes optical elements. It allows a direct connection between a Pentax DSLR and the scope and works very well with focus peaking. My Pentax PF-80ED scope and eyepiece (used) and the adapter (new) cost about $1000. If you're willing to work off a tripod and your targets are stationary birds you can get some amazing shots.

Camera Carrying Systems - suggestions?

Depends on the length of the lens. With a supertelephoto you're going to have part of the equipment riding on your hip. In that case I use the lens handle and/or an attached monopod resting behind my armpit to prevent banging against my hip. With something like a DA*300 or shorter you'll be able to adjust the strap so that the gear is riding against your chest/stomach, which is relatively comfortable and not subject to much dangle/banging, if that is a word.

Really confused on Third Party Flash for Pentax K30

I own a couple of Yongnuo flash units for Nikon (YN468 & YN 568II). To the best of my knowledge Yongnuo doesn't make a unit designed for Pentax. I'm pretty sure the Yongnuo you're interested in will fire in manual mode if mounted on the K-30 hotshoe, just as will almost any flash unit of any brand for any camera, but you're not going to get TTL metering or control from the camera, and I don't know whether a Pentax flash cord with work. (My YN468 doesn't even have a port for a cord.) Another issue is that your photo shows what might be a radio transmitter in the camera hotshoe. I'm not sure how that works in the overall setup but in general a multiple flash system works better when the flashes are fired by a radio signal that if fired through an optical sensor, and the radio transmitters are brand specific. So the bottom line as I understand it is that the Yongnuo unit you're considering will work in manual mode on the Pentax hotshoe but may not work off camera and will not work with through the lens metering at all. You might be better off with a used Pentax or a Metz.

Tripod vs monopod

Monopod for bird photography if you typically walk and shoot opportunistically -- tripod with gimbal head if you typically set up in a fixed location and wait for the birds to come to you. If your gear is heavy enough to make hand holding a challenge, then adding a tilt head to the monopod makes a big difference in the ability to shoot at acute angles while maintaining good support. I use a Gitzo 3 series monopod with a Sirui L-10 tilt head and am very happy with that combo. Pay careful attention to the leg locks -- I had an otherwise fine Chinese-brand carbon fiber monopod that would collapse on me if I hadn't twisted all the leg locks really hard. For that reason I think latch locks are better on cheaper equipment. The Gitzo twist locks take only a quarter of a turn to tighten enough to hold and they tighten up themselves as more weight is applied.

How about cheap Triopo tripod legs?

I don't know the Triopo, but I own four sets of legs, including one Chinese and one Korean carbon set that were relatively inexpensive, a Manfrotto heavy duty aluminum set, and a top of the line Gitzo 3 series. My advice would be a) buy carbon rather than metal -- the difference in vibration transmission is substantial, b) if you're tall make sure the legs are long enough so that you don't have to bend over, c) get something with a load rating that is 3 times the weight of the gear you anticipate using, d) understand that there is likely to be a point when you will wish that you had bought the best to begin with (if I had followed my own advice I would own 1 set of legs instead of 4).

I own the f4.5-5.6 version. I've enjoyed it. It is sharp at its widest (10mm) and wide open, where I tend to use it. If I'm going on a trip that provides opportunities for architectural and landscape shots, it is my go-to lens. I haven't used the f3.5, but I think as a value proposition the 4.5- 5.6 is hard to beat, particularly if you buy it used.

Sigma 1.4x EX APO DG Teleconverter -- Corner Performance
Posted By oeriies

I used my copy on the Sigma 500mm f4.5. This is a birding lens where nearly everything gets cropped anyhow so I wasn't that concerned with corner sharpness. I confirmed with more-or-less rigorous tests using a test pattern that the Sigma 500mm plus the 1.4x TC produces an image with slightly higher center resolution than the Sigma 500mm w/o the TC (but with the image cropped to the same FOV as produced with the TC). Any TC that fails that test shouldn't be used at all, right, because you could do just as well by simply cropping. But even though the TC produced slightly sharper images than equivalent cropped images from the naked lens, I hardly ever used it because I would lose a stop to the TC itself and needed to stop down a stop to gain maximal sharpness. So there I was at f/8 when I nearly always needed to be a f/4.5

I don't have any experience with the two lenses you're using, but the general sense of the users of nearly all TCs across the camera brands is that they're sharper stopped down one stop, which means you're generally losing at least two stops to get a really sharp image. My decision after being seduced time and again by the prospect of increasing reach through a good TC is that it is generally better to shoot w/o the TC at lower ISO and crop.

