Will this telecoverter work?

Thanks baro-nite for the extra info and I look forward to the PM. KEH has some miscellaneous brand converters listed, however, not much in the way of details and would be ordering somewhat blind. They are listed at $4-6 dollars so may take the risk on one to practice taking apart.

No contacts and has bayonet mount. There is an aperature lever. The glass appears to be mounted as a solid piece. Other than Richoh and JC Penny, what other makes should I keep an eye out for? I have a few M prime lenses but would prefer to learn with the A's I have available. Extension tube sets would be ideal, but again not sure as to which ones to keep a look out for. The macro setup that I currently have includes K-7, 50mm 2.8mm A Pentax macro, 35mm macro of unknown origin with aperature available, manfrotto tripod and rails of unknown origin. The set up seems to need just a little more reach every now and again.

Thanks for your responses and links.

Why are my photos blue?

No, not auto WB. A quick look into the WB settings showed the camera set in tungsten. Since purchasing the camera I have played with or changed very few menu settings. Have put, as of the zoo trip, all my lenses on the K-7. Now that does not mean I have not changed something in passing on exterior buttons and wheels. I am trying to get some workable basics down and trying to make a lens kit decision as I leave for vacation in Colorado soon. Would not like to have all those wonderful scenes come out blue, especially after making arrangements to borrow a DA12-24 for the trip.

All was fine until this trip. Used DA(L) 35mm, A 50/2.0, Sears 75-300mm and DA 18-55 WR prior to this outdoors. The only reason why I may not have had any problems prior to this is the fact nothing in the frame was yellow or indoors. The zoo exhibits were all a yellow/tan, niece in yellow dress and flowers a strong yellow. Any of the photos not containing yellow or purple while using the A 50 macro came out fine (3/16 photos). Have not used RAW yet as hard to process when on road for work six out of seven and only carry an iPad for personal use. May switch to RAW + JPEG until such time as I can get more time at home with the desk top (plenty of cards on hand). Also, will watch those settings a little more closely at start up and different lighting situations. Thanks to all.

Magic Lantern Book

I purchased a Magic Lantern Guide for the K-7 and have found it useful for explaining terms and functions better than the users manual. However, several wise forum members offered the best resource advice for learning your camera. Just go out and shoot, evaluate results, tweak settings, and shoot some more. Also, posting questions here and reading of others expeirences has been most helpful. I have taken to carrying a small notebook in my bag to record thoughts and changes made on the fly. I find it helpful to also record what worked where and to have a ready resource on hand. My sister-in-law uses a list/notes function on her iPhone. Remember, the best way to learn something is to just go out and do it.

Will run a couple through PP and see what comes out. Thanks for reminding me that all is not lost. This instance puts into mind that it may be time to move onto investigating just what some of the menu functions entail and move forward in the learning curve. Also, maybe another trip into the manual. Thanks.

Yes I did forget. However, did not reset from original factory settings and got great results at my nephews baseball games over the past several weeks. I will try to take the same two lenses out on Monday and set to daylight. Thanks for the quick response.

Took K-7 to zoo today with Camberon 28-200/4.0-5.6 and Pentax A 50/2.8 macro and got blue images. Have not changed settings in camera menu that I am aware of. Only settings have been for shutter priority and to set ISO to 200-800. no filters or hoods used as the hoods did not make it into the bag as going to the zoo last minute decision and these two were lenses I have not played with yet on the camera. I have gotten excellent photos in other situations with several other manual and auto lenses. Thanks in advance for your time and advice.

P.S. Will try to post photo as soon as I can get to home computer.

What was your very first camera?

First to ever use was some 110 instamatic

First big camera was father's Yashica that had reels for different film sizes. Took it in to college photography class and got good results alongside my own first camera, the K1000, a gift for high school graduation. I now own three K1000's.

First DSLR is the K7.

