Autofocus motor problems for DA* 16-50

The lens has been nothing but superb for me, other than this issue. Now I do think a $1000 lens shouldn't have this sort of problems, but I've loved being able to use it in weather conditions that had other photographers scurrying for their bags.

I totally forgot about KEH. They look to be a little more expensive, but if they can do the job better? Do you know if they are replacing the old SDM motors with new ones at Precision Camera?

Autofocus motor problems for DA* 16-50

I'm having issues getting my lens to autofocus on my K3. No other lens has issues. Has the repair place gotten better? I know a few years ago when it moved away from CRIS people were having lots of issues. Unfortunately, I don't think I can wait anymore. It's gone from sometimes failing to usually failing.

FA Limited Lenses in Weather?

I'd be concerned about using the 31 in weather. I could see water getting in where the floating front element moves back and forth. I think the 43 and 77 would be fine if you took care.

The problem seems to be with the DA* 16-50. Other lenses don't have that issue.

I'll try to clean the mount contacts. I'll also try a different lens tonight. The camera doesn't even try to autofocus - it just shoots a picture. very strange...

Hello all, my new K-3 won't autofocus sometimes on start up. The workaround seems to be to flip the af - manual switch, but that seems strange. It will take pictures - just no focus. The only lens I have used so far is my DA* 16-50, which works wonderfully on my K-5.

You might get a paperweight. I'd not buy it, especially for that price.

Camera bodies should be treated as disposable. Advancing technology means they won't perform as well as current bodies probably fairly quickly. Even the shutter will wear out, and will need replaced eventually. It is true there might be better lens designs in the future, but a good lens will last you a lifetime.

Looks great. The features look good. I am not so sure I like the mode dial change. I do not like the lack of weather sealing. That will make it hard to sell to a friend who was considering a K-50 just because it was sealed.

I'd wager the seller bought them at the bankruptcy auction, and probably has made their money back. Still, its a really good deal. Thank you for posting it! Its a great small camera bag. I'm using it for when I take one lens + camera, and the grip even fits while attached to the camera.

Lens storage.... how do YOU do it?

I use a Pelican case with silica gel for the infrequently used ones. The frequently used ones are in my camera cases. I have a large case when I need to use one of my longer lenses and a small one that carries usually 16-50, 31, and 43 + camera.

Difference between DA and DA-L for 55-300mm

Quick shift is not important in my opinion. The mount is also very durable. It probably will not last as long as a metal lens, but you should ask yourself if it is worth it. What you will miss is the lens hood. You should definitely get one if you buy a DA-L, which does not have a hood included. It could be a knock off from ebay or the genuine Pentax one - just buy one. It's a cheap way to increase contrast and will definitely make your pictures better.

What I forgot to mention is the HD DA one is water resistant, which might be important to you or it may not be. I think that one goes for more though.

Shoot stuff with lots of contrast. That's where it really shines. My favorite picture with it is of a gazebo surrounded by flowers of many colors on a overcast day. It came out wonderfully.

Lens bath against fungus

Probably the best thing to do would be to seal it in a watertight case with some silica gel. You will still need to clean the elements, but it should starve the fungus of its needed moisture.

It's a good lens. I've been happy with mine. The only complaint I would add is its not as flare resistant as other Pentax lenses.

1st universal prime lens for a little of city photography

The specs on the two lenses are exactly the same - same min focusing distance, same magnification, same number of elements and groups. They are the same optical formula. The only possible difference would be coatings.

What you pay for in the Limited is the quick shift mechanism, metal body, the metal lens hood, and the metal lens cap. The XS is all plastic, has no quick shift, has no lens hood, and a rubber lens cap. Also the rear cap is the cheaper push on kind that comes with the DA-L lenses instead of the nicer twist lock kind that comes with almost all Pentax lenses.

I agree about the FA 43. What I really like about it is its contrast. The shots with it seem to have more character.

1st universal prime lens for a little of city photography

The 40 XS is my loudest autofocusing lens by far. The 40 Limited is considerably quieter. I don't think it will scare people, but the idea with street photography is to be unobtrusive. Unless the environment is loud or you are very far away, people will notice that lens autofocusing.

The problem with DXOMark is their testing is very affected by sample variation. They only test one lens, so if there are differences between individual lenses, a really bad copy or a really good copy will throw off their results quite a bit. We know from various patent filings that the 40XS and 40 Limited share the exact optical formula. The same pieces of glass are in each lens and in the same place. They also likely use the same coatings (the SMC 40 Limited and the 40 XS), though that is harder to confirm. The only optical difference I know of is the presence of a lens hood on the 40 Limited, which does add contrast definitely, but you could add a lens hood to the 40 XS and get the same effect. Also, my experience with this lens is that it is already extremely flare resistant - a hood doesn't make much difference. I stand by what I said - they are identical and should perform the same. If they don't either you got a really good lens and you should be happy, or you got a bad copy and should return it or service it.

I own both the 40 XS and 40 Limited. Image quality is exactly the same. What isn't the same is what it sounds like focusing. The XS sounds like a torture machine when it is focusing. It is very loud, and I would think it would give you away for street photography. Also, the 40 Limited has quick shift, which I could see being useful.
