Item Description
Selling my 645D and elect lenses. First let me summarise by saying I use my gear in the field. As a result exterior cosmetic condition is not excellent or like new; however, optics are kept great as I value image quality. Several of these lenses were selected as the best of two or three copies I acquired. I purchased the 645D new in 2011, best guess on the shutter actuations is around 10,000 (the last image on it was around 8,300 but I remember upgrading firmware shortly after purchase which I think reset the numbering to 0?).
I prefer to sell as a package first. Only after a month will I entertain offers on breaking it up. Any offer or request prior to that will be deleted and not read.
This would be a great set for somebody wanting to enter medium format digital without spending the cash on a 645Z and new costly lenses
Pentax 645D functions flawlessly; some cosmetic rubs and nicks.- 3 batteries
- 2 battery charges (1 Pentax with home depot style plug and one with 12v cigarette plug)
- 2 Really Right Stuff arca style plates (horizontal and vertical)
- Pentax wired remote
- Rare flip up Pentax viewfinder magnifier to aid critical manual focus
Pentax FA 300mm f5.6 with caps and hood. Again some rub marks and nicks on the barrel. Front and rear elements are flawless. This is a fabulous lens nearly as good optically as the star 4.0 version but significantly lighter and smaller making it actually handhold able if you can use a fast enough shutter speed. Focus can be lightly sticky if it hasn't been used in a month or two.
Pentax A 120mm 4.0 macro. Good cosmetic condition with minor cosmetic flaws. Silky smooth precise focus. In my opinion one of Pentax's finest lenses for 645 just short of the 645 600mm 5.6. Front and rear elements again flawless. Best of two lenses I tested. Preferred over the FA 150mm 2.8 for sharpness and great contrast even in landscapes.
Pentax FA 45-85mm f4.5 with caps and hood. The workhorse lens. Best of three lenses I tested. Good cosmetic condition with minor cosmetic flaws. Front and rear elements flawless.
Pentax A 35mm f3.5 with caps (hoods are rare and screw onto the front filter thread anyways). Favoured over the FA version. Flawless glass, was my second copy. Small dent in filter ring near the serial number; however, I have always been able to screw filters on securely about half way.
I have tried my best to honestly describe condition through the description and photos. Series buyers please ask any questions. I welcome checking it all out in person. I will take paypal if you cover the fees also no problem with a check/money order pending the short waiting period for it to clear. Cash is no problem if in person and it checks out with the marker.

I was hoping it would be in the same realm as the 35mm Art; but, it seems a bit shy of that. That lens is pretty much the current benchmark for a 35mm prime. It does edge out ahead of the Zeiss 35mm f2 if you presume the distortion is correctable so is probably comparable to the Zeiss f1.4 (If I am remembering right the 1.4 beats the 2.0). Results look good at 24mm so will be interesting to see how it compares to the Zeiss 25mm f2 (which is pretty close to the current 24/25mm benchmark prime). All in it looks like a few compromises were made to be a zoom but fewer compromises than a the likes of a 24-70...
It doesn't look like it will replace a Zeiss 25mm f2 and Sigma 35mm Art prime combination; but if you are looking for a bit better performance than a 24-70 but still want some zoom functionality it is a great option. Not to mention it is less than half the cost of the Zeiss 25mm/Sigma 35mm combination and probably similar weight in your bag. Correction the zoom is 325g lighter but you will loose that advantage with it's 82mm front filter...

I am guessing that Sigma has placed a lot of constraints in the design and performance will be similar to those primes. An important thing to note is that while these primes are sharp wide open they yield very impressive results stopped down, beyond current best of Nikon and Canon variants. That performance improvement is demanded by the high resolution sensors today. Shorter zooms in wide angle is becoming the norm today in trying to be up to muster on sensors. An updated 24-70 would surely have been a lower performer and not offered much of a selling point over current offerings. As much as Pentax fans feel the older FA lenses are amazing I think you will be very surprised at reduced performance if they release a FF camera with 36-42mp. Remember on apsc you only use the centre; so if corners look like even a remote degrading the corners on FF will be serious lacking. Just look in comparison to how far behind the film era Canon and Nikon lenses were compared to what is out there today. Do we really think the Pentax was 3 times as good as Canon and Nikon in that era?
The offset is big sharpness is often not what you want when photographing people, etc. I don't want to count the pores on Joe Bob's face. I want smooth rendering and great transition to out of focus with nice bokeh. I would say this new lens is more oriented to landscape yielding class leading sharpness stopped down compared to other zooms and still life images at wide aperture. Have to wait and see. If it doesn't offer sharpness compared to the top primes it will be a flop...
Now the other question you have to ask is we love to think and imagine about printing large; but, how many 4ft prints can you fit in a house and do you want them overwhelming everything else taking attention away from furniture and architecture? Do we need anything more than 24mp? And with those large prints how often do you want to get close enough to assess the sharpness; getting that close you can't visualise and take in the whole picture. I sure don't want a 4 ft picture of Aunt Betty showing the details of every wrinkle and that little makeup mistake over my fireplace. 8x10 in the stairway is fine with me.
Battery life, battery life, battery life. Going small means making smaller batteries. Going to EVF and Live View means more juice required. Result is piss poor battery life. The size is soon lost by having to carry 10 batteries and a charger.

