I must admit that after painstakingly reading the first 62 pages of this thread, I started skimming. I wasn't considering upgrading at all but now that I know it comes with bacon I'm really excited about the K3! At least that's what I thought I read.

Landscape Red Moon Attempt

I like the colors!

One thing that surprised me when I first tried to photograph the moon is how fast it's moving... or we're moving... whatever. Anyway, I found I had to shoot much faster shutter speeds, and since it's so far way, wide open aperture let me get away with faster shutter. Depending on the lens, that might also mean giving up a little zoom and cropping later and/or bumping up the ISO a bit more.

I love this thread idea! I haven't been around much lately, but over the years, I've played around with hings like holding Canon and Minolta lenses onto my Kr body by hand because they don't mount to shooting "macro" shots of bugs through a bunch of extension tubes by hand-holding the camera and rocking back and forth until the critter was in focus.

This one is a favorite of mine. It's the camera taking a photo of itself by using a couple of mirrors and a remote to fire the shutter.

This one involved a polarizer and an old school cross-filter screwed onto the lens to shoot some ice melting.

This was an old 50mm/1.4 with some of those screw on magnifier (close up) filters.

Shot an upside-down lens through another lens (which inverted it) and move the camera back and forh until the back lens was in focus.

I've tried the zooming while the shutter is open a few times and I never could get it right. It's neat seeing the variations on that theme int his thread. Great stuff!

The Single-In Challenges here on Pentax Forums. There was something about being forced into a single lens for a month and needing to shoot something every day that forced me to explore composition and technique in ways I hadn't. Commenting on everyone else's daily images exposed me to them and caused me to "deconstruct" their techniques which obviously led to more ideas, inspiration and learning. It's hard to be disciplined enough to do it, and many nights I found myself shooting things around the house at 11pm to get my upload done in time, but that was all part of the process and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Each of the months I participated in yielded several of my absolute favorite images.

but eventually we got there. I think this was my 18-135mm and EXIF shows it to be at 88mm for this. I was sitting on the ground and holding an off-camera flash in my other hand.

Do we have any Topaz wizards here?

I'm no Topaz wizard , but when I've created images like what you're wanting, I use different tools. I'd suggest trying Topaz re-mask to separate the subject and the background into two layers. It's pretty easy to brush around the edges of that box with the compute brush and fill the inside with the CUT and tweak the sliders until the mask looks right. Then, once they're in separate layers, you can just reduce the saturation of the background elements.

NOTE: I've also done this by hand many times by duplicating the entire image into a second layer and then erasing the background from the top layer. Same idea.. it just takes MUCH longer but it gives you pixel-by-pixel level control over what ends up in each layer.

Photography has taken a backseat to the rest of life for a bit, so I've been away and didn't see this! I may have posted this image elsewhere years back, but it's one of my very first shots as a Pentaxian!

Well, looks like busy home and work life took over again and Ive missed several days. So, unfortunately, I'm out for October. It has been really nice shooting again and being a part of this GREAT group of people. If things ease up I'll jump back in. Thanks to all for looking and commenting on what I did manage to post

Hey everyone! It's been a while. Really haven't shot much at all since last October. I do miss it and a Single In challenge just might be the ticket to getting back into the swing of things. I've had this Vivitar 135mm f/2.8 M42 lens for a while (I think it was one of, if not THE, first lenses I purchased outside of my original K-r kit. I never really took to the focal length. I'm not sure why. It's a fine lens and I think I can push myself to learn the length and have some fun. So, I think I'm in with it for October.

I really look forward to seeing everyone's images!

What a fun thread! I've participated in a couple of the single-in challenges here on the forum and more than once I've been caught at the last minute searching the house for creative inspiration. Here's one that I shot a while back that I don't think I've shared yet.

The kids had a "pond hockey" tournament on Lake Huron this weekend. It was quite brisk with 50+ MPH winds and temps in the teens. The bridge was closed for a while due to high winds and it was dark when we finally got across Friday night but this morning it was open and made for a nice drive-by pic.

Happy new year!! Well, it's a little late for most but I'm still up and since I visit PF almost every night, I thought I'd wish those of you that participant in this goofy thread a happy new year... Because honestly, it's the kind of lack of over-seriousness exhibited in this thread that makes this forum one of my favorites.

