Tips for Antelope Caverns & Grand Canyon

If a photographic tour is an option at Antelope Canyon, do it! The experience in the canyon on the photographic tours if vastly different from the regular tours.

The slot canyons are very narrow, the best time of day to do a tour if you want to see the shaft of lights is in the middle of the day.

It's very dusty in the slot canyons because the guides are throwing sand in the air to show the shafts of light, don't even think about changing lens if you want your sensor to ever be clean again. Bring a blower or something to clean your lens while you are on the tour.

If you have more than one body go as wide as you can on one and short telephoto on the other. If you only had one body, I would go wide.

Bring a tripod, there's not much light and to get the classic trickling sand and shaft of lights shots a tripod is best. From memory, a tripod was required on the photo tour when I did it in 2016.

Great Price On "Like New" Pentax K-1" Camera Body

I bought a second hand K1 body from Mapcamera's eBay store in 2022. The camera body I bought was rated B, it was pretty hard to distinguish it from new, it had less than 350 clicks. Even with tax and a customs clearance fee from DHL the price was significantly better than anything I could find locally.

My wife picked up a FA 43 limited lens for me from Map Camera in Shinjuku last year, it was rated average but the condition was still well above what I expected.

The prices on Map Camera's website ??????????????????????????????????? are much better than the same item in their eBay store, the website also has items not listed on eBay. Map Camera now offers international buyers the opportunity to buy from their website and use a Japanese reshipping company, Buyee. I tried it out with a FA 77 limited and was pleased with the service, the condition of the lens, and the total cost. Buyee's shipping was very reasonably but they clearly make a good cut of their profits from exchange rates, although nowhere near as much as Paypal.

Red-capped plover male in breeding plummage, the odd shaped lumps in the background are thrombolites. With K1 and F*300.

The F*300 had a nasty fall onto concrete the day before this shot, no damage to the glass and the AF still works fine but the hood and filter ring is bent enough to stop the hood extending. I sent photos to the Australian Pentax distributor/repairer to see if it could be repaired, their technician had never seen a F*300 lens before :(

That's the male, he has an iridescent pink/purple patch on the back of his head, it made the ID easy.

Your shot is very cute, it looks a bit magenta on my uncalibrated work screen.

It's a remarkable location. I've seen some incredible images taken there especially night shots incorporating the Milky Way (there was too much cloud to consider trying).

Here's another pano from slightly earlier in a different spot - this one was 10 shots