I don't see it as an issue just that Sigma isn't interested in the K mount at this time. If Pentax walked up and said we want to use your designs to save us the R&D and tooling just packaged up in a Pentax barrel and the Pentax AF designs they would. Pentax has done it before with other third party lens makers designs. If the cost is right for both and it frees up Pentax to work on the body it is a no brainer.

In response to the bigger is better discussions. This is a response to the movement to high mp cameras like the 36, 42, 51mp FF dslr offerings. Trying to keep up with lenses that resolve to these sensors the size of lenses are moving into the medium format realm (and some have in terms of cost too like the Zeiss Otus line). I also see this as Sigma's response to designing a lens to match the superb ground breaking resolution of their 24 and 35mm Art lenses with an equivalent zoom so you don't have to pay $1800 for a pair and still have to swap them out all the time. A high zoom range is a compromise to lower sharpness gaining utility. Why buy a 51mp dslr if your pictures only look like 24mp because of the lens limitations...

Is it that or is it that people have just finally figured out that their camera is good enough for everything they need and that new model with a bit more pixels or fancy feature isn't worth the cost of a new camera. I remember back to film when a body was good to fill your needs for 10yrs. In the last 5-7yrs camera manufactures have been working the consumerism and new and improved features angle to make sales more than ever before. My guess is that sales are falling back to a steady sustaining pace now that each improvement is a small incremental bump. Whoever can become the lowest cost producer will be the sustaining leader. Only big serious features like sensor tilt and shift on a K3 style body that turns every FF lens into a tilt shift lens or automatic focus bracketing, etc kind of features would stand out as huge benefits in new cameras. Not little step changes and trying to convince buyers that they have to have the next model with 55 focus points instead of 50 in their current...
Look at the new 51mp Canon; there are maybe 5 lenses out there that can perform to that level of resolution and 3 of them are manual focus and sell in the price realm of medium format lenses the others are specialised lenses like the 300 and 400mm 2.8's and then only stopped down to 6.3. Not a overly usable or cost efficient system to get the benefits of higher mp at the cost of lower dynamic range...
But they seriously need to solve the battery life issues. Adding a grip to a A7 to get any kind of battery life total defeats the compactness. It seems to be a combination of the power draw from the sensor/screen/evf and making tiny batteries to keep the camera body small. That and using an adapter to use half the higher quality lenses is bloody stupid. Every adapter has a tiny bit of extra weakness and slop. So what if your lenses are designed for longer registration distances; there is no reason you can't just make the solid barrel longer to make up for the shorter distance and push the glass a bit deeper into the barrel... I mean how hard is it to do that? What like an extra $2 in materials? There is still a lot of clean up to do in the mirror less realm that will be occurring over the next while to turn it into a system that melds together rather than chopped up and squished into something to get a camera to market fast before the other guy...
I just look back to the Pentax 645D when it came out and while it was a great groundbreaking camera for the price it was offered at they took way to many short cuts and kept many of them with the 645Z still even. To say you have x number of AF points when everybody else only had one then turn around and show that they are all in the centre because you hacked in the apsc line AF into a medium format frame is absurd. Or to totally miss the ball on teathering (which is moot for most but a deal breaker to those that need it). Or not be able to meet the dates you set on modern lens design published in roadmaps. All of these are things Pentax needs to spend significant focus on when bring out a full frame. The best thing they could do would be to partner with Sigma on lenses who is doing an outstanding job recently; producing many lenses outperforming Nikon and Canons own. That lets them focus on all the details of the camera body so it comes out right the first time and is this ground breaking yet still traditional enough to draw in sales.
What about touch screen top and rear LCDs but keeping all the dials and functions for quick shutter speed changes, etc. Phase One just did it. It is traditional in since of dslr's but still ground breaking new. Or interchangeable viewfinders; traditional to film but ground breaking to dslrs. Use the 51mp CMOS 645 sensor so one can decide after the shot to go vertical or landscape without any loss; yes there is waisted pixels in the corners and it would make a round picture but you could crop square out of it taking the corners right to the edge of the circle, or choose portrait or landscape, or fix a crooked horizon, etc. Lots of thoughts out their to make a more photographers camera than a engineers camera. Pentax has a good history of thinking about the photographer in their designs...

If you're serious about needing to handhold and want to push shutter speed lower consider a Kenyon Labs gyro. It is image and camera stabilisation. I have one that I bought primarily for sunrise/sunset aerial photography (handheld from planes and helicopters). However, I have used it handheld on the ground more than I thought I would; two of my favourite desert elephant photos were taken with the 300mm handheld on foot using it. Such an often overlooked but incredible tool; consider it like investing in an excellent tripod and head timeless tools that do not loose function as cameras come and go. Of course they are a pain to carry around unless you set out with a specific focus.