I'm moving into a new laptop and stumbled across this image. I originally shot it with my Sigma 70-200/2.8 for a single-in challenge last October but I wound up going with another shot that day (a bunch of hockey gear piled in the corner just to the right of the dryer in this photo actually). Yep, it's the inside of a clothes dryer... Anyway, when I found it today I immediately thought of this thread!

Recently I took my 9 year old to a local Corvette show. I walked around with my K-30 with the DA10-17 mounted to play with fisheye car photos. I managed to get a few I liked, but I digress... When I got my K-30, the intent was to sell my 1st DSLR, the K-r. However, it seems my 9 year old has taken an interest and even started asking, "Dad, is my camera in the bag too?". How do you like that? "MY CAMERA"?!? Well, after gently reminding him that it is still my camera until he can afford to buy it from me (I'll make him a good deal), the answer is now almost always yes.

Anyway, after making a short story long, I'm pretty certain he is the more talented photographer between us. Here's a few he snapped from the show using the K-r and a Tamron 18-250mm.

...and I think he might be a budding street photog too ;)

P.S. mattt, if you stumble on this thread, I never even told him your rule :D

After coveting the DA 10-17 for a while, I finally got one! Still figuring out the lens but we recently went to Shedd Aquarium and it was CRAZY CROWDED in there. I found the 10-17 to be awesome because I could squeeze right up to the glass and still get a huge field of view. The glass was pretty scratched up in many cases and I managed to catch quite a few reflections of the crowd as well but here's a few that turned out ok.

Thank you Heie for your great post! While everything you described in your post is quite a bit beyond the level of use I will ever have the opportunity to subject my gear to, it is EXACTLY the level of expectation I have when I consider the WR feature. When combined with the Pentax marketing of the K-30, testimonials like yours and and all of others set that level of expectation. It is great to hear from Heie (and all the other users) that you don't consider WR just as a safeguard against the unexpected but rather consider it a feature to be enjoyed. Having the ability to shoot water slides, rainy days, waterfalls, beaches, hiking trips, etc. without worrying at all about dust and water is a HUGE benefit of the K-30.

I stated in my earlier post in this thread that I would consider the WR feature something to be used like any other feature. In my mind it's no different than AF. AF works when there's an AF lens attached and even though that lens can be manually focused, AF isn't just for emergency situations when you can't MF. To that end, WR works when there is a WR lens attached and I see no reason to "save" it for emergency use. Now I realize that the OP did not have a WR lens, and I would not have attempted his test/demonstration without one, however, given the location of the leak, it is pretty obvious that the LCD seal is the issue and should be replaced.

I suppose the lesson of this thread for me is that WR "should" work and work REALLY well. However, thanks to the apprehension of those experienced users that consider it as only a safety net not to be tested, I will not be too hasty to sell my K-r so that I have a body to shoot with in the event my K-30 needs to get serviced. There's lots of good logic behind that anyway because honestly, ANYTHING could go wrong, it is a piece of electronic gear after all. But, after reading the posts in this thread, if this incident happens to me when/if I upgrade to a K-30, I will immediately be exchanging it or sending it in for warranty repair.

There seems to be a lot of people posting in this thread that feel that the WR feature of a Pentax camera is for emergency use only. I've read comparisons to airbags and HDD head parking... As I contemplate purchasing a K-30, one of the top 3 reasons I want it is to utilize the WR feature regularly. There have been several times since the announcement of the K-30 that I've either had second thoughts about taking my K-r with me or put it away due to situations and weather that involved the potential for the camera getting wet. I guess in my mind, testing the WR feature should be more like testing the brakes in your car. They are there and meant to be used in normal use as well as emergencies and there's not much harm in testing them if you've driven a long time without applying them.

If the general consensus of the experts on this forum is that the WR feature is to be reserved for emergency protection circumstances because testing it and expecting it to work is just asking for trouble, then I guess it shouldn't be part of my motivation for upgrading. (Not that there aren't other reasons... but WR is/was an important one to me)

I really enjoy playing with this effect and I have several examples but this one is one of my favorites because it was one of my very first shots with a DSLR. My K-r was new and I think this was shot on the 1st or second day I had it and was #177 :-)
