Could be a hardware problem but you should do a "reset" in Custom settings menu if you haven't already before making that conclusion. Check that your "Auto EV Comp" is not set to "ON"

More info for you:

1. Hopefully you saw the following note on the DealersDealDirect product page for LR4

(This is a DOWNLOAD ONLY product. When purchased, this will require you to register at Adobe. Once registered, you will be sent instructions that include your Adobe download link and issued serial number for product installation, activation, and registration. **This download comes to the customer directly from Adobe and IS NOT third-party hosted.**)

This just means you should set up an account on the Adobe site. If you already have an account then you don't have to do anything. You don't have to own a Adobe product to set up an account.

When you get your serial number go to the "help" menu option in LR4 and you will see selection to enter serial number (activation} and also register product. If you want you could register in your Adobe account (add a new product}

1-2 days from your "order date" for them to e-mail your Adobe LR4 serial no, Mine took 2 days. No problem - it will come with download link also. You should have already received your order confirmation e-mail.
If you haven't already you can download LR4 from the Adobe site then put your serial number in when you get it.

[Help] Pentax K-5 II Overheat Problem
Posted By jcp5
Replies: 27
You big problem starts with the fact that you have a black LCD screen when in Live View mode. That means:

1. Your mirror may not be moving up when you go into LV/movie mode. When you push the LV button do you hear the mirror going up. Do you hear anything? If not that's why you have a black lcd screen.
2. Your lens may not be opening or not seated correctly thus blocking all light. What lens are you using? Remove your lens and confirm the shutter blades open/close properly.Put your lens back on the camera and try again. See if you get a picture on lcd when you go into LV mode.
3. Try using a different lens
4. Firmware version doesn't have anything to do with your problem of your blocked light path in LV so don't worry about that right now.
5. Tell us if you can take a picture successfully when not in LV mode.
6. Take that video light off for now and move your AF SEL to the to single point/top position for testing. This should not solve your blocked light path problem but do it anyways.
7. Your blinking red lights are a result of having (in your case) a blocked light path.
8. I assume you have a black screen in movie mode also...right?

Let us know how you make out. If there is a problem with your mirror not moving you will need service. Did LV/movie mode ever work since you got your camera?

Worth the $40 to get these additional significant features for Elements. I have Elements 11 and it installed with no problems. Very nice that all the features are integrated into Elements menu system.
"The Plugin Site" does a nice job describing the product. The compatibility chart shows which features are active/apply for different versions of Elements. Thanks for the link. Useful & affordable.

I found my "confirmation email" in my spam folder (gmail) so check in yours. It has your invoice and download links. I made a NIK S/W folder in gmail and saved there to have the links etc. They are not issuing license keys so none in email. I also saved the downloaded setup file to an eternal drive and DVD. No NIK Plugins before I purchased the collection and the installer worked well. Auto installed plugins in LR4 and PS Elements 11. (Win 7 Pro 64 bit)

Should show on your credit card as "NIK BY Google INC."

Once your lens is received by CRIS (CRISCAM.com) you can call them (Phone:800.799.0293) and get login info so you can follow your lens repair online as it goes through the repair process. The repair form you view will show your repair status/what they did to fix it and the date they ship it back to you with tracking number. They will ship it back to you in a new box packed very well for safe travel.

Lens cleaning recommendations

This is very true. Lots of sub-par/ineffective products out there. Same applies for sensor cleaner solutions. The following products are what I use - There are other choices so use what works for you.

1. Pancro - Designed to clean camera lens - non-streak/no residue/effective etc. - right tool for the job - Number one product for professionals who have to use it way more frequently then me.
2. Visible Dust products - solutions & swabs - designed to clean camera sensors - non-streak/no residue/effective etc - Lots of happy customers including me.

DIY guys are happy with their methods and that's all that matters but I am not a chemist. Cost is minimal considering I don't have a need to clean lenses or sensor very often. When I do I want the the best product I can get for the job.

