They are sometimes called "perspective control" lenses, because they allow you to change the apparent angle of perspective lines. They are especially used for architectural photography, since it is often not practical to move yourself to where you need to be—imagine photographing a 100 story building. You would have to be over 60 feet in the air to avoid foreshortening!

I need a telephoto zoom for my kit, but I have very little money to spend.
In the price basement of lenses, am I generally going to do better with a 1970s-vintage Pentax or a modern Tamron/Sigma?
Things I can't stand:
- Weird wide-angle distortion (excessive barrel or that God-awful Sigma mustache distortion)
- Excessive vignetting
Things I can:
- Less-than-great sharpness
- Some chromatic aberration
With these ridiculous demands, can anyone recommend me a particular lens from either era?

So the field of view on my K100D when I have my DA 18-55 all the way wide is the same as a 27mm on a full frame, and all the way tele is the same as an 83mm?

I was watching a DA 40 Limited on eBay, and noticed the seller says it has a 60mm equivalent view because of the crop factor. He says he's used it for a year on a DSLR and gotten a 60mm view, and that there's no vignetting with a film or full-frame digital SLR.
As I understood it, the focal lengths of the DA lenses are calculated for an APS-C sensor, so no crop factor is involved; which is right?
His message:
"Thanks, but that is not how I understand it. The lens is in fact designed for the smaller image circle, but the 40mm is a 35mm frame designation and is affected by the crop factor of the APS sensor. I've used the lens for a year, and it produces a 60mm angle of view on a DSLR. It works fine as a 40mm on a 35mm slr, with no vignetting. "

I think so, though I am not entirely sure. I thought a specific brand was mentioned, but maybe it's just whichever Chinese company is selling it this week. :P

Anyone used one and have anything specific to note about it? I need an external flash, I would like P-TTL capability and I'd like to buy Pentax, but the 360 and 540 are too costy for me (and the 540 is overkill).

There was some discussion a while ago about a cheap ($20-$30) wireless flash trigger system available regularly on eBay, but I can't find it with search, and eBay search is not turning up the ones I remember seeing.
Anyone have a link for the eBay seller, or the precise name of the product?

Update: I've taken three or four dozen flash pictures since my last post. Same behavior: full battery, depletes to half after a few shots, back up to full after a few seconds.

The K10 does not have a rocker zoom control...how is that going to be implemented?
Overall, it seems like a worthless feature. No way a motor can twist the zoom ring from wide to tele as fast as (or faster than) I can.
Why would I even want it to? One of the advantages of SLR lenses is that you can zoom instantly to whatever focal length you want.

You can set the K100D to AF on remote shutter release. It's in the Custom prefs pane.
Also, here's a cheap dedicated remote release (with AF control and shutter lock) on eBay: Cable release.

I hear a lot about lenses being "power zooms". Does this mean the zoom mechanism is motorized, or that it has an internal focusing motor, and is also a zoom lens? I don't see how a lens with a zoom ring, attached to a camera with no zoom control, can have motorized zooming.

Raw files can store any given format of image data, since it's just the datastream from the imager. You could have a 64-bit, 9-channel raw image if you wanted.
JPEG files are indeed 8 bit, but in the same way a good lens can make a mediocre camera perform a bit better, giving the JPEG codec better/more detailed data can only improve the output.
It's the flipside of GIGO (Garbage In, Garbage Out). :P

I know a couple people here and elsewhere have been wondering about the new Eneloop batteries, and since I just bought some I figured I'd share my experiences.
THEY LAST FOR-BLOODY-EVER.
You can't imagine how much of your battery life is lost to NiMH air discharge til you use Eneloops. I bought a set on Friday and I have not had to charge them yet. The fact that they come charged is pretty endearing, too.
I've probably shot, reviewed, and deleted at least 200 RAW and JPEG images, about half with the flash over the course of the past three days. My K100D still says it has full battery, going down to half after several shots, then back up to full after a bit of a rest.
The Eneloops are 2000mAh batteries, but they have already outlasted my 2600mAh NiMHs in days of average use; even though the old NiMHs have more total power, they do not provide even half the real-world performance.
They're costier, but worth every single penny. I paid $12 for 4 AAs; I'd gladly pay $20.

Does anyone know what SDHC class the K100 is capable of?