I'll add that using TCs that pass through the electrical info on Pentax bodies creates another issue in that the camera doesn't know it is working with the longer focal length. Thus the shake reduction system is working with a parameter that is badly off. That leaves the best use of the Sigma TCs on Pentax to a tripod or fast shutter speed with shake reduction turned off, IMHO.

Image Stabilization in Pentax Cameras

Speaking from experience rather than any technical knowledge of the mechanics of image stabilization I've found that the Pentax system does everything I want it to with normal and wide lenses and has the significant advantage of always being there (many of the best Nikon normal and wide lenses aren't stabilized). But with super-teles, i.e., 400mm and above, the Nikon VR in-lens system is much better. I assume this is true for Canon IS as well but I have no personal experience with that system.

Item for Sale
Wimberley gimbal head and Manfrotto tripod

Asking Price
$415 USD

Item Location
Long Island, NY (United States)

Item Description
Wimberley WH-100 gimbal head, Wimberley C-30 quick release clamp, Manfrotto 3021N tripod -- all for $415 plus shipping.

The Wimberley head is in excellent condition. Wimberley makes the world's best gimbal heads. I own two other gimbals -- a Jobu and a Chinese knock-off of the Wimberley. I thought they were everything I needed until I bought the Wimberley. But there really is no comparison in terms of stability and smoothness.

The Wimberley C-30 quick release clamp is only a few months old. I bought it new from B&H for $100. The C-30 transforms the WH-100 into the model that superceded it, the WH-101.

The Manfrotto 3021N is a very good aluminum tripod, essentially the same as the current model 55 classic. It is in excellent condition. Everything works as it should. It provides a very solid, easily adjustable base for the Wimberley. I've regulary used it with a heavy 500mm lens.

The Wimberley WH-100 series sells for $300+ on eBay when it becomes available, which is once in a blue moon. The clamp is $100. The used 3021n tripods on Amazon are listed between $125 and $190 whereas a new model 55 costs $212. So you'll be lucky to be able to put this combo together for less than $525.

I'm willing in principle to sell the items separately, but packing and shipping is a hassle so I'll give the combo a few days before I'll consider offers for the pieces.

I'm selling because I've upgraded to the Wimberley WH-200 and Gitzo Systematic legs, which I'm not at all sure are giving me any photographic advantage over what I'm selling other than weighing a bit less. But I bought the new stuff so the previous kit must go.

Note that I can only ship on Fridays and Saturdays.

DA*300 with Tamron 14 Teleconverter

I'll agree with the others: The DA*300/Tamron TC combo isn't effective -- autofocus is slow and hit or miss. I've owned a bunch of teleconverters in the search for extra reach, but I now own none. The Tamron 1.4 and Sigma 1.4 were the sharpest, but in my experience the conditions had to be nearly perfect (plenty of light, camera on tripod, stationary subject, and mirror locked up) to get results from them that were visibly better than cropping to the same field of view and postprocessing for sharpness. In everyday use under imperfect conditions, my results from cropping were nearly always better than my results from using a TC. This is with 500mm lenses. Things might be different with shorter lengths.

Thinking the unthinkable - switch to Nikon?
Posted By oeriies
Replies: 50

I switched to Nikon for wildlife and birds (Nikon D7100 and Nikon 500mm f/4 vr). I'm sticking with Pentax for medium and wide. The D7100 is superior to the K-5 for continuous/predictive autofocus, and the extra pixels allow for more aggressive cropping. So, more keepers on birds in flight. I expect Pentax will achieve parity on these features whenever it releases the successor to the K-5, but that leaves Pentax still way behind on long glass. Nikon has the 80-400mm 4.5/5.6, the 300mm 2.8, the 400mm 2.8, the 200-400mm f/4, the 500mm f/4, the 600mm f/4, and the 800 mm f/5.6. Each is optically superb and the in-lens stablization is superior at these longer lengths to the Pentax in body IS. Nikon also offers excellent TCs that mate well to all of these lenses except the 80-400. Against this Pentax offers a 300mm f/4, the 560 5.6 (not a great lens) and no TCs. Pentax isn't really in the game for long exotic glass. That's a shame because I would much rather hold and operate a Pentax camera than a Nikon. But switching to Nikon makes perfect sense to me given the type of photography you do.

This is an all metal manual focusing lens that reminds me of the limiteds in terms of build quality. I purchased it a while back as part of a package deal that included another lens I was out to get. This one turned out to be the pick of the litter. It is in pristine condition to the point that I wonder if it has ever been used. If you're a collector you won't find one in better condition. Comes with front and back caps and an after-market 58mm metal lens hood.

