Getting into the habit of turning it off above shutter speeds of 1/640s or so when shooting sports, and whenever panning (had a few photos ruined thanks to it being on).

I don't have the money, need or want to run 2 systems. So unfortunately the more and more I hear about Nikon's new offerings, along with a wall of silence from Pentax, the closer I'm getting to switching before I invest any more coin. I think I'll give Pentax another 8-12 months...

Whilst this can be true....
You forget how little 'necessity' actually comes into it, necessity is irrelevant. For 99% of users who aren't pro, and the absolute majority on these forums who are enthusiasts pursuing this as a hobby, then those little advantages and differences add up. IF FF is what someone needs to be happy with their photography and the style they like, then that's what they need.

+1 to this. Without big value for money that was the K-r and K-5, Pentax doesn't have a leg to stand on with their high end APS-C up against Nikon's latest offerings. Case in point, the scarily affordable pricing of the D800....

Here's a few from the GP this year. Happy but unhappy at the same time, got some shots I wanted, but missed ALOT not having my monopod either through camera shake or not having a slow enough SS for panning whilst trying to combat the shake... That's pretty much it. For film, they make sense as they can be smaller than an SLR (I own 4). But on digital.....what is the reason to want one? M4/3 / mirroless cameras are the same size without the disadvantages of an RF?

I guess I'm an odd one out with all this. I want a FF Pentax DSLR, but the existence of digital RFs just confuse me....

I want one to gain on the wide end, larger sensor area to enhance the OOF area (ie. more background blur at a comparative f stop) and most of all for the increased high ISO performance.

I think i'd appreciate a mirrorless FF as much as one with a mirror, however the caveat being it looks, smells and interfaces like a regular DSLR. The K-01 sure looks like a nice camera but for my uses is pointless, need a decent sized weighty body with VF... My concern if Pentax do go mirrorless FF in 2013ish, will they take the 'unique' approach to far and produce something in a package more like a K-01 than a K-5? That would send me running to Canikon...but would they really go that 'unique'?

I don't know what disappoints me more, no FF in the foreseeable future or the reason there won't be. I could understand if it would be a burden on their allocated resources or wasn't financially viable at this time. But ignoring the requests from this many of your customers because you won't be filling a unique niche of some sort, is offensive. Reminds me of when I was younger, guys going and buying idiotic impractical and junk cars (or anything for that matter), for the simple reason of being percieved as unique or cool.
Guess what Pentax. The k-r and k-5 are in no way unique, yet make up what % of your sales in comparison to your all so important 'niche' products?

I actually didn't even watch the auction as I was expecting 0 bidders again, then I was gonna swing by and grab it (seller couldn't pull the auction off early)....but got an email saying the bidder was false and it was mine if I wanted it. I must say it's smaller than I was expecting, but heavier! Did the old 'nearly drop it on the ground' trick, as I was expecting it to be lighter haha.
The only thing i'm dreading is 3.5 odd kg of camera and lens, and not being allowed to take a monopod...

Bidder was non paying, so I've grabbed it :p (as I checked it out last week and it's like new condition). The final thing that pushed me over the edge was a K20D for sale near me, and being in Melbourne for work when the GP is on this year, pick it up in a week. However now in longer lenses I have Sigma's 70-200/2.8, 100-300/4 and 300/2.8.....which seems excessive to me.
On the Pentax 560/5.6. As Cmohr has said, $5000+ is a more realistic price, I don't have the cash or need for that (600/5.6 via TC is fine by me). And most events here don't allow in anything over 300mm through the gate (300/2.8 + TCs seems like a good compromise :p).

So ridiculous. If Sigma keep holding lenses back from k mount, eventually that might push me to Canikon (if Pentax doesn't step up). But if that happens, there's no way I'm buying Sigma lenses in those mounts anyway, I'll be buying L glass etc...so stupid...

Well Sigma either hold their cards close to their chest and don't care too much about what Pentaxians think, or this lens ain't ever coming in K mount.
Kind of annoying, got the Sigma 70-200/2.8 and 100-300/4 (currently broken, think its just a dodgy mount connection, I hope), but have LBA, love motorsports and am heading to Africa in 2013 maybe. So now there's a cheap 300/2.8 going around here, would you try and get it or wait and keep hoping? If the 120-300 wasn't as sharp I wouldn't have a dilemma, but it's sharper and zooms! Godammit Sigma.

That's part of the advantage of having the flash near the stands, the further the subject is to begin with, the less that distance will change as they move around the court and subsequently the less the exposure will be affected.

I've been shot at with flash from the baseline and it was still unnoticeable. But that's not the set-up I would use. I would be more inclined to do as David Hobby does and have 4 flashes at each corner in the stands firing off wireless triggers. And no the distance to the player won't degrade image quality, light is light, you just need to use more power the further your light source is from the subject (or wider aperture/high ISO, but that's a technique matter).
I would say at this stage a faster lens might be the first step, then speedlights, then a new body. But it comes down to your wallet and how soon you want to work on improving the shots, as you can go the speedlight route for even less than 1/4 the cost of a 70-200/2.8.

I've found as both a photographer and a player:
1. You won't notice a flash going off while playing sports.
2. I've shot myself in the face with a YN560 at 1/2 power from 1', I was stunned, but not affected in any way if I wasn't staring at it.
3. You won't notice a flash going off while playing sports.
In regards to your options, I'd say #1 is the go. The K-5 is better, but not THAT much better to accompany a kit lens, fast glass will provide higher image quality than the kit lens. Then when you upgrade later you have nice glass for a nice new body .

If you don't have the cash for a fast lens or two (I like a 30/1.4 and 70-200/2.8 combo, I find a 50mm too short in the stands and too long on the floor), or a K-5 as well, then don't rule out some cheap manual flashes and wireless triggers. Definitely a good budget way to add more light and make slower glass perform well in that situation.

That can be used effectively on film, as you expose for the shadows, but less desirable on digital. As soon as the ISO exceeds 400 I steer clear or trying to up the exposure in post as it can send noise through the roof.
What is important when shooting with higher ISOs is to make sure you have a correctly exposed photo, this will give you the cleanest images. If that means bumping from 3200 to 6400 then do it. You will be better off with a correctly exposed photo at 6400 that one slightly under at 3200, and much better than well under at 1600.
If you don't want to shoot manual, not having TAv mode I'd usually set Tv to 1/500 and auto ISO which keeps me shooting wide open at 2.8 (mostly 800-5000ISO). I'd say a lens at least 2.8 or greater is required, I know there are times the 70-200/2.8 is stretched for BBall, I will probably go to a K-5 for this and a couple of other reasons.

As autumnbringer alluded to above, black is for those who want to look the part ;). 50 years ago Yashica RFs and TLRs were silver beasts, but were later released in all black to accommodate the fashion and appearance concious togs .
