New lens for zoom (K-x)?

Thank you, victordeamorin! That was the confirmation I needed to go for the cheaper 50-200mm (: If the difference in IQ isn't TOO great, I think I can just start out with this cheaper lens and maybe upgrade later on if photography becomes a more serious thing. & If I don't, then the 50-200mm should be fine for my needs for awhile, from what I am reading on the forums!

I will probably get it early tomorrow and use it all day on my birthday adventures and see how I like it! (:

Thank you everyone!

When you say you saw better IQ, do you mean like blatantly obvious differences in IQ or do you mean when you zoom in during the post process?

Honestly, this is a birthday present that my boyfriend is trying to get me (he's even more lost on this whole lens buying thing than I am, haha.) He's willing to spend the money on the lens but I'm not exactly that comfortable letting him spend almost $400 just for my birthday. On the other hand, I don't want to get a used one and have it die on me 3 months later, I would feel so bad for wasting his money. ): Which is why I have now gone from seriously considering 55-300mm to 50-200mm.

I don't plan on doing anything too crazy in photography, just simple shots when I go out and enjoy nature once in awhile. Like trips to the Golden Gate Park or Japanese Tea Gardens, museums, aquariums, cars, people, wildlife but it doesn't have to be pro like chasing after seagulls. Sunsets, the cityscape at night. If I do seriously go into wildlife photography (which isn't impossible), I expect it to be a good 5-10 years from now considering how busy I am with school work ):

Aside from the zoom, the sharpness and contrast of colors BEFORE editing is also important for me. I think that's as far as my knowledge of photography goes );

To everyone suggesting the 55-300mm especially, can I get your opinions on why not the 50-200mm? I've read a lot on the two and there's back and forth disagreement on the IQ. Some people say that IQ difference is very small between the two although 55-300mm IS better "by a little". Some people say that there is a big difference in the IQ. Opinions please? (:

Okay I will look into the Pentax F 70-210/4-5.6. Thanks for the suggestion!! (:

So the only differences between the two are really just the quickshift and the hood? So much more expensive for small differences.. ):

Thank you everyone for the tips/recommendations!
I have been looking at the options and have pretty much ruled out the Tamron and Sigma that I had originally been looking at. I'm still doing my research with ~10 tabs open in my browser!

So far, I have yet to find a DA 55-300mm for less than $360, does anyone know of any good places to buy new lenses with good deals? Or a trustworthy used seller?
Amazon.com: Pentax DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR Cameras: Camera & Photo
Pentax SMCP-DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED Autofocus Lens 21720 B&H

Current thoughts:
- Is the DA-L harder to use than the DA? Why is a hood necessary for the DA-L?
- What does the part about the quick shift mean?
- Have not completely ruled out the FA 100-300 f/4.7-5.

As a beginner, I was hoping to stick with the simpler options and work my way up from there. Hope that makes sense!

I actually kinda am on a budget. ): I will still really take "paying twice" into consideration though.

Also, didn't you say the DA was heavier? Is it heavier or bigger than the Tamron/Sigma? I'm trying to keep things light, without sacrificing too much of course (:

No you didn't create more confusion! I just didn't understand why the 18-250mm had more zoom. Would a 18-250mm be a better selection than a 70-300mm lens if zoom is most important thing for me at the moment?

That sounds perfect! I used to do a lot of photo editing and web designing so the post process is really never a problem for me. Point for Tamron! (:

Thank you for the detailed feedback! I feel like I should have mentioned that I don't have actual plans on being anything more than a hobbyist in photography. As a college student studying to be a nurse, I find that I don't have enough time as it is. Would this change your suggestion of the DA lens? I do enjoy photography A LOT. And I love being artsy haha! (: But.. Asian parents.. y'know? Thank you especially for the tip on not buying anything longer than a 300mm if I don't want to use a tripod. I am not ready! So I will definitely be keeping the lens under 300mm. If only I knew what these numbers mean.. What is the difference between a 250mm and a 300mm in the zoom?

Oh, where would be an example of a place to get such a lens? I just took a quick look at a search of this particular lens and all I got were some forum discussions. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hello!

I'm new to using DSLRs, and I was thinking about getting a new lens in a few days. I've had my k-x for over a year now and have decided that I want some sort of telephoto (maybe?) lens so I can zoom in on stuff far away. I know absolutely NOTHING about lenses or what the numbers mean. Any help/suggestion is greatly appreciated! My biggest problem with the lens that came with the K-X kit was always that I couldn't take a picture of anything far away. I felt that my pictures were too crowded and messy and... it just wasn't what I wanted my camera to do.

My budget would probably be under $300? Maybe a little more?
Thank you!

I just checked using Tv mode, and there is no noise at all! Any other tests I should try? ):

I'm sorry for your misfortune.. ):

Should I just send my camera in to be checked? It's still under warranty.. right? ):

Oh no! That experience must have been heartbreaking!! If your Pentax survived that.. I guess I will stop freaking out so much about my camera and accept the idea that maybe it survived the fall without any problems! Thank you! :)

Oh, mine fell on hardwood floor too..
I think this post might be about the same issue: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-beginners-corner-q/73946-pentax-k2...m-i-think.html

But I'm still unsure, the sound is really kind of frightening to me to be considered "normal." It sounds like someone/something being electrocuted. Haha..:(

Hm.. So far I've noticed that my flash makes a low buzzing noise when I have the shutter button half released.. Is that normal? Since I'm new to slr cameras, I actually have no idea ):

Thank you! If you don't mind me asking.. How did not having the batteries in help? Just out of curiosity & for my own knowledge! (:

Thank you for the advice!

You think so? It didn't just fall, it kinda like bounced.. lol =__=.
The auto-flash pop-up works! It opened up and flashed my little brother in the eye. Hahah. :X Not sure about the other functions yet though..

Okay, that's a good idea! Maybe I'll ask my photography teacher.. He should know enough to check for me right? I think he has a Masters degree..?

This is actually my first dslr camera, so I have no idea how I would check for misalignments, or any of the more technical things you described, haha..

& yes, my lens was attached when the camera fell. ):

Okay, I know the title sounds terrible.. and stupid. ):

Here's what happened:
So I just received my Pentax k-x camera today. My friend was looking at it and left it on the edge of the table. It wasn't long before my precious camera fell off the table and I heard a loud thump. I quickly put in the batteries and sd card and turned on the camera to check if it was okay.

It turned on fine, and everything seems normal.. I was just wondering if it's possible that my camera survived a fall from a kitchen table without any major damage? I see a very small scratch on the bottom of the camera but that is it (for now.)

What kind of damage would slr cameras usually have when dropped?
