any word on how long the new repair center is taking to do their "fix"?
I have two K-3's that have both done the run away shutter issue, upgraded the firmware but i want to send them in before i run out of warranty.

Wish i could post that i didn't have the problem. But i bought 2 new K3's a few months ago, first one went crazy at about 10,000 clicks. Switched to the second one to add some clicks to it and it just went crazy on me friday.. 0 for 2 here. I'm thinking its a bigger issue than we think, and it might not be a matter of "if it's going to happen" it's going to be a "when it's going to happen"

Well, now i can officially say both of my new K3's have the run away (Flapping) mirror issue. So add two more cameras to the list. First body did it when i had a battery grip on and two batteries in. It took me a minute to get the grip off and the battery out of the body. I switched to using the second body as my primary while i waited for a chance where i could send off the first body. Friday night the second body did it. Since the first time, i haven't been keeping a battery in the body, just the grip, so i stopped it real quick by releasing the battery.
Looks like both my cameras need to go into repair.... I'm not very happy about being a beta tester with the new cameras, and having to waste my time sending them in for a "fix" that may or may not fix the problem.

I nominate this image: composition, contrast and lighting just work with this shot. As stated above, it's a very powerful image! Great job. And on a side note, It shows that a 7 year old K10D can still hang in there.... It's not the camera it's the photographer.

I ended up shooting most the night on AF-C with the 9-point zone. I'll have to try it with SR on and OFF this week. The lighting at the track is far from good, so i don't think any of the other cameras would do any better. Depending on where i was standing in the track i had a chance to work the different types of tracking. side to side tracking (it did good) / tracking coming at the camera or away from (did ok) / and tracking with both side to side and coming at me (did ok)
The AF was doing great when the sun was still out, but when it got dark it would not update as fast. Sometimes it wouldn't even adjust even though the car was coming at me and i know the focus point was changing. I switch to using back button focusing so i could hold that down and not worry about the 1/2 press of the shutter button to update focus.
I'll be trying out different things this week..
I don't think it's a flaw of the camera, i think it's just too much for the AF system

Well, i got the chance to break-in one of the bodies at the track on friday. Put about 1300 shots on it that night with no real problems. Had a chance to play around with some setting and really torture test the autofocus system. I did find that i miss my backordered battery grip, and my hand was cramped up big time by the end of the night. (glad i wasn't shooting the 70-200 2.8)
Here's two shots from 400 iso to 3200 iso (i use flash when it gets dark, so i was just playing with the 3200)

Is the camera the answer everything... nope.... but it sure does blow away the K20D i was using. I can't wait to get these in my studio with some prime lenses!

Dan,
I have it set very basic to start, relying on how i have been shooting with the K20D (center point AF, AF-C/AF-S, Shake reduction on). As i get get shooting at the track i'll try a new feature for a few laps and leave it or go back to the basics. It's pretty fast pace at the track, so there isn't that much time to "play with settings" I don't think i'm going to push much past 1600 ISO tonight, but as i said, on a yellow flag i might crank it up to 6400 to see how it does, but back down to 1600 when the action starts back up. I'm also going to shoot raw+ to see if i can get by with jpg only (which i could do on the K20D without regretting it) One of the good things with the track i shoot at is they race at night, so I shoot most the shots with flash. That helps with stopping the action and keeps the noise down. But if i can crank up the ISO, it's just less that my flash has to work.
I really have to get used to the electronic controls as i am used to just flipping a switch or going into the Fn screen.

They have arrived! Had a little bit of time last night to get them all setup the way i wanted and get familiar with the new OS and layout.
Time to jump in head first tonight and put about a thousand shots on one of the lucky bodies. I'm the track photographer out at a local dirt track, so i will be testing and working at the same time. I do have my K20D in the bag if something goes wrong, but i'm crossing my fingers that i'll be falling in love with the K3 tonight.

I've never been a photographer to rely on high iso, most of the time i would just bring the light that i needed. I do alot of studio and off camera flash work. Sure there were a few cases i couldn't bring light, but i would shy away from those types of shoots. It'll be nice to jump up to the next level where i can push myself to accept more low light shoots.
Here's one were i was pushing past my ISO comfort level on the K20d. This was shot at 1100 iso.