Didn't get to zoo for first day out. Nephews soccer game instead with the DA 18-55WR. Lens did not have as much reach as I would have liked. The boys were not fast (6-7 year olds) and the K7 and I kept up pretty well. Having not shot a sporting event before, I saw a great advantage in having AF capabilities. However, did get a few keepers and even some that I would proudly hand over copies to other parents. I ended up in shutter priority on a overcast day. Some minor first hand attempts at PP. Overall pretty pleased as only one in about fifty is not fixable (very over exposed). The one was set in TAv and the exposure was WAY OFF. Hope to play again today at various family Easter events. Will post a few results once I look up the procedure and learn yet another skill.

My new K7 arrived late Thursday and had to wait for battery to charge overnight. Played with it a little on Friday. Buttons and looking into menus mostly with the manual and Magic Lantern Guide out. Put the DA35 on to try out AF as this is relatively new to me. Not really sure about it. Think I may prefer MF. Hope to take the camera out for a real spin today at the zoo or in the backyard. Maybe get some keepers from Easter Sunday. Will have one K1000 setup as backup though as I don't want to miss recording my niece's first Easter.

The question I have is what mode to start with. I am thinking P with minor custom menu adjustments to get started (auto EV comp on, custom image mode and auto WB for example) or TAv. Another option is to try a few shots in each Mode with no menu changes. Choose which I like for various situations and then change settings as needed to get the image I want. A big step up from the K1000. Also, as I remember from learning with the K1000 over all these years, shoot, shoot and shoot some more. Any suggestions, prior experiences, or personal tales welcome from your learning curve experience. THANKS!!

Recently went from four K1000 bodies to three. The fourth sacrificed in car accident. Miss it terribly. The K1000 was my first manual and will probably use them as long as I can find film. It is nice to see that there are still lots of film users in the world.

Decision taken out of hands. Family members purchased K7 with kit lens and 35 for graduation gift. I think i will look into a few good lenses to purchase after playing around with the 35 and kit lens. Will set aside personal budget left over to purchase K5 when cost comes down. I like having a two camera kit and the compatibility of the 7&5 accessories seems the way to go later on. Now just need to start that steep learning curve. Thanks for all the advice and comments from all and be sure there are more questions to come. VERY GLAD I found this forum.

Whoops, I think a little fearful voice in my mind is worried about the not so techno savvy part. All are good cameras and have their merits. I need to find the fit that is best for me and learn to use it well. Everyones comments have been appreciated, but still more would be most welcome and appreciated.

eddie1960, Thanks for the mention of the albums in the forum. Your photos provided insight as to what the K-7 is capable of in the hands of someone in the real world. I think I may take a journey into other albums as well. Possibly a further journey into flicker and similar sites to get more examples. Why didn't I think of that?

On the technical side of this decision I have noted the following:
A) K-5: better performer with all kinds of bells and whistles
B) K-r: no HyP/HyM/X, the prescence of scene modes on dial that restricts or does not allow for adjustment, one lens adjustment, no power zoom, 16 segment metering, and no progamable user
setting.
C) K-7: Suggested poorer ISO performance, no separate ISO NR
D) 20D: slower shutter speed, slower fps, no shadow DR, 16 segment metering, no HDR, no separate ISO NR

On the personal side is the fit to hand of the K5/7, the availability of grip for three of the four, the cost of body and two starter lenses for under $1200 with K -7/r/20, available warranties for all, weather sealed/durable bodies on three, and all have features that I see myself using. The question seems to be more as to what features can I do without, what do I really need technically for my shooting style.

I went into Arlington over the weekend. Only store within hour drive that sells pentax. The Kr felt ok but would be even better if it had a grip available. The K-7 felt very much lighter than the K1000 and also very familiar. Tried K-7 with grip and felt even more at home. The K-5 body is the same as I understand it. They did not have any used K20's so can't compare. I did research the pin problem on the two zooms and both have the mentioned pin. Not a deal breaker. Let's me look into more glass as the skills develop. I would like to keep one manual and digital kit ready to just pick up and go.

I had totally forgotten about free trails for PP. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks so much for all the info. Have not made final decision and continue to weigh the input so generously given.

