Hi,

Unless i'm mistaken you have got yourself a Singing Honeyeater which generally like to duck out of sight when cameras appear.

Well done. They're very quick to go to cover.
And he thought he was safe from the neighbours.

Cheers

Hi Bob,

Thank s for the post. These are my favourite lenses. I have four that I want to renovate each. Your work is timely.
This early model is quite variable. Serial numbers I have run form 167927 to 275467. I am guessing yours begins 19xxxx?
(The grooves in the focus ring vary between batches made over time.)
I'd be interested if you could confirm the serial number you have and my guess stands up.
.
Examples of this charming model are fading quickly with time.
Nice to hear you value it so well.
Cheers
Thanks again

Thanks for the information on these early copies of the first Super-Takumar 1.4/50mm.
There is a detailed description (in Japanese) of all the variants recorded for this model at http://http://home.a00.itscom.net/shisan12/index.html if you have the patience.
The tables are self explanatory and you can get Google to translate. It turns out the first three batches contain three different variants A, B and C and so on...

Heavy stuff, I know. But it gets you in.

Thanks again.

Regarding the position of SN 978000.
It comes from the middle of batch 3 of around 1K copies. My information shows batch 3 runs from around 977483 to approximately 978127 (covering 644 copies ) in a gap of 1114 between adjacent batches of other lenses.

Hi RR84,

Something else about the earlier batches I didn't mention.

According to records the earliest copies have half-stops between all main positions on the aperture ring; and later copies lose both the first and last half-stops viz. between f16-f11 and f2-f1.4. (Later, meaning from about the second or third batch.)
I have one from the third batch like yours that is intermediate between those two states in having lost only one; the F16-f11 half -stop, but it retains the half-stop between f2-f1.4.
Would you kindly check your 978000 to see if any half stops are missing and let me know the result?
Please?
Thank you,
Drop

Hi,

The initial Japanese Spotmatic operating manual contains illustrations of two (early and later) cosmetic forms of the 8 element 1.4/50mm Super-Takumar (358) which were available at the launch of this camera in 1964. The first type followed the cosmetic styles of earlier lenses. The early form has an orange "lollipop" as the centre of the depth of field (DOF) gauge and a short orange bar ending next to the orange letter "R" between this central marker and the f4 position marker ; the first white bar, on the LHS of the lollipop. Around 120,000 copies of this lens were made over it's production period in 55 batches and all except those from the initial 3 batches are principally the same, cosmetically. This main form has no orange letter R (through abbreviation after the fourth batch) and the orange "lollipop" is replaced with an orange trapezoid in the centre of the DOF scale (even in some copies in the first batches). The trapezoid is colloquially known as a "diamond" shape. The serial numbers on lenses in the first three batches run approximately 765xxx-766xxx, 967xxx-968xxx, 977xxx-978xxx.

Other differences mark this transition. In the first 3 batches a few lenses were given an early diamond or are missing the letter R and even fewer retained the continuous fine knurling of earlier aperture rings, but most lenses in these initial batches have coarse knurls ( finger grips with grooves ) on their aperture rings with11 grooves in each finger grip, which is also an earlier cosmetic style. Another transition to change print lettering and arrangement of names on the front bezel took place after serial number 13396xx, approximately, but all later lenses have 9 grooves in their aperture ring finger grips.

At the other end of the production period transitional change occurs between serial numbers 1418729 and 15914478 when the final 8 batches produced are adjacent to batches of the successive model (378, or 37800) of the 1.4/50mm (with 7 glass elements) that began production around serial number 1419660. Apparent aberrations in copies of each model there are few and result from combining parts from the two models rather that generic cosmetic change alone.

Some may also find interest in the the changing finger grip formulae characteristic of this Takumar model (358) which eventually settled to become F10/12 and A9/11 as discussed at the "Takumar Field Guide" . viz. Focus ring grips (12 ) with 10 grooves in each and Aperture ring grips (11) with 9 grooves. https://www.weebly.com/editor/main.php

Cheers

Proper case and caps for 8 Element Supertak 50mm 1.4?

Hi,

Your green- lined case is the correct one for the 1.4 / 50mm S-T 8 element sold from 1964 with the first Spotmatic cameras.
If the top is labelled 1.4/50, it is the correct one, as the first version has the smaller print with widest line spacing.

Later lenses wore the red-lined cases which appeared in the later 1960's (around 1969 but sometimes earlier) for the s-m-c and SMC lens in the 1970's.
(this included all Super-multi-coated 50mm lenses and some late S-T 50mm's).
This is the case with the makers imprint underneath.

There are several different later versions of the green lined cases that vary in minor ways according to the position of the "Japan" imprint and also the size and shape and spacing of the of the name imprinted on the top. These appeared soon after 1964 in the mid 1960's.

The relationship with Honeywell ended in 1969, or close to.
The front caps you describe are correct for the brand, either name will do.
The "correct" cap for age is one with the smaller (square and equally-spaced letters) "mechanical drawing " print with the name Honeywell or Asahi Pentax.
The rear caps you describe were common to all S-T's in the 1960's until an extra groove was added next to the thread to accomodate the extra pin used in later auto features on lenses in the 1970's.
The rear caps with extra groove were for lenses in 1969 onwards.

Have fun,

Its good to get it right.

Cheers

Hello,

I'm a new blogger on Pentaxforums.
This is my first post.
I have observed this site for some time as a silent member.
I now want to to participate more and make known my interests in Pentaxforums and to it's subscribers.

I began using M42 screw mount Takumars in the 1970"s and grew to appreciate them more with time.
Much later as I collected more I began research on them.

On my own website (you will find by searching Takumar Field Guide ) I have posted my research to date.
The information is available to all who are interested.

I receive feed back on this research including from other members of this forum.
I'm a retired biologist and a local member of Cameraholics.

Regards
