The K10D Club!

Recently I spotted an ebay auction for a K10D, iST DS, two lenses, and a nice gear bag going pretty cheap. The person who listed them took absolutely horrible photos of the items which is why I think it wasn't getting any interest. I wound up getting it for $120.

When it arrived I was very pleased to find that the K10D only has 5,052 actuations! It's also in fantastic condition, EXCEPT it has a focusing issue :(
I've been googling this for days and have seen a few writeups on fixing it, but I have a bad history with my DIY camera repair attempts. Can anyone here recommend someone to send it off to for repair?

In the meantime I've been snapping around with the iST DS and pleased with the results. It's small, light, good ergos, and excellent colors. I think it'll make a nice "beater" to take with me on motorcycle rides or other scenarios where I wouldn't want to bring an expensive cam.

Also, just to spread awareness... I forget which thread it was but someone here mentioned they use this case for their GRIII:

(For my non-US friends, just search "Pelican Go G10 Case" in your local shops)

I got one and it fits the camera very well indeed, and when it's in there there's no way any dust or water or anything can get to it. It's a bit pricey but hey, so is the camera.

Sometimes I think I'm the only one who has noticed there is a set screw on the GRIII ring? Granted I haven't had mine very long, but I tightened that screw as soon as I unboxed it and the ring has never budged. I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned anywhere.

I am a little concerned about dust based on comments I have seen, but I just keep mine in a case when not in use like I do with my other cameras. So far, so good.

Well, it's been a long time since I've been active here on PF. To be honest, since around 2015 I've just been using my iphone for photos/videos. As compact as they are, I just got tired of hauling my K-01 and ME Super gear around. Plus, when I whip out a camera like that, everyone in the immediate area spots it right away and that makes things awkward. But recently I've noticed some of the photo people I follow on instagram have been raving about the GR III, a camera I'd never even heard of. I was impressed with it's spec-to-size ratio, decided that even though it's expensive, I was about due for some new gear anyway

I've only had it one day but I've been reading guides, setting up my user modes, taking some snaps in the house, and WOW. The features and capabilities of this thing are simply incredible for its size. It's even smaller in real life than I'd thought from looking at it online, and it's making me re-think my entire concept of photography. Suffice to say, I'm back in the game. My only regret is not knowing about the GR series sooner!

So, might as well get the intro thread out of the way. I'll try to keep it short...

Back in the mid-90's I was taking a photography class in high school. I didn't have a camera so my uncle let me borrow his SLR. It was this Pentax SF-1:

(click for big)

I enjoyed the class; but being the typical moron teenager I was more interested in videogames and smoking weed with my friends than pursuing my interest in photography. I gave the camera back to my uncle and never shot an SLR again, until...

Flash forward to two years ago, I'm working in quality control and part of the job involves taking photos of defects. My supervisor hated the crappy pics I was taking with my cellphone, so one day he hands me a Canon 20D and said "here, take this one, the company bought a 7D and we don't need it anymore".

I started using it for taking the photos of defects, and that rekindled my interest in photography. I started going around town shooting with it, read a couple books to get myself back up to speed. Before I knew it I found myself with a Canon 1DS II and other goodies, shooting and having fun.

Well, that uncle who had loaned me the SF-1 passed away in the late-90's. My dad inherited most of his stuff, including his cameras and equipment. My dad tucked it away in the closet where it remained until a few weeks ago. He came over one weekend with a camera bag full of stuff and said "these aren't getting used and you're into cameras now so maybe you can use them".

The camera bag contained the SF-1, an A-3000, and 3 lenses, the best of which a 50-A 1.7. I had been considering getting back into film, so I immediately put a fresh battery in the SF-1 and turned it on. It just went "WRRRR...WRRRR...WRRRR" until I yanked the battery. After talking with various camera repair people, I found out this model camera has a plastic gear on the motor shaft, and over time the plastic gets brittle and cracks. Camera is dead. I also checked out the A-3000, but the AA batteries in it had blown up long ago and gunked up everything pretty bad. From the reviews I've read it doesn't seem to be a very good camera anyway, and I'd prefer to use manual mode.

But I still had those lenses. Determined to put them to some use, I checked out the local Craigslist and found a ME Super in pretty much mint condition. Got it for very cheap and it's working perfectly. I gotta say I love this camera. The viewfinder is enormous...it seems just as large as the one in my 1DS. I really like the microprisms and the split recticle, it makes focusing manually very easy. The shutter makes a pleasant *thwap* sound that I never get tired of hearing. And it's so small I can pretty much take it with me anywhere, unlike the 1DS which is frickin' gigantic.

My plan now is to use the ME Super as a small incognito SLR to shoot film with. Eventually I plan on setting up a "bathroom darkroom" and developing/printing the film myself. But that's gonna have to wait until I have the funds. In the meantime I'll just run some rolls through it and have some fun.

Glad to join the forums; there's tons of great info here and I based my decision to buy the Super off of some things I had read in the reviews and the forums.
