K-1 and Tamrn SP AF 300 ƒ2.8 with HD DA 1.4 TC.
400 ISO ƒ4, AV mode.

I was out there doing this routine in Algonquin Park, at the Cameron Road parking lot off of Opeongo road, a favourite destination for those who like to hold their hands out with a few seeds on it and have bird land on it.

This images is really taken a few kms down the road, at the Costello Creek picnic area. But I digress.
I was actually there to try and photograph the Grey Jays, who never turned up.

A lot of what you do is sit there with your eyes scanning the area looking for movement.

I'm also getting images of other birds coming to the seed I'd placed in strategic locations.

When looking for Gray Jays who are often carrion feeders, I often mix in small chunks of cheese, chopped dog kibble, chopped nuts and small chopped up bread cubes and peanuts in the shell.. Often there are other shooters in the parking lot, with their own seed mixes. I try and make sure mine is the best. I find, even though it's a mix for the Jays, Chickadees and nuthatches will also eat every part of this mix

There was a little movement off to the side and there was this guy.

This is a shot, but it's not "the shot" After this he moved back off into the bushes and while looking at other things I noticed the sun had moved enough that I was no longer getting the angle I wanted. my shadow was no longer pointing at my little pile of bird feed in the snow bank,

I left that pile to the Blue Jays and Chickadees, and set up a new pile in a snow bank on the other side of the plowed road.. There is a tree where when the Grey Jay pair come they often sit in the branches and check out the scene before diving in. I set up where if the Jays landed in that tree I'd have a good angle to the sun for some great pictures of them in a natural environment, and decent bokeh.

7 minutes later the young pine marten came out of the forest near my new food pile and started eating. He didn't seem to care, even when I moved slowly, changing position for better angles. He even stayed there when at one point a car drove between us.

Some direct light, dark background and bokeh, that's what I go for.

Images like this are determined by feed pile placement. He's not going where you want him to go unless he has incentive. This placement gave me the bokeh I wanted, after about 3 tries.

A bunch of birders turned up and he slowly retreated into the forest. He seemed fine with just one photographer, if there was going to be 5 that was too much. After he left the Jays came and took what was left. They had an interesting strategy. Half of them sat up in the tree to see if the pine marten was coming back, the other half pigged out at the feed pile. Pine Martins prey on small birds, I've seen Jays fly off into the woods tailing one, making sure everyone knew exactly where he was.

A guard Jay.

The Grey Jays never did come. Sometimes you just take what you can get.

Earlier in the day I did get some Grey Jay images by crashing another photographer's set up. I personally wouldn't have done what he did, but he was doing it his way, so nothing to stop me from moving up beside him. His whole focus was back lighting for that little bit of highlight you see outlining the jays, and a dark background with good bokeh. There was only one part of the parking lot that was good for him. Personally I prefer a dark background as he does, but direct lighting, for truer colour and contrast.

I didn't even have to put out any peanuts.

All these images require layered clothing that will allow you to sit comfortably out in the cold and wait it out.

We were just driving through, but sometimes you have to stop.

Ice and fog conditions made for some unique photographic opportunities.

The west gate on the way home...

When we got to Smoke Creek we saw where other photographers had stopped and stood.

Portage to Smoke Lake, looking a little unused at the moment.

Then on to the Algonquin Arts Centre which also screamed out to be photographed.

The pictures don't do it justice, I think you hd to be there. :D

At the Visitor's centre, A-400 and F 1.7x AF Adapter and K-1 with 28-105.
Opeongo Road images, Tamron 300 most with the HD DA 1.4 TC.

There is a new feeder at the Visitor's Centre, it's very popular with the grosbeaks.. you can see it in the middles of the photo hanging in that weird alcove kind of architectural feature. The older feeders are below it centre left at the bottom. K-1 nd 28-105)

Pictures from the Visitor's Centre deck....

Far out in the field a Fox expresses his displeasure that a fisher won't leave the road killed moose carcass dragged there by the park rangers, for your viewing pleasure. (A-400 and 1.7x without a tripod = no hope a clear image.)

You can check what's happening there live, although there's been very little activity this morning.

Also taken from the deck, on the new feeder

Waiting their turn in the nearby trees.

In front of the Visitor's Centre..

Photographers in the Spruce Bog Trail parking lot. I wonder if that guy on the left has noticed all those women have bigger lenses (not that size matters) . Those Sigma an Tamron 150-600s are getting to be real popular. In this group , approx. 4 of 12 shooters were using them, and all women. (you dudes keep that in mind next time you complain about the weight. Not only were they carrying them, they were using them hand held.) In my picture 2 of the 5 had them. The tall skinny girl's is unseen behind her legs hanging on some kind of lanyard.

Spruce Bog Trail ice.

Over at Opeongo road, the up close and personal viewing site. (Tamron 300 and HD DA 1.4 and K-1)

This first one shows the Vignetting caused by the HD DA 1.4 FF on the full frame. In some images it makes a difference, but on many, it is non-existent. Especially if you crop at all.

A young Pine Marten has learned that bird seed is a good dietary supplement, and that birds and squirrels that come to this parking lot for bird seed can make an excellent main meal.

Gray Jay at Costello Creek picnic area, (Tamron SP AF 300 LD [IF].

End of the day, Brewer Lake

Mild weather and bright sun makes for great days in the park.

Recently had the chance to lead some hikes for the Roan Mountain Fall Naturalist Rally. With the busy pace and great participation at these hikes, there's rarely time for the hike leaders to take any photos. So I planned to arrive early for my own hike up on the Roan Highlands to watch the sunrise.

Here are two views of the bright pre-dawn.

Here are some B&W views of the early morning mist.

And sun coming up over the balds!

Hope you will have the opportunity to visit this rich wild place for yourself sometime soon. Thanks for any comments & critique.

