'70s Pentax 3.5.85-210 zoom focus ring doesn't work

My well worn 85-210mm f/3.5 has also had a focus issue. I've found the focus ring can become disconnected from the upper barrel. When that happens, the focus ring turns but focus distance doesn't change.

To "reattach" the upper barrel to the focus ring, I turned the focus / zoom ring to minimum focus distance, set the ring to 210mm (to get a better grip on the upper barrel) and then rotated the upper barrel to the left until it came to a hard stop.
That seemed to reconnect the lens and it focused properly again.

I haven't disassembled my lens, so I don't know what's going on inside. But as long as I'm careful when attaching and unscrewing a lens hood, the upper barrel seems to stay put.

Catch-in-Focus (CIF) Lens List

My FA* 300mm f4.5 will catch-in-focus on my K-5iis. As with the other FA* lenses, manual focus is engaged by pulling the focus ring toward the camera.

Focus points are selectable (even when the aperture ring isn't set on the "A" position - as I just discovered while messing around).

Indeed, marcus, I've never seen a "Tokina" version of this macro. In the U.S. the Soligor is scarce with the Sears being more common.

If I were to add a review listing for this lens, how would you suggest I categorize it?

Vivitar (komine) (f3 - early version); 1:1 macro 55mm F2.8 Lens Reviews - Vivitar Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database
Panagor Macro PMC 55mm F2.8 Lens Reviews - Soligor Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

Speaking as someone who has spent far too much time obsessing over third party lenses, I believe there are errors in the descriptions of the two linked lens reviews.

From the Vivitar 55mm macro review: "Note: this komine made lenses was also marketed by Elicar, Panagor, Soligor, Quantaray, Rokunar, Sears..."
As far as I know, the Soligor and Sears 55mm macros are not Komine lenses but were made by Tokina.

Re the Panagor 55mm macro: First, it doesn't seem to belong in the Soligor lenses department. And second, the Panagor description repeats the Komine made claim regarding Soligor and Sears 55mm macros: "This Komine made lens is also sold as a Vivitar, Elicar, Soligor, Quantaray, Rokunar, Sears..."

Vivitar serial numbers - Camera-wiki.org - The free camera encyclopedia

Photos of my own lenses show differences between the (Komine) Vivitar and the (Tokina) Sears and Soligor. The most obvious is the Sears and Soligor need a supplementary "adapter ring" to achieve 1:1 reproduction, while the Vivitar can do that natively.

The Soligor's "1...." serial number suggests it was likely made by Tokina. And the Sears 55 macro is apparently the same lens as the Soligor, thus probably supplied to Sears by Tokina.

cuepics, your lens was likely made by Tokina in 1971.

mflenses.com would be a potential source of information, but last time I checked, they were down for maintenance.

My late 1960s, Tokina made Auto Sears 35mm f/2.8 has silver trim and a minimum focus distance of 60cm.
I haven't used it much, but for landscapes I can say it has good, even sharpness across the (36x24) frame by f/4.
And it's very good across the frame by f/5.6.

Update: The good news is the lens has arrived intact and looks unused.
The not so good news is the lens doesn't work as well as I'd hoped.

I quickly discovered a reason why the lens may be essentially unused: The "A" mount pin on this lens is stiffly sprung and it extends higher than the pin on my other Samyang made lenses.
When the "A" setting on the aperture ring was engaged, it was difficult to get the lens mounted. Apparently the A pin was getting stuck in the contact cutouts on the mount of my K-5iis. With the aperture ring not in the "A" position, it mounted and dismounted smoothly.

That's never happened to me before with any of my other "A" or autofocus lenses. Perhaps Samyang recommends to mount and dismount the lens with the aperture ring set away from "A"? As far as I could see, the instruction manual says nothing about that.
With the lens mounted and set to "A", it did communicate as expected with my K-5iis.

I was also disappointed with the 35's sharpness. It isn't poor, just not as good as I'd expected. Particularly at landscape distance.

This lens is going back to Amazon and I'd suggest other interested members here watch out for serial #EIP18593 (Samyang 1:1.4 35mm AS UMC).

The serial # is located on the mount:

:D I need to get different reading glasses. The first time I read your post, I thought I saw "conical".
Either way, you're right. The hood really adds to the size of the lens.

But the hood from my Vivitar 85 is a bit smaller than my Canon mount Samyang 85's hood.
The Samyang is marked "UMC" and is a later version than my Vivitar.

Samyang made lenses are known for lax quality control, so there's a lot of sample variation. My "Vivitar" 85's focus throw isn't perfectly smooth all the way through, but it has much lighter turning effort than my later "Samyang" version.
The difference is so significant, I wonder if the two versions could have different focus mechanisms?

And if anyone is wondering, I haven't done a direct comparison of image quality between my two versions, but my impression is they're about the same. Both are more than good enough for me.

Welcome!

I haven't used my MX and Vivitar branded 85 f/1.4 to shoot photos, but with my left hand under the lens they feel nicely balanced.
Large lenses don't bother me, but in my opinion the 85 is neither too large nor unwieldy on the MX.

Some photos of my pair:

It appears to me you're correct. And I think you've made a good choice. A close focusing, "A" contact prime sounds like a recipe for success.

Despite what the Bestiary has to say about Cosina lenses, I'd be surprised if your lens doesn't prove to be rewarding.
Especially since you found it for a good price!

62mm wide angle Lens hood for Auto-Takumar 35/2.3?

@DavesDogma

Have you tried a press on / clamp hood instead of a screw in? I believe a clamp hood would be less likely to vignette for film or 36x24 digital.