For sale is my Pentax 645 A* 600mm f5.6.
Lens includes:- Front 128mm Pentax protective filter
- Really Right Stuff lens plate
- RARE drop in circular polariser with case and cloth
- Pentax 1.4x teleconverter
Glass is in excellent condition. Lens body is in good condition, no dents but does have minor rub marks and scratches to the paint. Focus is smooth and limiter functions as it should. Works flawlessly on my 645D and has delivered many amazing photos. The telephoto lens on a medium format body whether film or digital produces a look that can't be matched by smaller formats. However, with a 645 to K adapter (or even to a Nikon or Canon mount for that matter) would produce great results; would be a fine compliment to that FF 35mm body when it arrives.
This lens model is one of the best examples of Pentax's devotion to professional outdoor photography with medium format; an absolutely legendary lens. The ergonomics of the lens are outstanding from the top handle, to the smooth focusing, the detail of the double extending/collapsing built in lens hood. The drop in circular polariser is a absolute must which is a superb aid to contrast when deal with glarey conditions such as deserts or rock landscapes. While the lens takes some practice to gain full performance from it specifically on moving wildlife; when it works out you will be in love and in awe.
I am sad to sell it as I will regret it someday. But my photographic subject material has changed since. Recently and in the near to mid future I don''t foresee much wildlife or telephoto landscapes. As a result I am selling it for somebody else to get use out of it and so I can apply the funds onto other projects.
I also can offer up my Really Right Stuff series 4 carbon finer tripod (TVC43) with Arca Swiss B2 head. This is an absolutely fabulous tripod and head to use with the lens. The tripod is incredibly sturdy and vibration free; extends to 63" or down to ground level and very lightweight for the size. I sold my Gitzo to upgrade to this. Really Right Stuff has put significant thought from an ergonomics and reliability standard producing some of the finest tripods. The ball head has an extremely high load rating insuring trouble free use and excellent vibration control and stability. The key to a great tripod on long lenses is insuring the load capacity for exceeds what weight you will place on it. The B2 is a double ball head; that is each direction of movement is controlled by its own knob. You can roll without pitch or yaw; you can pitch and roll without yaw, etc. Tripod includes a fantastic designed Really Right Stuff bag.
If purchasing the tripod with the lens I can offer you an excellent package deal. Tripod cost would be $1599 when combined. I will only sell the tripod separately after the lens has sold.

Completely depends on your use. If you are vehicle based and use a tripod or bean bag then the FA* f4 is the best option; if you don't need AF and the left fits your use then get the A*. If you carry it around; fly with all your gear; are on a tight budget then the 5.6 is for you. At f6.7 I can't tell the difference much. Remember at f4 the dof is very small; just the nature of medium format. Stay away from the 150-300mm, it is better at the 150mm end.
Owned all three: FA 300 5.6, FA* 300mm 4.0, FA 150-300mm 5.6. Only use the prime 5.6 now. Never found great use at 4.0 end as the depth of field was always too small; hince I use the remarkably light 5.6.

Well there you go so a 220 holder should be worth the same as 120 but they don't sell that way (averaging $10-$15 less). So if you need spare spare film holders buy 220...

I agree. With the 645Z out again the 75mm may be worth a bit more (in the $300 range). A year ago you could pick one up for $150. The market of used 645 lenses has really shot up again as supply is not what it was since all the new 645Z owners consumed everything.
The price the OP lists from Adorama is the new price so hard to compare... The price of the 645N is somewhat based on what film holders does it have, base brice around $300. 220 is fairly hard to find now and makes the film holder kinda worthless where you will need to source a 120 to use it (going for $30-$50). So $350 on the 645N would be fair price if it has a couple 120 holders.
My experience watching the market and wishing I had bought a second A 35mm a year ago...
So fairly reasonable price today. A year ago I would have said it was too high since the lens. Condition doesn't seem to have too big an impact on the price of the body. People with immaculate condition ask more but you rarely see them sell... Condition on the lens will fluctuate the price considerably though.

And? Any details? Is the hood removable for filters on the front? I am guessing the rest is about what I would expect: mild correctable distortion, a bit of correctable CA wide open, great centre sharpness falling off slightly at the edges at 28mm and pretty even all across at 45...
You can't leave us hanging like that; it isn't right.

I had one of these that I thought might be useful when I did aerial photography work with the 645D. Ended up not liking it because the balance was all off and holding was harder than just a hand on the bottom of the gyro. But you could easily do something like this. I had mine modified to not use the clamp and bolt sratight on as the main arcs tripod plate. It was a good thought since I had the extra hold and still had a bottom arcs plate but again it didn't feel right.
