The main advantage of a shorter 'macro' for me is with pets etc, where the normal lenses don't focus quite close enough, and the 90mm is a bit too long as the critters get close

Who says we need to be fair with Nikon :D
The D600 with its shutter scandal is a good low-ish cost way into full frame. I got mine cheap during the scandal, and then Nikon replaced the shutter for free. It is a very nice camera.
But Pentax has been consistent about their design goals all along - smaller, lighter weight cameras and lenses than the big pro camera systems. And it worked great during the Spotmatic era... but once the Pro Camera brainwashing took, people abandoned the merely enhusiast cameras... Olympus to their credit managed something rare with the OM series - here were small, light and nimble cameras that had the Pro cachet!
Due to the OM, a size compare of a Super Program or similar with the FE would be far closer than with these.

Just for fun. Perhaps the Nikons are more capable and long lasting, perhaps. But for a day's walk I'd rather carry a Pentax. That should have been an ad slogan: I'd rather carry a Pentax  k-x d600 by Jussi, on Flickr

Looks like I've been a member since 2006, which I can hardly believe. I used to be active and had a bunch of buddies, had a ton of fun, learned a lot and I hope educated some.
There really isn't anything bad that happened; I just drifted off... other things in life, plus stuff like facebook, and in general I've done less photography and gear acquisition in the last few years. I even stopped posting daily to Flickr!
Part of it is also that I'm stuck at my daughter's old K-x from a digital POV. I've bought Sony mirrorrless so I could adapt all sorts of vintage lenses, and a Nikon full frame. I dream of a Pentax FF but can't justify the cost.
I'm also behind on my dues

Just one main area of concern with the 645 - it's with the battery holder. The thing gets brittle over time, and once broken you soon find replacements are not easy to find, and usually expensive. There's a remote battery attachment that's more widely available (to keep in a warm pocket in winter), but the regular item may take some patience. One bit of advice is to use Energizer AA Lithiums as they are slightly thinner than other AA's.
Otherwise, excellent and reliable.

hear hear! I haven't been back here for a while, this looks like a great section. Nice to see you too Steve!

I'd sent a Super Tak 28 with it, looks like it got swapped out for the 135 at some point. Either way, it is a great camera with a very smooth feel, and frees you to your own intelligence for exposure. I'm happy we'll get another round with it. :)

Thanks for the advice, that's excellent! I'll make this my plan today - though I suspect which post office it is so may just go in person.
This isn't an expensive package; I've had really expensive packages left on the doorstep before with no problem... and no, I won't blame the carrier as long as they put the package where I can get it, if the package then gets stolen :p
The bit is actually a remote battery holder, as the battery clip on my camera shattered by itself and I have 2 backs full of film ready to go. Hence my eagerness to get my greedy little hands on the box.... :D

Need to vent:
I bought a little something-something for my Pentax 645, from Japan via ebay. On Tuesday. JP post had it in NYC by Wednesday nite and it was delivered to my door a week ago Thursday, at just before noon.
Only of course 'there was nobody to take the package' so I got a peach slip instead. I filled it for re-delivery, leave it at the doorstep like everything else... nothing... Lucky for me I checked the tracking via USPS on Sunday, and it was telling me I was running out of time to ask for redelivery!!
I asked for Monday. Had them text me. Monday came and went... Tuesday came and went... Wednesday came and is about to go... IF I knew which post office my packet is (or is it in my postman's truck?) I'd go find it. It will be a week sitting in a post office in my town after coming all the way from Japan overnight.

Thanks for the tips~ I did snag a remote battery holder with the clip intact from Japan, amazingly it already is knocking on my door (needed to sign a slip so tomorrow...) which will help me with plan B as well.
I read the 9v battery may not work so well, though it looks to be very easy to adapt, because the voltage drop is steeper than with 6 AA's. One way to find out...
The lithium idea is good. I thought of removing batteries after each use, but that would stress the holder more, no?
The parts only deals are rough, usually the clip and sometimes the grip is already gone. I think you can sell the clip or grip for about the same money as a parts camera, or at least that's what it looks like. The working bodies are available around $200 including at KEH. (SO: we can then have 2 inop cameras when the clips go! :D)

I've enjoyed my Pentax 645 for many years now, a decade maybe, but haven't used it enough lately. I loaded the two film inserts and got ready to shoot.. only the batteries seemed to die. No problem, put in new ones.... only the battery clip disintegrated!
Cue search for a replacement. Made of Unobtanium, it seems. Only alternatives are to 1) buy another body with a good battery clip 2) buy a grip with the battery clip and 3) buy the remote battery holder if it has the clip.
Without the batteries the camera is pretty much dead, so this is a big dependency. Too bad there's no stash of the clips somewhere ready to be sold...
I'll try some alternates: fashioning a clip from two 3-battery holders. it won't fit likely but at least it will produce power. Possibly tape it onto a remote battery pack and get the juice to the camera that way.
Also, is there a way to reinforce the original clip (gaffer's tape? glue of some sort?) so it won't shatter?
