I love the tone and colors of #2 and #4. Very cool reflection in #2.

Too bad you got the reflection of the car in the barbershop window. Next time try to get someone to park their '57 Chevy in front! :')

Great stuff, you have inspired me.

Lilian, Help me understand. I couldn't get much closer to the action as I was already on the sideline of the pitch. I certainly don't have a professional level zoom lens. Would you like to see cropping to isolate just the girls involved in the action? That would be easy to do in PP. Also, the day was very dark and overcast with terrible light, so the exposure is a problem.

Thanks,
Scottydog

K20d On/Off Switch very hard to turn

At times the On/Off switch on my K20d gets very hard to turn. I can still get it to move, but it takes an amount of force that is certainly not "normal". I cant see a pattern related to weather, humidity, etc. It doesn't appear to be related to how long it has been in the bag. I am at a loss. Has anyone had the same issue? Any ideas? Should I take it in for service?

Thanks,
Scotty Dog

Thank you all for the advise. These did both come out of the camera with no PP. I have a lot to learn and look forward to using this forum as a place to help.

Cheers,

A couple of pics from the match this past weekend. It was a dreary, overcast day in Seattle (the norm). I got a couple of shots that I really liked, but they need some help to look more appealing.

Any advise for a rookie would be appreciated and accepted. Cropping, PP, Framing, Settings, anything.

I'm not sure I like the B&W. It's the colors of the sunset that make it so magnificent. I really like the road in the first shot. Makes me wonder what is over the hill. Takes my eyes and my imagination on a journey.

Freaks me out! I don't think I want to know how to do this to any of my kids. Even if it is just a photo.

The shoes are indeed a nice touch. Makes me wonder how someone could have stepped into the lake without disturbing the surface.

This is awesome. The ears back, terrified look of the little guy in direct contrast to the ears forward, playful yet somewhat aggressive look of the big guy. I love the perspective taken from their level.

Thank you for the great advice Tim. We had another match this past weekend and the sun actually came out for 20 minutes! (Gotta love Seattle). The sun light really helped and I got some great crisp action shots. Also, I used my Pentax DA 55-200 lens instead of the cheap Sigma 70-300. Anything I sacrificed in reach, I think I made up for in IQ. I am seriously considering a mono-pod after talking to another dad/photographer this weekend.

I am having the same reaction from the girls wanting me to post my photos. Three of them have used my shots as their Facebook profile picture. Now they all want me to capture the perfect action shot of them.

My first soccer game with my new toy. Took about 200 shots and found a few keepers. Any comments or critique is welcome. I am learning more every day, and loving it.

Thank you all for the help. I think I will take it in small steps. First, the tripod and some not-so-fast action shots. Next, I am looking for an older MF 1.4 -2.

I have a 14 yr. old daughter who plays Soccer and a 10 year old son who plays American football. They are the main reasons I have recently purchased a DSLR camera.

My new toy is a K20d with the 18-55 kit lens which I purchased from a friend who is upgrading, and an assortment of 3 additional lenses picked up from ebay and Craigs List.

Pentax DA 18-55 f3.5-4.6 kit lens
Pentax DA 50-200 f4-5.6
Sigma 70-300 (great for day time games)
Sigma 28-80 3.5-4.6

I know that none of these are very nice or very fast, but is there any way I could use them for shooting soccer under the lights? I have been fooling around a little at practice when the lights come on. I am only shooting hand held. I can hardly get photos that I can even read the numbers on the girls jerseys. :o

What about a tripod?

Should I miss the coming season saving my pennies for a good 2.8 or faster zoom? Should I look into a fast prime (say a 200mm). Are there any decent lenses that I could get for < $200 that would allow me to take shots that are at least good enough to make into screen savers at my office? Maybe an older Pentax MF from the film days?

I would appreciate any feedback at all.

Hey, I am a very amateur photographer who has never snapped a pic with anything other than a cheap point and shoot. I recently purchased a Pentax K20 from a friend who was upgrading, and I am hooked. How did a gadget freak like me not get into photography before?!?!

This forum has already been helpful with information on dust in the viewfinder and sports photography. I really want to be a photographer, not just a camera operator and I will use this forum as a tool to help me with that goal.

Thanks,
Scotty Dog