Pentax 1.7x adapter & Tamron 1.4x Pz-Af TC

Asking Price
various USD

Item Location
Long Island, NY (United States)

Item Description
I'm using a 500mm telephoto so don't need these TCs anymore. PM me.

1) SMC Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter - $450

I purchased this as new old stock from a camera store in Oregon a few years ago. I have used it maybe half a dozen times. It is in perfect condition, both cosmetically and optically. It comes with front and back caps and a third party bag. I do not have the box, orginal bag, or manual.

2) Tamron-F 1.4X Pz-AF MC4 Teleconverter - $275

I purchased this in "like new" condition. It still is. This is the TC that works with all autofocus K-mount lenses, including DA lenses that have only an SDM drive. I've owned virtually every TC available for Pentax. This is the sharpest and most adaptable. Comes with front and rear caps and a third party bag.

Nikon D7100
Posted By oeriies
Replies: 112
I've been shooting Pentax for quite a while, and still do, but I was able to pick up a Nikon 500mm f/4G for a good price and bought a Nikon D7100 to go with it. I've been using it for a few weeks. I continue to use the K-5 with shorter glass. Here is a quick comparison:

Handling, build, and ergonomics: The K-5 is the clear winner. The all magnesium body and smaller denser feel is superior to the Nikon (which is bigger, lighter, and plastic on the front side); the buttons are better placed on the K-5; the grip is easier to grip; and the menu is easier to navigate.

Low light capability: K-5 is the winner. The D7100 isn't a slouch but I can recover more detail from shadows with less noise with the K-5 than with the D7100.

Lens versatility: K-5 is the winner because of in-body shake reduction. Vibration reduction (VR) isn't available on a lot of Nikon glass, so while they offer an extensive lens system it isn't really that extensive if you focus on high quality glass with VR. The availability of SR for all Pentax lenses is a big plus. Nikon excels with zooms with VR, but these are very expensive, e.g., $2,700 for the new 80-400mm VR.

fps and burst rate: K-5 wins again. The D7100 has a significant problem with its buffer size. Shooting RAW you get about 5 shots in the first second, and then the camera stops for a while and resumes at 1 shot per second. The K-5 can fire off 25-30 shots at high speed before it slows down to two shots per second.

Continuous autofocus: D7100 wins by miles. The autofocus system is very, very good. It grabs onto birds in flight tenaciously and doesn't let go. The continuous autofocus system on the K-5 is worse than useless, in my experience.

Resolution: The extra pixels in the D7100 sensor allow for much more aggressive cropping.

Long glass: Nikon wins big. The Nikon 400 f/2.8, 500mm f/4, and 600mm f/4 are superb. There's nothing like them available from Pentax. Sigma makes a good 500mm for K-mount but it isn't as sharp as the Nikon 500mm and it isn't stabilized and it isn't weather sealed.

This and that: The Pentax TAv mode is better than the manual auto ISO implementation on the Nikon. With TAv you still can switch to manual mode and set things manually. On Nikon you can make manual mode work like TAv by setting it through the menu system to use auto-iso, but then you don't have a manual mode anymore. When using the D7100 I miss the green button. Video functions are better on the Nikon and it doesn't overheat in video mode as the K-5 does. Everything you turn clockwise on the K-5, e.g., to mount a lens, turns counter clockwise on the Nikon. Maybe it is just that I'm used to the Pentax way, but I think it is more natural to turn to the right than to the left. Nothing like the PentaxForums in Nikon world where there are a bunch of user sites, none of which have the wealth of info and involved members that are found here.

Bottomline: They are both great cameras. If you want access to the best long glass, great continuous autofocus, and the highest resolution in a cropped sensor at a very reasonable price then Nikon is the obvious choice. If you mainly shoot in the wide to short telephoto range, prefer primes to zooms, and want a camera with great ergonomics and no obvious corner-cutting, then the K-5 and its sucessor is the way to go, in my opinion.

Item for Sale
Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG APO for Pentax

Asking Price
$4200 USD

Item Location
Long Island NY (United States)

Item Description
I am selling my beloved Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX DG APO for Pentax. I purchased the lens new in October of 2011 directly from Sigma USA. It is in excellent condition. It is mechanically and optically perfect, and suffers only from a few small paint nicks -- a couple on the rotating collar, more on the bottom of the foot from attaching the lens plate, and paint wear on the edge of the top of the foot from rubbing against me when I carry the lens on a Black Rapid strap. These small paint "scars" should be visible in the accompanying photos. Otherwise the lens looks new. This is because everything on the exterior except the foot collar and foot have always been covered by a custom made lens coat that you can see in one of the photos.