IN response to this thread...
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/12-post-your-photos/329919-nature-equivil...-hair-day.html

I thought I'd post my own...'birds having bad hair day" images...although I guess it should be birds having "bad feather" day images...

I'm noticing lots of finch type bad hair days, and some Blue Jay bad hair days, but no Chickadee or Gray Jay, or Sparrow bad hair days. I think the likely hood of bad hair days should be part of the naming protocol for birds. But first I need to know which birds are likely to have bad hair days.

I hope some of the rest of you will be contributing evidence.

Landscape Lake Superior Provincial Park

To quote Robbie Burns:
"The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
Gang aft agley"

I moved my son to Toronto over the long weekend and had arranged to spend a night in Sault Ste. Marie, take my time driving back along Lake Superior to Thunder Bay and then spend the next night in Dryden, so my final day of driving back to Saskatoon wouldn't be 16 hours long. Since 1985, I've driven from Thunder Bay to Sault Ste. Marie 6 times, but this would be the first time I drove this route in reverse and the first time I wasn't pushed for time. My plan was to stop at all the scenic lookouts and pull-outs and take lots of pictures, because I wasn't sure I would ever have the opportunity again.

The first good look at Lake Superior from the Trans Canada Highway comes at the southern portion of Lake Superior Provincial Park on Agawa Bay.

Lake Superior is huge, with a surface area of over 82,000 square kilometers, nearly the same size as Austria. It sits on extremely old geology, its rocks were formed before life as we know it existed on the earth.

It is possible to drive completely around Lake Superior, Highway 17 from Sault Ste. Marie to Thunder Bay is 700 kms, which gets you about half way around the lake. The lake is an awesome, wild force of nature, in spite of human development.

This beach is at Old Woman Bay, near the northern border of Lake Superior Provincial Park, there is a nice beach further south at Pancake Bay just north of Sault Ste. Marie and numerous sandy beaches on the southern shores along Michigan's Upper Peninsula and in Wisconsin from Ironwood to Duluth. However, not only is Superior large at the surface, it is deep as well, up to 406 meters deep. Deep water usually means cold water. Didn't prevent one courageous person from going for a swim in the lake.

There are very scenic viewpoints from the highway north of Marathon at Neys Provincial Park and the entire stretch from Terrace Bay to Thunder Bay is gorgeous. It was just after noon when I got to the town of Wawa and the Trans Canada Highway was closed due to a traffic accident 15 minutes north of town that resulted in four fatalities. The highway wasn't reopened until 5:45PM because local authorities had to wait for a special investigator from the south to do his work and the only detour possible involved going to Timmins and Hearst before meeting Highway 17 again in Nipigon, an extra 7 hours of driving! So I parked on the side of the road and waited.

The rain started before I was able to leave Wawa and it was almost midnight when I parked my van in a parking lot at Kakabeka Falls, just west of Thunder Bay. I didn't bother stopping anywhere else along Lake Superior. So no pictures of lakers at the port in Thunder Bay, no more pictures of rocky islands, steep cliffs and high waves to share. And it took me 16 hours to get home the next day.

K-3 and DA*200, by itself, with the 1.4 TC or with the 1.7x AF adapter. No stacking was needed today.
ISO 400, ƒ5.6 , AV

It's getting to be fall and the fruits are coming rises, which is perfect time for waxing to pig out. Tess found this bush on her morning run and sent me out to get pictures. She's my loyal scout.

There were 30-40 birds in this flock, all I had to do was stand there and wait for one to come close. Chasing was not allowed, they'd all leave. Moving your camera was not allowed, scratching your head was not allowed, but int eh end, worth it in my opinion.

That was good.......

Night Arctic winter night

I had a real treat around midnight on Friday. We have had cloudy skies for a very long time but then it cleared up. I headed out to my dark spot where I usually do my astrophotography. It is about 20 km away from city lights so it is rather dark. My camera is old and the only lens I have for wide angle shots is the slow kit lens. So taking crisp shots of stars is without the question since I get startrails or really noisy images as a result. But I can turn that disadvantage to something good, startrail photos. When startrails is what I strive for I can take shots with a low ISO and a long shutter time and get a bit less noise.

Anyway, I live north of the Arctic circle in northern Sweden. It was about -28c when I took the 40 or so photos that I blended together in Photoshop. So what you see is all that happened on the sky for 20 mintures. The whole procedure took about 90 minutes with all the settings fiddeling and all the time the camera took for processing the shots. Although I had dressed really warm I had to walk around all the time to prevent starting to freese. I had a really good time watching the northern lights, shooting stars and listening to the radio while the camera did the work. These moments is really like nourishment for the soul. Even though I am reall happy with the result to me the chase is more important than the catch.

Also in cold weather radio controlled remote shutters is a bliss!

I made a trip to Cape Kiwanda close to Pacific City, OR. I got there a little bit too late so I've missed some nice sun conditions, but overall I like what I captured. This is also my first attempt at HDR so I'm curious about your comments. I've posted some more pictures on my blog not sure if I should post them all here as well. The HDR were made using automated flow in Photoshop and Adobe Camera RAW.

This year it is 70 years ago that the south of the Netherlands was liberated and operation Market Garden took place. So in and around the Eindhoven area a lot of events have been scheduled to remember those facts. One of them was an organised trip with more than 300 vehicles from the south of the dutch border upto Nijmegen over the old roads used in WW II.
Here an impression of that event.

FWIW, I live about 35 miles from Canada and have bought and sold items to and from there. Shipping isn't a big issue, and I've never had any problems. I will however state that the Canadian postal service runs about twice as slow as ours, or at least that's been my experience in the past. And shipping UPS to Canada can be very expensive.

But the bottom line is it's your lens and you are entitled to sell where you wish. :)
