--FINAL PRICE ADJUST--
I'm selling off some of my Pentax gear as I'm moving over to Canon EF lens mount. Had a good run but the 1D is an amazing camera (among various other reason).

DA* 55 F1.4 - ORIGINAL OWNER. I have owned this since I purchased it in 2009 and it's been a fantastic lens. No issues that I can see with respects to back or front focusing (that's been more of a camera issue from what I can tell). Weather resistant, fast aperture, great build quality - hard for me to let go of this lens but, again, want to give it a good home to someone who will use it. Includes original box and papers, pouch and lens hood (no lens cap). Note: the lens cap is loose as the divets that lock it into place have worn over time. I put some tape and this allows it to "friction lock" onto the lens.
$ 360 USD and includes shipping to Canada + mainland USA (other areas, please inquire).

DA*55 F1.4 - slow?

I find the DA40mm F2.8 to (strangely enough) be quite fast and have to turn to that if it's a critical low light situation. Funny, you would think an F1.4 lens would be able to track better but not my lens. Like I said, this lens is great for a majority of things and if the lighting is good then it's usually pretty OK. Tracking though is semi-reasonable in bright light but go indoors and suddenly it starts to show some weaknesses. I know it's not a sport lens but I definitely need that extra bit of speed when things happen quickly.

The K3 would definitely be in my arsenal if I didn't already invest in another brand. However, not sure if the K3 will increase the speed of an SDM lens (Although it will probably focus quicker)?

DA*55 F1.4 - slow?

So I've been using the Pentax DA*55mm F1.4 lens for many years now and it never fails to impress me... well, scratch that. It almost always fails to impress me except for some very certain critical situations.

I shoot weddings and one of the toughest parts is being able to use this F1.4 lens to continually track a couple make their way towards me, away from me or just on their way to the table...or even to focus on them quickly as I see a shot come up. I use a K-7 (yes, I know, old technology) and also a K01 and with both cameras the AF on the DA*55 has been slow. Being in some low light and suddenly I'm missing very critical shots or have to revert to some various other focusing techniques.

I really love this lens but as my work is fast-paced, I'm beginning to wonder if it's time to part with it. I know there has been some AF improvements with the K5 and K3 and would like to know people's experience with the DA*55 F1.4 and perhaps the K3...has there been a speed improvement?
I'm awaiting the full frame and would love to pair this lens with that but if the AF is still troublesome...

I have this lens and it's amazing. I actually use it on my Pentax K01 as a "35mm equivalent". It suffers from flare but otherwise a fantastic lens.

Hi folks,

This is a very rare CV 40mm F2 for the Pentax K-Mount. I've used it quite often this year for a variety of shoots and really really like it a ton. However, I am in need of funding other cameras/lenses (notably an FA43 Ltd as I need autofocus and the Pentax FF camera in Spring 2016) so looking to sell this to someone who will make really good use of it :)

I also have two 40mm lenses so having another is somewhat redundant.

Have a look and if any questions, let me know :) Buy this lens and give it a good Pentax home!

My first wedding, the lesson learned.

It is definitely possible to shoot more documentary style weddings and with a Pentax too. Regardless of equipment, it's a tough job. We wedding photogs make it look easy but it isn't. On top of being technically sound, we need to know how to work with various personalities, setting expectations and delivering on what is essentially a portrait, engagement, uber low-light, uber bright-light, fast-changing-light, ISO 6400 and ISO 80 (in the same room) light, actions happening all around.... AND making clients happy all in between.

When I'm not shooting film, I shoot RAW files and Mastin Labs or Replichrome filters in Lightroom.

Cool that you got to experience the not-easy-ness of a wedding. :)

While second shooting a wedding, I was following the flower girls as they were making their way out the door. The light was just right and I quickly had to use the focus peaking ability on the K-01 to nail the shot. I saw the moment come together and quickly pressed the shutter. Fearing I didn't get the shot, I quickly checked the LCD screen and was happy it was in focus.
One of the girls started talking to me in the limo about the Avatar cartoon, to which we quickly struck up a conversation and debate about which super "bending" power we would want to have.

The FA43 (vs DA40) - misfocusing?

Hi folks,

As I'm an avid film user who needs AF (too many debacles in the dark trying to get in-focus shots) and likes wide-aperture lenses, I've taken a liking to the FA 43 Ltd lens. I had a chance to try it out recently for testers on my K-7 and noticed that the focus would seem to miss here and there... inconsistently.

While I'm aware the DA40 (currently mounted on my cameras) is a very fast focusing lens and probably the fastest of the Pentax range, I think I'd be able to live with the FA43 ... but I find it sometimes either misses focuses (When the camera thinks it's in focus) or just racks back and forth where the DA40 nails it.

Has this been people's experience with the FA43 as well??

Pentax FA 43 Ltd and low light

Hi folks,
So I have been thinking about getting the FA43 so I can pair it with my Pentax PZ1p. I have a DA40mm and love it but it's too slow at F2.8
I have the CV 40mm F2 Ultron and manual focus is OK on the PZ1p... but not perfect.

I've considered now the FA43 due to having autofocus ability and also an F1.9 lens for my low light work. I know autofocus is usually body-dependent but how is the AF when you pair your cameras with the FA43? Was it quick? Slow? Hunted more in low light (or less)?

Well, after trying it out for a bit, I can concur that the speed setting ring is impossible to turn! Other than that, it's a fine camera with a great view finder (from what I can tell). And actually not as loud as I recall it to be.
They (the store) were going to have the repair guy take a look at it and see if it can be fixed before he sold it to me. We shall see how it goes!

