with fixed super bright crap screen the main advantage of having good k-mount FF camera with big OVF disappears unless shooting with modern AF tele lens.
Even with AF lenses i do 80% shots in manual, definitely my focus and recompose tech is very poor, so till installation of s-type screen to my k5 had more than 50% shots missed in AF mode and 80% missed in manual when using 31, 43, 50 and 77, and most important for me 90 2.0 cron is veery hard to focus without s-type screen. Of course there is live view but really hate it

its simple thing with this lens, you have to focus manually exactly at that point you need to be sharp (use ee-s screen or liveview), do not recompose

Yes ee-s is darker at small (past 4.5) apertures but its muuuch easier to nail focus whith it even in dark conditions and metering is also very consistent in difference to split screens which affect metering.

Had the same with my FA31, the problem was in some loosen screws inside the lens. QC was really poor for 1k$ lens. So maybe its not firmware in Your case too

If You are looking for a nice lightweight walkaround AF film slr that accepts all DA/FA/K pentax lenses look at zx-l (mz-6) 1/4000 shutter is handy sometimes and AF is really not bad got mine on ebay for 30$ or build like a tank Z-1P but it costs more

Have had for about one year now, works fine.I think to prevent sdm failure simply don't turn focusing ring while motor is active especially in AF-Cont. mode as doing this instantly overloads it.

i've just checked mine without any lens attached and it prompted to enter fl. FL is impotrtaint for SR proper operation.

Maybe You have turned off shake reduction?
when SR is off there is no prompt for FL input

Dont forget that you can always crop image from FF (of course if its 20-25mpix sensor)

With the same lens (same A setting e.g. 2.8) and same FOV you will have less blur and larger DOF whith crop sensor. with FF i can come closer to the subject stop down to F4 and will get razor sharp image with same blur and same DOF as i have at 2.8 with crop.
And i really want K mount FF camera so still waiting for Pentax and still using film pz-1p along with K5