The film at the time was kodak 100 and 200 color film and in Carlsbad Caverns in NM about twenty years ago. I just used the available feature lights, bulb and timer on a tripod. I believe that was with my first K1000 with the kit 50mm. Others include cave tours in Alabama, Tennessee, Florida and Georgia. Later 800 films. The most used are the primes. They always seem to be on one of the bodies. The usual kit was one body set for color and the second for black and white. Usually with whatever film i could afford at the time. Once a student, forever a student it seems. The zooms for general walk around and ballon festivals and macro experimentation. I am looking at ultra wide later on and a good 65 or 100 macro as those both offer something new and interesting.

Can you purchase a used item from one seller/retailer and purchase an extended used warranty from another who offers it while the first does not? Thanks.

The 35mm is the DA(L). The motivation is having learned first with a prime with the K1000 and taking that experience with my first foray into digital. The lens choices were made with thoughts of not immediately going to the manual lenses I currently have. Looking through a PDF down load of the users manual I think that starting to learn the functions and operation of the camera are a priority. The artistic will come with practice and skill attained from the basics. Better glass as I can afford and improved skill. It is the acquiring of the skills needed for digital that has me most concerned. I like the control two wheels present and fear that having to go into a menu for settings would be a little offsetting. I am not what you call techno savvy. However, once I learn something I tend to be quite proficient. The learning curve tends to be extremely steep. Basics then artistic as my photo instructor of the 80's always said.

High iso would only be a concern for museums or aquariums when traveling or school trips with the niece and nephew. Also, maybe some cave visits. I have never used a flash in previous situations and have loved the challenge of getting a quality shoot in less then ideal situations. Little post processing experience with computer. Still process own film when time and opportunity permit.

With 3 what about replacing the 18-55mm for the DA 18-135 as my budget could be stretched a little if the body price is right.

I have been shooting with K1000's for over twenty years and only used a P&S for lab documentation while in school. The last six months has seen a lot of on line research into bodies and systems. The choice has come down to the K-r and K-7 for Pentax. Have even tossed around the idea of a used K20D as the filters, in camera processing and video of the other two are nice but not necessarily high on my requirement list. Most of my photography is landscape and travel oriented. Some portraiture and architecture get thrown in on rare occasions. I have seen posts in this and other forums concerning focusing issues with the K-r and most recommend the K-5 over the K-7. As to the option of purchasing a used K20D to get my feet wet, there is little advice to be found. Budget is a constraint and these are the three options I have so far considered:

1. K-7 with DA 35mm and 18-55mm WR
2. K-r with same lenses.
3. 20d again with same lenses.

Advice, pro/cons and comments greatly appreciated.

Pentax kit items from SLR include: 3 K1000 bodies; Pentax 50mm/1.2, 50mm/1.4, 50mm macro (all M); Maker unknown 28mm/2.8 auto; Albinar 35-70mm/3.5-4.8 auto zoom macro; Sears for Pentax 60-300mm/4.0-5.6 auto zoom macro; Soliger 28-80mm/3.5-4.5 zoom macro; Cambron(?) 28-200mm/4-5.6 auto zoom macro.

Unsure about digital

I have three K1000's and assorted hand- me-down lenses. Love to process own film when I can afford space rental or can squeeze into unused classroom. The forum has answered many of the questions I have encountered in six months of digital system research. The nearest Pentax retailer is an hour away and not very helpful as they push towards other systems. I am leaning towards the K7 and Kr, but have not ruled out a used K20 to get my feet wet. There is one canon in the choice mix as well. Would love to keep my oldies but goodies out of the closet. Thanks for all the info you as a community have already given.

I have been shooting with three K1000 bodies and an assortment of hand-me-down lenses for over 20 years. I love these oldies. However, good film and quality processing (other than my own) is becoming harder to find. I have been researching systems for over six months and have narrowed the choice to Pentax and one other. Both have cameras that feel good in hand. I would prefer the Pentax K5, but looking into the K7, K20 and Kr (budget) as to keep the oldies alive. I am hoping the forum community can help provide the advice and answers needed as the closest retailer for Pentax is an hour away and their staff pushes other systems heavily and do not seem well informed. Sincere Thanks in advance.
