Yes, I am completely frustrated with the strategy of modern Pentax digital.

It's garbage and why I no longer purchase any new equipment from them ... given what little new equipment there is, and that is never coming anytime soon ... since there's zero investment in R&D and everything else.

Please feel free to respond using that "M" word again ... because I missed that one before it was removed by the Moderation.

I just purchased a new Fujifilm X-T3 ... so on our day trip to Chambord, I took a few images with the 18mm that I home-made towards being a pan focal lens.

Hi ... just wondering.

Was Ricoh/Pentax present at CP+ 2023?

DPR makes no mention of them and I asked on the comments section.

One person said that they were not in attendence.

Any info ...?

Been absent a bit so here's an offering of the Angénieux 50/1.2 (16mm cinema projection lens mounted in M42 extension tube set) on the K-1 ... I need to shoot a lot of my projection lenses with the K-1 to see if there is any difference and/or improvements on a full frame sensor. (xpost from Projector Lens thread)

Pentax announcement: Considering developing new film camera
Posted By Jean Poitiers
Replies: 692

No one in the general public is going to buy a bare Pentax AF SLR film body at a 1,500 USD price point. Not even at 1,000 USD.

For that kind of money, one can buy a lot of CLA'd vintage Pentax gear ... or any other brand ... (one body, plus several lenses) and still have a bit of money left over ...

This project will never see the light of day because it cannot make penny for Pentax. Period.

OK. I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that a new Pentax film SLR body product (to be born from this project) will never be sold to the general public.

If I ever see one in my B&M photo shop, I will buy it and eat it. Fried, raw ... or as you like.

Yes, let's "wait and see" (the moto of modern digital Pentax) ... I am afraid that I will be correct in the near or not so distant future.

Never to be mass produced and sold to the general public.

Hope that I am wrong ... so yes, let's wait and see.

Interview with Ricoh Imaging president about new strategy

Thanks to all for the correction on my error concerning the Pentax-Tokina 50/1.4 ... my bad.

That said, it still does not change the reality that it was the only Pentax lens featured in a 48-page special section of the most prominent photo mag in France.

Again, no recently released 21mm ... no "Limited"s at all ... nothing else featured which is a cold hard fact which cannot be ignored.

This is not good news, and everyone here on this forum needs to be screaming at Pentax management concerning its current strategy. This is not going to be sustainable in the long term. Pentax is losing again more ground (on many fronts) ... the example here is its brand presence and visibility in a major photo magazine.

Yeah, this is another rant because I still care enough to keep pushing on the alarm button. I still have my beloved K-5 and an aperture block failure K-30 plus my K mount manual lenses ... still shoot them from time to time.

I want the game to change in favor of Pentax, but I cannot see that happening given the current strategy.

OK.

"You don't get it with Pentax" ?! Really ... with my 18K+ posts on this forum with over 7K "likes" ... yup, I know zero about Pentax. It's also so evident in my Pentax gear list description, which is immediately below all my post signatures. And just FYI, I was once asked if I would be interested in being a Moderator on this forum. I had to unfortunately decline due to my time constraints at that moment.

You write essentially that there is "no need" for new lenses for a DSLR system, so one could ask why the need for the new 21mm f/2.4, which was released over a year after it was announced? Why bother updating anything in the Pentax line using such rational?

I really don't care if one needs to attack Fuji or any other brand ... I am not attacking the Pentax brand. I am raising my concerns about the viability of the current business strategy, which excludes any mirrorless offering(s).

I have the right to disagree with the current strategy, which I strongly believe is an enormous error. Time will tell which way may have been the best direction.

In my opinion, Pentax in the (near) future will be seen (by newer generations entering the sector of "enthusiast and/or semi-pro" camera market) as a "has-been" brand embracing only "seemingly outdated" OVF technology.

I will be 60 next year, and I am in three local photo clubs (one of which I am the President). As a majority, there are no "younger" members of these clubs that (still) use DSLRs ... and I cannot see many born after 2000 embracing DSLR technology. They are of a pure digital age, and thus IMHO the user base of Pentax will not expand under the current strategy ... and as time marches on, that same Pentax user base will diminish to a point where the brand can no longer be economically sustainable.

Today's business world is dominated by short-term financial return ratios, which don't care if the product has an OVF or an EVF.

Maybe hard realities to be faced here, but someone needs to be a devil's advocate ... and maybe pull (a lot) on the fire bell cord. Enough said.

Ricoh/Pentax new strategy: Shift to e-Commerce and "studio-style" manufacturing
Posted By Jean Poitiers

Thanks for your post.

I am not leaving Pentax. Just FYI, I still have ...

- my K-30, K-5, K110D (for film camera list, see below)

- my M series lenses : 20/4, 28/2.8, 35/2, 35/2.8, 40/2.8, 50/1.4, 50/1.7, 50/4, 80/2, 100/2.8, 100/4, 120/2.8, 135/3.5, 200/4 plus the M zooms
- my K lenses : 24/2.8, 28/3.5, 35/3.5, 50/1.2 (x2), 55/1.8, 85/1.8 plus K zooms
- my Taks, Super-Taks & SMC Taks : 17, 28, 35 (x2 different), 50 (7 & 8 version), 55, 58 (x2 versions), 85 (x2 versions), 105, 135(x2 versions) ...
- my 3 non-MLU 67 bodies of which only one works now + the 55 & the 105
- my old AF primes : F 50/1.7 & FA 50/1.4 on the PZ-1 and other AF bodies ... plus some odds & ends F zooms ...

I have just had enough with "modern" Pentax ... I will no longer support the course that is in place now, and I will not buy another new DSLR from any brand. That's my choice, period.

Again, if Pentax were to make a mirrorless, I would be first in line to get one. Until (and if) then, I use my Pentax lenses on the Fujifilm bodies and go on my happy way.

Gear pictures available upon request ;-)

Flickr site = "Jean Poitiers" ... and yes, I should go out and take more photos ... and definitely less time on this keyboard.

Pentax has had a strong, dedicated following in France for quite a while. A friend of my mine just bought a K-1ii, and I may give him a few goodies, on verra.

Ricoh/Pentax new strategy: Shift to e-Commerce and "studio-style" manufacturing

This handwriting was on the hall a long time ago for me. Their business strategy/plan was garbage for many years. Plus ZERO R&D and it showed.

The non-mirrorless direction/decision was just plain stupid ... and why I am pulling away from Pentax despite years of deep loyalty.

I dumped all my Limited lenses last year along other assorted AF K-mount glass ... plus I sold off the K-1 two months ago. I had it for over 5 years, and Pentax did nothing with this body ... the K-1ii does not count since there were no major differences IMHO. None.

I guess that I will keep my M glass collection, my beloved Tak collection and a few fav' film bodies, being the MX, ME Super, Spot F & Spot II, for the short list. Using my lens collection on the X-T3 & X-Pro for lots of fun. Maybe a Nikon or Sony mirrorless next year, so as to shoot them all on FF.

If Pentax develops a FF mirrorless, then I will be all over it ASAP ... would be great with the M's & Tak's.

I guess that hope springs eternal for me and my Pentax dreams ... enough of my rant.

8 element Super-Takumar 50/1.4 wide open on Fujifilm X-E1 ... I received a new M42-to-FX adapter today, so I slapped a lens on it. The first two are snaps from our garden and the last from a brief visit to city center ... while Charlotte was at her flute lesson. I have really nothing to do for about a 30+ minute wait, so I just amble about here and there. (x-post from the Bokeh thread)
