Hi, in a nutshell I sent in a new DA 200mm 2.8 lens to Pentax in Arizona to have it fixed (98% of my photos were out of focus with this new lens which has a reputation of being very sharp) and included my K-5 as per the tech's suggestion. Upon getting my lens and K-5 back the problem with the 200mm lens not only persisted, but ALL the photos taken by the Pentax K-5 and ANY lens were out of focus! I must mention that when I received my K-5 and lens back from Arizona, both of them were in ONE plastic bag with no padding whatsoever between them, so the possibility of them banging against each other was quite high! I was pretty surprised at this.
I then sent my K-5 with the same 200mm lens plus a 50mm 1.4 lens to Pentax Arizona. I got everything back (this time each item was packed separately in bubble wrap), apparently adjusted and tested, but my photos are TERRIBLE: 95% are out of focus.
What I would like to try is the following: borrow someone's Pentax K-5 or K-5II and see what the results are using my set of lenses. If the photos come ot sharp, then the problem is definitely with my camera. Are there any Pentaxarians in San Francisco that would be willing to let me test my lenses on their Pantax K-5 or Pentax K5II?
If I cannot resolve this issue it seems I will have no other recourse then to say goodbye to Pentax. I do not want to do that, though, since I have been VERY please with the colors, sharpness and rendering of my shots before my K-5 was "serviced."

I tink the GREEN looks the classiest and the softest of the 3 choices, although the red and black correspond to the Pentax color scheme.

Are you pleased with your Tamron 70-200 or do you think the Sigma 70-200 would work better for you. ---------- Post added 05-02-11 at 09:24 PM ----------
This question was meant for MGBirder. ---------- Post added 05-02-11 at 09:25 PM ---------- Allan. Is the Sigma still under warranty? Does it have any FF issues?

PS Have any of you used the Tamron 70-200 with the K-5? If so, is there marked improvement with noise and AF?

Thanks to all of you who have responded to my posting. I cannot say that you have made my decision too much easier, though. I used to be a Canon user and had the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS lens. Then I switched to Nikon and had their 70-200 2.8 VR lens. It was quite easy to make a decision which lens to buy for the Canon and Nikon, albeit rather expensive. Pentax, in this regard, is more complicated and has no clear cut leader in mid-long telezooms.
Summarizing your comments, I would say the Tamron has the lead - it has the IQ and the reach and the people who have this lens like it (at the same time knowing and willing to live with it's limitations) and recommend it. The Pentax 50-135 has no detractors, but I am used to longer reach (I do understand the weight factor quite well). It is also true that many pros I know use full frame cameras and thus the Pentax 50-135 on an APS camera is equal in reach to their full frame Canon/Nikon 70-200. I plan to consult with at least one of them who specializes in church photography (BTW I am NOT a wedding photographer and the church where I am the staff photographer has no pews) in reagrds to the focal length. It seems the Sigma 70-200 has the best AF, but IQ/copy are of immense importance and are a "hit or miss." There were not too many fans of the Sigma among those of you who replied. So at this time I am more likely to risk buying either the Tamron (its price is about $750) and hoping it works, or the Pentax 50-135 (that runs about $850). With the latter I can either sell it if it doesn't work, or get a prime 200mm/300mm later.

Hi Pentaxarians, I am in a quandry as which telephoto lens to buy. Every day I change my mind about 4 times. Here are the options:
1. Pentax 200mm 2.8. Excellent IQ, AF, but is not a zoom. Most of my shooting will be done in a rather dark cathedral and it is not always possible to walk around much.
2. Pentax 50-135. Very good IQ and AF, although a bit loud (for the church) and focal lengtt is rather limited, although in terms of a FF camera it is equal to 70-210mm.
3. Sigma 70-200 2.8. Fat AF, quiet, but IQ seems questionable as well as front focusing issues.
4. Tamron 70-200 2.8. Loud, focusing issues, especially in dark settings, excellent IQ.
Has anyone used all four? I seem to be leaning more towards the Sigma. I am somewhat concerned about price hikes and do not want to put off the purchase indefinitely. Presently I am using all primes (15mm, 31mm and 77 mm) - this is my travel kit. The telephoto will be used mostly locally for the church where I work.
Thnaks for your advice and input.
Peter

I ordered the exact same two lenses from B&H as well. I LOVE the quality and build, although it seems that the 31mm is a bit on the short end, need something wider. I am thinking of the 21m or the 12-22mm.

Hello. I am a new forum member. I used to be a Canon user (40D), had a fine set of lenses, then quite photography, too addictive. A couple of years later I took it up again with a Nikon 300D, and also quit and sold everything. Now I have decided to take it up once again, after using my son's DSLR. I realized how much I missed it and how fine equipment makes a difference. I decided to go with Pentax this time, a somewhat "intuitive" decision. I received my Pentax K-5, DA31mm and DA77mm a couple of weeks ago. Here is a link to my first shots for the parish I am in: ????????????? ?????????? ????????? 2011 ? 2011 Lenten Clergy Retreat. I made all the photos B&W since the colors in the originals were a bit off, a WB issue. I had another church job last weekend and adjusted the WB. The colors were fine the second time and will post the photos soon. I look forward to being active in the forum with fellow Pentax users.