The lens has the USA 5 year warranty and I will provide my original purchase receipt. Sigma warranties are not formally transferable but in my experience with the USA headquarters in seeking service on other Sigma lenses I've owned they've never asked for warranty documentation. In any case, this is a very reliable screw-drive lens that isn't going to need service unless you drop it.

For the price of $4200, the buyer will receive everything that came with the new lens, including the shipping box. I'll also include the lens plate and the custom lens coat.

I'm also offering a package deal for $4550 that includes the two Sigma TCs that are designed for the lens, the Sigma 1.4x DG EX APO Teleconverter and the Sigma 2.0x DG EX APO Teleconverter. I purchased both TCs new, they've been used only a few times, and are in new condition. They come with the boxes, lens cases, caps, and documentation that comes with a new purchase. The Sigma will autofocus with both TCs.

I've got several hundreds of shots online that have been taken with the lens. The following link Birds Of Phoenix Photos by oeriies | Photobucket is the yield from two part days in Phoenix from a couple of months ago. I was shooting handheld and off a monopod with a K-5 classic. The reason I've selected this folder is that I was shooting a bunch of birds that were new to me, I didn't have a lot of time, and I wanted friends and family to see my shots. Thus I think this is a good indication of what the lens produces in everyday use. If you want examples of the very best the lens can do shooting off a tripod let me know. There are many examples here on the forum and everybody who has reviewed the lens gives it incredibly high scores.

Why am I selling? I ran across an incredible local deal on a Nikon 500mm f4/g VR, which pushed me over the edge to purchase a Nikon d7100 body that I'll devote exclusively to the Nikon long glass. I'm sticking with Pentax for everything in the wide to short telephoto range. I'm not sure if this was the right decision -- the Nikon 500mm is a little sharper and faster than the Sigma but the Sigma is almost two lbs lighter. In any case, I bought the Nikon and need to sell the Sigma.

I recently purchased a Nikon D7100. I still own and use a K-5. I prefer the K-5 for most things, but the autofocus systems are night and day. The Nikon acquires and holds autofocus tenaciously in continuous mode with 51 autofocus points whereas the Pentax is at best hit or miss under the same circumstances. In the most recent interview with Pentax Japan executives, posted on this forum, they said one of their priorities was to be a "world leader" in autofocus. That is a great goal and one they're far from now.

I've recently purchased a Nikon d7100 to mate with a Nikon 500mm vr I picked up locally that was a bargain. I'm not abandoning Pentax -- I'll continue to use my K-5 for short telephoto, normal, and wide shooting where the in-body shake reduction, primes, and ergonomics beat Nikon offerings hands-down. But the Nikon d7100 inherits the D4's autofocus system and I've got to tell you it is like the difference between a 21st century Lexus and a 19th century horse and buggy. I took my D7100 down to the harbor and shot a flock of sea gulls for an hour. They were coming and going at all angles to me. The D7100 nailed and held focus in 95% of a couple of hundred shots. It only had problems when I tried to acquire focus against a background of trees. I wouldn't even try Pentax AF-C in these conditions -- it is a joke. I would have used center-point focus, recomposed and focused repeatedly, and been lucky to come home with a few keepers. I'm sure that Pentax intends to address this. They really need to. Until that are at least at parity with Canikon on autofocus they can't compete for action and wildlife photographers.

Pentax-F 1.7x AF Adapter focus adjustment on K-5

I've been playing around with the 1.7x AF Adapter on a DA* 300mm mounted on a K-5 in the hope that it would be a workable long telephoto for an upcoming trip for which taking my Sigma 500mm isn't practical. The image quality is acceptable. My problem is that the adapter/lens combo back focuses when using it through the view finder. Interestingly, it is is spot on with live view. I want to get it to focus correctly when using the viewfinder. The AF fine adjustment through the K-5 menu doesn't pick up a lens ID so the only option is to dial in an adjustment value that will apply to all lenses. That will screw up autofocus on every other lens unless I can remember to reset the fine adjustment setting every time I mount and dismount the 1.7x adapter. Is there another solution I've overlooked? An adjustment to the adapter itself? A way to fool the K-5 into giving the adapter a unique ID?

Removing K5 D-rings?

Do you mean the triangular stainless steel rings that come with the K-5 for attachment of the neck strap? These come off and on easily. If you use your fingernail to spread the tip apart instead of a metal tool you won't scratch anything.

Or do you mean the connector on the BlackRapid? You would have to cut that off with a hacksaw, or unstitch the BlackRapid strap, remove the connector, and then restitch.

Or do you mean something else?