Safe/non-streaking/no residue/ effective which results in minimal rubbing of the lens and minimal contact with a camera sensor. My 2 cents.

“PANCRO Professional Lens Cleaner Non-Streaking Non-Residue Non-Toxic Fast-Drying” - 4 oz bottle for $15. I bought it from Filmtools.com but evsonline.com sells it also. It works great - as advertised. Bottle has a good locking spray top.

K5 double trouble, plus a few more things.

If your K5 is out of warranty it could still be covered under repair warranty from when Pentax fixed your "battery depleted" problem. If Pentax did replace the main ckt bd for that problem and then replaces it again to repair your new mirror flop problem then no charge to you as the replaced part/repair has a warranty also. The other repair for mirror flop is the "mirror overrun repair" which has nothing to do with the battery depleted problem.

Anyways keep alert to make sure you don't get charged for the repair if any of the above applies. Make note on your the "repair input form" that you just had a repair and the date to give them a heads up. Ask them to clean your on/off switch while they have your camera open. I doubt they are going to charge you for spraying it from both sides with some contact cleaner and making sure it's right.

You should be aware that you do have the option to order a K5 replacement LCD and replace it yourself. If your not comfortable doing it I am sure you can find local resources to help which includes a friend or relative that is "right for the job".

1. SmartPhoneBay.net -- K5 replacement screen -$43--Tools to Install--$5-- Hong Kong. China/Hong Kong are were their all made anyways. They say OEM but send e-mail to verify.
2. EBAY -- there are at least another couple Hong Kong sellers with K5 replacement LCD's. Best I know K5/K7/KR all uses the same LCD. The prices are all around $45.

This is your cheapest way out. As long as you haven't noticed any degraded functions/AF etc. from the fall. $50 is not such a big risk. Just an alternative to consider.

My opinion --- I would send back the K30--Buy another K5 at the now bargain price--Fix the K5 you have for $50 if all else is well with it. Then be happy and successful with two identical cameras with same controls that take the same accessories. Good Luck.

Neither of those cleaning tools are effective for stains (stuck on molts/water/oil/chemical). You would have to do a wet cleaning with cleaning fluids meant to remove those kinds of stains.

Recommendations for good Digital Photography Book

mcook-- lots of choices when comes to books. Here are 2 suggestions for books that had the right mix of content/application for me. Both very well written.

1, Exposure Photo Workshop (second edition) - by Jeff Wignall If you look it up on Amazon you can get a "Look Inside" to see TOC and some content.
2. Digital Expose Handbook by Ross Hoddinbott-- Also well done -- Be aware that this book uses a smaller print size.

It is really important to invest in a book on the PP software you use. Have fun!

K5 Mirror Flops - Smoking Gun Found

If it's a mild case/random occurrence of mirror flop problem CRIS will do "mirror overrun repair". If it's the hardcore version where it "mirror flops" on it's own or when you push any button they will replace your main ckt bd. If it's the version that seems to be associated with fully charged battery they will replace main ckt bd. If they have to replace your ckt. bd they should do mirror overrun repair to prevent that problem from happening in future.

One thing you can do to help any service tech is describe your symptom as accurately as possible on your "repair input form". CRIS understands this problem very well since they have been repairing mirror flopping K5's since early 2011. Which version of this problem do you have and how many times has it happened? you should state this on your input form.

They are supposed to do full QC check of your camera but IMO/experience the best way to use CRIS or any service center to make sure known problems are repaired is to request it on your input form. Keep this list as short as possible:

1. Sensor stains -- easy to test for yourself so you should know if you have them or not. If you don't leave it off your list.
2. AF calibration -- Yes--If they have to replace your main ckt bd. to fix your problem they will have to do this calibration anyways.
3. Request "Lens Release button repair"---they will glue it in
4. Shutter button switch - request they clean this switch--easy enough for the tech to clean it with some electronic contact cleaner while its opened up for repair. Simple preventative measure.

