Travel tripod for 645n - good for backpack, not too expensive?

I feel sure I have read that the 645N 's so-called mirror slap is on the return and that when taking the shot it doesn't adversely affect it. In a comparison between the P645N and Nii on another forum quite a few users seem to suggest that the mirror lock on the Nii is an extra feature that made little difference.

I cannot comment on what weight the tripod needs to be to be stable but clearly the OP needs to be sure about how much adverse effect the N's lack of mirror lock up has.

Pentax 645 FA 75mm 2.8 or ?

+1 For a 645 lens it is light, tiny and has pretty good autofocus for a MF lens. Someone mentioned $500. There was a time not so long ago that you could buy a 645N with its FA 75mm lens for not much more than $500.

If your eyes are a problem and I appreciate such problems being of a similar age then the "A" lens used manually has the ability to tell you its in focus by lighting up the green hexagonal.

Troubleshooting - 2 out of 5 blank rolls from 645NII / 120mm

Were the 2 out of the 5 that were blank loaded in sequence? This might help to establish if the problem is intermittent or started on roll 4 and continued on 5 and is potentially still there. If the screen showed that each frame moved in front of the shutter and you could hear the movement and the roll ended up fully on the top spool but there is nothing on any of the frames, it suggests that no light was getting to the film. With a 645 SLR this cannot be as simple as leaving the lens cap on as this shows in the viewfinder. So unless there are other ways that light is blocked which I cannot think of, then the shutter must be stuck shut. If the shutter is not working at all on a whole two rolls then this does suggests the rolls will be sequential. An intermittent sticky shutter which completely closes the shutter for two rolls then works perfectly on the other three sounds unlikely.

On this basis the rolls have to be either 4 and 5 or 1 and 2. If it is 1 and 2 then the shutter problem might have disappeared. If it is 4 and 5 then it might disappear if you use roll 6 but I'd be sceptical.

I have a N and not an NII but I assume that it is possible to check the shutter opening without film.

Filter Sizes of 645 Lenses

Have a look at the MF 645 lens section on the site. I thought that it carries the lens thread sizes for each. If you haven't bought any filters yet then make sure you buy the set of filters for the largest lnes thread and use stepping up rings. It can cost a fortune to buy what might be 2 or even 3 sets of lenses. Alternatively use the large square filter holder such as the Cokin P and then one set of filters is all you'll ever need

P645N Large Eye Cup Problem

I have the above on my camera. Eye cup is really the wrong description as it is totally flat with nothing to "cup" the eye. and therein lies the problem I suspect. As I only got the camera a few weeks ago and had very dull light conditions I have had no problems until this Saturday when we had strong sunshine in my part of the U.K. Then I noticed that I could see what I assume to be the image of the round viewfinder glass in the viewfinder( circle) when shooting at an angle that put the sun to the side of my eye.

When the sun was behind me and the back of my head blocked the light the problem disappeared. I have sinced developed the film and even when the problem in the finder showed itself there was no issue with the neg. So I think it is purely a reflection in the finder but it is disconcerting.

If the sun is to my right side the I can hold up my hand by the eyecup and this would seem to work but I cannot shoot as the shutter is also on the right and besides the camera really need two hands to steady it given its weight.

Anyone experienced this problem and if so any thoughts on how to overcome it?

Thanks

Ken Rockwell is Wrong

Well Mr Rockwell has managed to generate a thread started as recently as 5th May that is now 6 pages long. Not many can do that. Reminds me of Muhammed Ali saying that he based his early boxing "persona" on a wrestler called "Gorgeous George" who generated income for his bouts by making everyone hate him so they'd buy tickets just to see him get beaten.

Still works very well

On a slightly more serious note Mr Rockwell nailed his colours to the mast when he praised the intuitive layout of the P645N. Any new model which was going to depart from this was not going to please him.
