Love the voice of experience, so SO TRUE !!….thanks for sharing it. ---------- Post added 07-07-18 at 11:24 AM ---------- Interesting read to the end and some (as always) interesting conversations along the way.
The original thread title "Is a great kit a mixed blessing" is open to a lot of interpretation (and will contribute to our 40K posts). I interpret it slightly differently, not necessarily dis-agreeing with any of the previous comments many of which apply a different interpretation and context.
I see a great kit (& we come up against our first interpretation right here !) as indeed a mixed blessing, I think I have pretty good kit ...great ??… not sure about that, it does not have many lenses that would truly wear the "great" tag....but I like it.
The mixed blessing to me is what to take ? this can be a really frustrating quandry. Put the DA* 300 on the K3 and go bird hunting only to have a great shot pop itself down close to you !! Time you scramble for a shorter lens its gone. Leave the shorter lens on and yep.....there's the shot....perched in the top of yonder tree. :(
Do you pack ém all ? and spend your day changing lenses and your night removing dust spots from your images !!?? sounds like I am making an argument for the "bridge" camera, which I am not.
Then it works for you....driving along and come across the scene you want and the right lens is on the camera.... Ya Hoo !! get the shot, print it, (yes I am fortuneate, I have a 44 inch wide printer and use it)… and you love photography all over again, particularly when you sell the odd one.
So, yes...I believe a great kit is a mixed blessing...in that context. I am facing that quandry again now as I prepare for the upcoming US trip and its limitations with travel luggage weights. I will take 2 bodies (K1 Mk2 K3 Mk2). No point in risking it all on one body.
K3 will be set up with DA* 300 & a 1.4 TC in my pocket ….giving me good reach, hopefully to capture some wildlife in Yellowstone, the K1 will have a general purpose kit, Tokina 20-35 f2.8. Tamron 28-300, FA 43 ltd.... and my wife carries her own k3 with DA 17-70. Some of this kit will go in checked baggage in a purpose built High Density foam lined Crumpler bag.
One other factor not mentioned in the contextual conversations of great kit making you a better photographer is camera or photo clubs. Can I suggest if you are not a member and an active contributor to one....do it. There is no more sobering reality check than to have your work hanging up amongst 50 or 80 others and some total stranger making comment on them, with no idea who or what has taken the image. And the results will stagger you and wipe away any thoughts of gear snobbery once and for all. You will see the image snapped from a $70 point & shoot walk away with the monthly prize because someone followed the Ansell Adams mantra of F8 & be there, through to a high end camera occasionally pop up...and they all hang together.
You WILL NOT always agree with that total stranger (aka the, judge), in fact many times you will question his parentage, eye sight, mental capacity and taste in life....but it is his or her opinion only on the night, it is a subjective thing, put the same images in front of another total stranger (also aka a judge) and you will get a totally different mix of results....but my god, over time you will learn so much and your photography will find a new level, and meet some great people along the way. I highly recommend it.

I've been to quite a few Finkes in my short life, and the girls seem to really get off flashing the riders/drivers. I'm not implying that I've been witness to this or condone this type of activity though... :p :p :p

Its unfortuneate your having issues, I can only give the CRK crew a very big tick, they have always done a good job with my stuff. One thing I would advise is that IF you possibly can, make the effort to go in and see them, often these things are best explained face to face. Relationships are built, understandings developed. I fully appreciate it may not be possible to do this.

Disclosure: I use Pentax and Nikon.
I think Pentax is simply a victim of its own low profile when it comes to marketing. The big two throw a lot of cash and incentives around to drive consumers to their product while Pentax has tended rest on its laurels a bit, letting its user base do the bulk of the heavy lifting for them (my opinion). Of course what happens in the market place is that when a salesman is getting a kick back / incentive he is going to push that product. Pentax's (Ricoh's) problem is that if they choose to compete head on what is the cost versus the return ?
for what it is worth as a user of both Pentax & Nikon I still adore the Pentax interface, it is just so intuitive and logical it really does leave the rest for dead....and I am fresh from hosting a weekend workshop where all brands were represented.

FF has better image quality than APS-C, just like APS-C is better than smaller formats. The fact that a FF-sized sensor would fit inside a K-mount body and support existing lenses is the key reason there's so much hype, and it's certainly not unjustified.

"Technicolor Cohorts". This is one of my self-portraits. My cat scattered dirt all over my floor from a houseplant...instead of cleaning, I did a photoshoot. :)

Well, the results are what counts, not the effort :-)
I'm sure the ratio of Pentax "Pro"/Canikon "Pro" is even less than the consumer ratio.

Hey all.
Well the K3 is here and whilst I could whack in one of the batteries from the K5(s) I have decided to let the new battery charge and enjoy a quiet beer while I read the manual.
The manual has shrunk somewhat but is still jam packed full of knowledge so may take two beers to get through it. :hmm:
The Sigma 70-200 f2.8 is attached to the K3 and the plan is to get trackside Friday (Sthn Hemisphere time) and put it through its paces.
I will post some shots and keep this thread alive for awhile with my thoughts on the K3 and in particular its AF ability.
Cheers

I have always (20 years) used uv or protection filter in all my lenses. Few years ago i did take of filters from most used lenses for less than year or so. All i did get was many permanent marks in front glasses, some of those marks will reduce IQ. I regret i did try without protection filters.
If i would be pro i would not care too much, i would by new lens to replace bad one...but i am not so i can not afford to spoil my lenses. I am still using lenses i did buy 20 years ago, they are in mint condition.