These are my suggestions--pick out what you want. Good luck.

It's my understanding that Pentax will honor your "order date" for that warranty being in the first 30 days. If you have any concerns because it is getting close to your 30 days and your warranty is still back ordered go on the Pentax USA support site and ask the question via their "live chat" feature. Snip and save their answer which has always been positive in the past. Adorama is another good dealer to get this warranty from---another option if needed. Call first to see if it's in stock.

OK-good--Since it has only happened twice don't worry about it. This garbled LCD screen on pwr up has happened to more then a few K5 owners including me. The common story is "only happened once or twice and never again" My K5 did it once and never again. It would have to happen more frequently or all the time to consider service and it isn't now so ignore it and enjoy your K5.

You have a 1 year manufacturer warranty and you bought the "Extended Pentax 2 year Warranty" for $20--right?---so you are insured properly. I have my cell phone on me all the time as I am sure most do---with no problems--- so don't worry about that.

lol--of course it's my opinion--now back to business---the 11" is the length laid out with uni-loop attached--off the camera. Its 9.5" attached to camera with no wrist in it. It is about 5.5" on camera with your wrist in it snugged up and of course you can adjust it to be longer if you need to---it's a neoprene strap so even snugged up it has some give to it---Hope that helps.

For a DSLR order "OP/TECH USA 6701062 SLR Wrist Strap, Neoprene Camera Wrist Strap (Black) $8.95". It comes with uni-loop so you will have what you need. It is a really good wrist strap that you can adjust to your wrist size as snug as you want and the price is right. I have been using it for a year now and it is very durable/proper width and the only Op/Tech "wrist strap" model you should be using to support a DSLR.

Luma Cinch - Pure Awesomeness ?

I have been using the Cinch strap for a month now and it delivers exactly what is described in the Luma-Labs video and write up which are very well done. I have used OP-Tech & Sun Sniper sling Straps and "for me" the Cinch Strap delivers on the features I wanted. Very comfortable and versatile. It can be worn as a sling/shoulder/neck strap. Only high quality parts on this strap.

One of the things that impressed me compared to other straps I have used is it's "very low profile presence" when worn. No bulky shoulder pad, no quick clips and no high profile camera connection lugs. You will also appreciate how well it goes in your bag. Folds up nicely whether I am packing it away in my backpack/sling bag/small shoulder bag.The strap camera lug is very low profile/high quality part.

Another important feature is that I can use the Cinch strap on the left side of my camera. This puts the strap away from the right side/control side and out of my face when doing verticals especially with grip.

I have an Op-tech wrist strap that I use on the left side of my camera which works well for me with grip on or off. When using the Op-tech sling attachment I have to use it on the right side-by design-which does not work for me.

I am not usually a fan of neck straps for walk-around/street shooting. The fact that I use my grip most of the time adds enough weight that there is the eventual fatigue and strain on my back plus for walk around everybody sees you coming. With the Cinch trap I can easily use it as a neck strap then put my arm through to go back to sling mode, Very easy to switch "styles of carry" for different situations.

I do like the sliding carabiner and swivel camera lug on the Sun Sniper but not the bulk of the shoulder pad which has to be centered and the single point connection that has to hold the full weight of my camera with grip. It also puts the camera "lens out" with the camera back rubbing against me and to much bounce/swing. Not so with the Cinch strap which is so "low profile" most wouldn't think "camera strap" if they even notice. Very comfortable and effective in a desirable/understated way.

The cinch allows you to easily adjust the camera position on the fly. Very useful when you want it cinched close to your body or more around your back "lens down" when hiking/climbing/boating-- you just pull up or down on the cinch tab to the position you want. Very stable--much less bounce/swing--always adjustable--no need to have a hand on camera--very nice.

I tend to use it as a sling most of the time but also over the shoulder/neck strap for different situations and it is a very comfortable strap---no fatigue--.
If you want to read more "user discussion" on the Cinch just goggle "Cinch camera strap review"