OK, I might get a chance to take another look at this camera tomorrow. What do you guys think? Looking to pair it up with a CV 40mm F2 Ultron for lower light shooting. If it has a split prism and really bright viewfinder, I think I could go with it...?

Had a chance to shoot my Super Program at a dinner and was quite concerned when, even with an F2, lens, I couldn't focus. It wasn't super dim but tungsten lighting seems to throw me off. Couldnt see the microprisms. Makes me wonder if a matte screen in the K2 would improve accuracy in this regard?

Just reading some comments and looks like microprisms are great in daylight but washout in low light?

Did you find yourself being able to get accurate focus even when it was an "all matte" screen when it got especially dark or dim - i.e. indoors in a restaurant or a church?
It gets even tougher when people/things are moving! At least even with the microprisms shimmering or unshimmering... without much light, it becomes incredibly difficult to then see if anything is in focus :/

Using film and digital together?

The last two engagement shoots I did were exactly this: film and digital together. Both DNG files and scanned negatives. Have a wedding coming up and plan to do the same.

Curious if anyone else does this? I'm mainly a film user and really love film but am finding myself starting to use digital more and more, notably with using Totally Rad's Replichrome so the images look similar. But honestly, I love the advantages of both so am trying to utilize both in my work and projects (although the focus is more on film, with the digital "acting" as a very flexible film camera).

Setup:
Pentax K-7 with whatever lens feels right ... meh, currently 24mm F2.8 Sigma MF lens.
Pentax PZ-1p with ... well, whatever lens feels right again but usually CV 40mm Ultron F2 or DA*55 F1.4
Pentax 645 with color film. Usually the 55mm or 75mm lens.

I do like the K2 quite a bit... at least from initial feels. The shutter is definitely not quiet (almost a definite "clack") but it's very firm.
Oh, for focus screens (and in the case of the Super Program) it's a little central split image + microprisms in a circle surrounding that + ground glass. In the case of the Pentax K2, it was a split image in the center and almost like a brighter ground glass surrounding and then the normal ground glass. Wish I had a decent image to show. I'm used to microprisms so curious how doing without it will affect my low-light focusing.

Hey folks, so I've recently been using a Pentax Super Program in combination with a fantastic Voigtlander 40mm F2 Ultron SLII lens. The lens is amazing and has really given me some amazing images. I find it really needs a manual focus camera with a great viewfinder and I usually shoot in manual mode (with a light meter) although aperture priority is always nice :)

That being said, the Pentax Super Program is good but I have some caveats with it. In all honesty, I'm looking for a tougher camera with a good focusing screen. Ran into a K2 with a split prism and matte focusing screen (no microprisms) and other than the fact that the shutter had this loud clack, it looked pretty good. Apparently serviced in 1991. Price is a bit high (it's in a local retail store) but... wondering what people think?

Was thinking of an LX but heard parts are becoming difficult to come by and most need a CLA?

Why do you still do film?

I spend 8 hours a day staring at a computer (not including smartphone time and watching shows on the internet) and... after a while, my eyes, mind and soul need a break. Film photography let's me rest by not having to stare at any screens anymore. I get pulled back to reality.
This is even more present in the darkroom where, if no music is playing, all I have is the sound of my internal voice talking. It's an oddly ... hmm.... spiritual experience...

Shooting film is a discipline in and of itself too. 24-36 shots (less with medium format) really forces you to *think* about your shots and what you want to photograph. Once you're done the roll and you develop the roll and get negatives back, you realize you have something #tangible in your hands. I've tried holding up an SD card to the light and it isn't quite the same ;) I've shot 36 frames and realized that I didn't load it properly only after I opened the back... like life, we all make mistakes. I learn from them, as in life, and make myself better because of it. I now load with a lot more precision and have mental checks and balances to ensure the film is actually winding!

I love the technology of digital that we have today as it's allowed me to experiment and also expand the potential of film photography ironically! In the end, it's a very personal choice and why one does digital or film or whatever else will come out can vary from a variety of different reasons. The important thing is to know your own vision, to own it and then use the media that portrays it best :) ... within your economic means of course.

Pentax 6x7 light leaks

I had similar issues with my Pentax 645 but ever since I changed the way I unloaded the spool, I found so far that the cause for error was mainly me.
If I'm outside, I'll unload my roll with my back turned against the sun so the insert is shaded. I then try to keep the paper backing tight on the back all while shading it with my body or an area that is shaded close by.
Not sure how practical the insert loading and unloading would be for the Pentax 645 if I had to create a makeshift changing bag to do it... but now I have some ideas :P

Why do you still do film?

The tactile nature of film is one of the main reasons I still use film today and continue to use it even when doing client work. The old mechanical cameras have this feel to them that's more "involved" than my other cameras. Even with the more newer PZ-1 and MZ series, you get pretty large viewfinders (for the most part) and still a more tangible experience than with digital.
On top of that, there's a roll of film, which becomes a negative. A negative is something you can touch, smell and taste (the latter two only if you so desire to.... although I do not recommend it). I can't "touch" my RAW files. There's a disconnect there with the experience.

All that being said, I still use digital (and currently Totally Rad's Replichrome). But I always have film ready to go.

Oh let's not forget batteries. Digital cameras tend to suck more electricity than equivalent-type film cameras (and some film cameras). If I forget to charge my battery and can't get back to my hotel or find a power outlet or something, I'm done for the day (and because they're all proprietary batteries, short of finding a decent camera store, good luck!). My Olympus OM1n, an all manual film camera, will still keep on going as long as I have the film to load it.

In conclusion, I just find there to be so many reasons to shoot film for me. It works for me. It won't work for everyone... but for me, it does.