So, I took the jump and have two new K3's on their way to me. I'm upgrading from a K20d and a K10d backup.. Yes, i know i missed a few versions, but those two bodies did everything i needed them to do for the past few years.
I've been reading up on here about the K3 and you all have me a little worried with this shutter flap issue and noise at higher iso's.
What do you all think, coming from a K20d.... will i be happy with the K3? And for the noise... I don't push my camera much on ISO... I use 800 sometimes and a few times i bumped it to 1600. I'm not expecting night vision but i do run in to cases where i can use the extra ISO.. What do most of you feel comfortable shooting for your highest ISO?

I shoot full manual mode.
I've also been known to hit 200mm on my zoom, but i like standing back out of the way and using my lens to get close.
Here's where I'd start.
Mode: Manual
ISO: 400
White Balance: Auto
Aperture: Wide open (smallest number you can get)
Shutter: fastest you can get without underexposing.
note: if shutter speed is too slow, bump ISO to 800
you can also play with manual white balance. find something white on the stage click on the adjust and focus on that white object. (sometimes the colored can lights freak out the sensor)

that is a good idea. heck it doesn't even have to be pentax users. i have a few friends using other cameras. it would just be good to get together with other photographers and snap off some shots.

Hey Sprags..
I've been shooting live music for a good 10 years now. Now, you won't hear me calling myself a pro or anything, but i think i've found a style. I've found live music / bar photography with out using flash is one of the hardest things to shoot. But, when you do get that one shot to turn out.. it's all worth it.
Here's some examples of my work:

Some tips I can offer you.
Take alot of pictures, the more you take the better. Not every picture will turn out, heck not even half of them will (at least for me). with all the changing lights and movement you can only hope to catch them without blur.
Fast glass, the faster the better. The more light you can get to your sensor the better.
It helps to know people. (or meet people) if you know the sound/light guy. ask him if he can bump up the front light on the stage or remove some colored filters to get more light. If you don't know the sound/light guy.. introduce yourself, tell him what your doing and ask him if he could help you out. It never hurts to ask.
Stay out of the way. (this is more of a personal tip for me) People came/paid to watch a concert, not you taking pictures of the band. Just because you have a camera doesn't mean you deserve to be in the front row. (at least to the fans it doesn't) If you need to step in front of someone, excuse your self, say you'll be there for just an second and move on.
now for the settings part.
this is what i catch myself using, and might not work for you or your show, but will be a starting point.
ISO: depending on the light (if it looks bright try 200 or 400, if not push 800. but, i wouldn't go over that unless you like the noise from the higher ISOs) Your main goal is to get to a shutter speed you can live with.
Aperture: I normally stay wide open. If you have a 2.8 lens start there. If the depth of field is too shallow for you, close it up a little. keep in mind, your main goal is shutter speed.
shutter speed: as fast as you can get. which in the dark isn't that fast. I've been known to shoot 1/15, 1/20, 1/30 sec shutter speeds. But, i'm comfortable hand holding that slow of a shutter. I also typically underexpose just a little and bring out the light in post processing.
Last thing.. Just have fun.

There's a trick i found on the web that worked with my point & shoot. If you don't want a flash flickering or want to purchase a flash just to assist the auto focus, try a cheap simple key chain laser pointer. (keeping it out of the eyes of any subject of course) put the red dot on your subject and focus on the red dot. I've tested this with my point and shoot that had a hard time locking focus in the dark, and it worked great. I have yet to test it with my Pentax but i thought i'd put it out there for people to try.

I actually just got a DL about 8 months ago and i love it. Also just got a Samsung Gx-1s for a back up. (yes, a newer version for a backup) The DL does everything i need it to do and more.
but if you want to compare them side by side, only you can decide what it a pro or con.
I like the larger screen, the 3 point focus doesn't bother me & the SD card it fine.
from what i can see that is the major differences with them.

one thing you didn't mention that could sway your decision is price. are all of these the same price? and is that what you're willing to pay for the camera.

The quick, down and dirty way to do it in photoshop is to create two layers, 1 color 1 B&W.
The color layer will be behind the B&W layer. Erase anything you want color from the B&W layer. Done! I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but for this picture it would work great.
for this picture i think i would leave the eyes, green & yellow things in the hair & their lips color. and maybe even play with the eye shadow.
