Lighting was overcast and it had just stopped raining within the minute of that shot taken. Taken with the Kx flash from about 1 meter away. The flower was a bit more pink in real life, I think the flash washed the colour out a bit, and it came back slightly more purple in post production. I wasn't completely worried about the colour when taking the shot, more worried about illuminating the water droplets :)

It really makes sense when you think of it this way, the difference between 18mm and 36mm is 18mm's and double the original focal length, so roughly double the amount of "zoom". The distance between 36mm and 54mm is still 18mm, but is only 50% more than the original focal length. To get double the amount of zoom from a 36mm lens you would need a 72mm lens. That explains why the "zoom" is a lot more pronounced at the wider end of the lens
