Nippon Camera Ricoh/Pentax 2019 Interview

Part of the issue is that in the early days of digital, we become accustomed to 'break through' developments every year. That isn't happening any more. For example, Nikon introduced the D5 and D500 three years ago, and only now are they reaching the point where people are talking 'refresh'; the AF system they share is still excellent. Nikon, Canon, and Sony each is able to have many cameras in their current catalog, so they can offer a camera "just right" for each person. Pentax's finances limit them to a much smaller catalog, so they can be "just right" for many fewer people.

Customers are leaving because:

- they don't rely on pixel shift as any tiny movement is problematic for it to provide superior resolution
- and the lack of prime lenses that they need
- auto-focus
- speed of operation / buffer

I can give three examples of forum members who left Pentax, no counting the PF member who quietly sold their K1 system in the market place..

Please give me pseudo-names of 3 new Pentax customers who came from S, or C or N in last quarter of 2018.

Yes, correct , and customers don't care about how long it takes to develop a new camera, customer look at options in the market and select what they want. It's not the job of customer to wait for the camera maker to deliver, it's up to the camera maker to deliver the product customer want to buy at the time they want to buy. Imagine you are thirsty, you order a bottle of water but the water company comes back with water the next day after you already got water some someone else.. too late. Timing is very important in business, timing is even more important that details of the product. Pentax customers are patient customer, they wait, but they don't wait two years for having a lens, come on!

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

IDK, I found the review plausible straight across the board. I do not think they were attacking Pentax, they were just offering an opinion on what Pentax has offered us. I hate to say it, but Pentax has fallen well behind in the game. It's not a secret. I still love my Pentax's but I'm a realist. Some of these new releases from Fujifilm and Sony are quite innovative and game changers.

Why is it wrong for me to want my pentax gear to track AF better than it currently does.

With that attitude Pentax should never bring out a new camera because you are 100% happy with what you have now?

As for wanting Pentax to be another brand, I never said that so don’t appreciate the implication. I want a new Pentax camera to improve in areas I see as current weaknesses, because I’m happy with the IQ and ergonomics Pentax offer at the moment.

Capable subject tracking AF, ideally across much more of the frame, and improvements in video/returning the mechanical stabilisation they took away etc, are pretty high on my wants for a newer Pentax model.

Yes our wants are different, but I’m a Pentax User too and have ideas for improvement.

I know Adam is going to eject me from this forum if I shared a joke that illustrates the roadmap comment you made. It is a little risque but it hits the nail on the head. Oh well may be for another day.

That is exactly my point. Who needs a road map especially the Pentax one. Stop playing games and bring out the products people need.

As far as Sony road map, they don't need one. They have gone from no player to one who has forced Nikon and Canon into the mirrorless game and forced Panasonic to go into the FF game. They own and make the brain (sensor) of their camera and the one for Nikon and Pentax. They have released more lenses than I can shake a stick at. I can barely keep up with reading about the introductions and products that are being delivered. I do not need a road map for Sony.

As far as Canon and Nikon, who cares. They have more lenses and bodies than any other manufacturer. Their toad map is to survive the Sony juggernaut.

So back to Pentax. I do not need a road map that stretches into the next century! I need to see a few useful albeit necessary features and products now (more like yesterday) not in year 2030!

When will Pentax catch up to the other big makers?

no; the reason they need more marketshare is so they can sell more stuff, period. My argument is 3rd party vendors help do that. Why do you think e-mount took off? Hint, it wasn't because everyone jumped on the Sony bandwagon blindly.

Apple made the market. Of course they can charge a premium. As does Canon.

Nikon is arrogant, they've always been arrogant. Just like IBM in the 1980's.

This camera is a fail, and every youtube vlogger says so.

Big brown truck stopped at my house today with my new K-1 and am in love already. My Tamron 70-200 is like a brand new lens now the screw drive is virtually silent now and so quick and snappy. Pictures are coming out awesome even though not much to take pics of it is just amazing out of all my Pentax cameras this is the first that wowed me straight out of box no getting used to.

Macro One more - tuning your camera for Macro ... The process

Sorry guys - one more post !
The process of tuning your camera ...

You know where I start ...

Lowest ISO , highest flash sync speed and smallest aperture .

Set you lens for the focus distance ( Macro )

Take a test shot :

If the image is dark you have a few choices .. I would start with ISO and increase it ..
Another test shot .. If its still dark either increase ISO more or open the aperture .
Generally I would mess with shutter speed last ( hopefully not at all when setting up / tuning )
Keep doing this till you have a decently lit image .

Once you have a image that is well lit , but not so bright as to suffer flare ...
You want to take some test shots ..

Next we want to play with aperture .. We want decent depth of field - the amount of space in front and behind the point of focus that is in focus .. This will depend greatly on the working distance ( distance to subject )
The rule is simple .. The closer the subject the less DOF you have to work with . To counter this you increase F-stop ( make the aperture smaller )
Depending on your set up , there may be limitations you have to take into consideration ( Light ) Testing will help determine this .

So depending on the variables your camera / lens is subject to you may possibly be restricted to F16 for arguments sake . So with the camera set to F16 take some test shots . Try different points of focus ( amount of macro ) . One does this to determine if the DOF is adequate and at what distance ... Remember you may need to adjust the ISO while opening ( adjusting ) the aperture .
Some people are happy to run F16 and others are happy with F22 or ?? ( It is for you to explore and see what makes you happy - works for you )

This is how I tune a camera .. I test settings and check the results . The results will determine my working distance . I hardly ever compromise on shutter speed , I will compromise on ISO and Aperture to a point .. I dont go so high on the ISO as to lose IQ , and I dont lower the Fstop so much as to lose too much DOF . This is up to the individual to determine as the variables will be the camera / lens and flash + environmental variables .

This is the process I utilize .. Start maxed out and then slowly come back to what works with the equipment I use ..

If the image is too bright - we need to cut back the amount of light - I have already mention diffusing the light , unless you have a flash that can vary output . You might also be able to move the light , but the danger here is that you may shoot against a flat object that reflects all that light back at the lens ..
Id say the largest part of macro is just setting up and tuning your equipment .. ( The hardest part ) The actual taking a picture part is so easy .. ( within reason )
Once you know what camera settings work for you , one can transfer that knowledge to other lenses / cameras ( Setting up knowledge )

Would that be more of a mess ? ( Harder to keep track off )

---------- Post added 09-07-17 at 10:53 AM ----------

We can go quietly into the night - or we can go kicking and screaming ! ( Maybe not kicking and screaming )

I like macro and I want to see others get the full enjoyment out of it .
And I really hate to see people fall by the wayside when there is no need . Just a few helpful hints and maybe they take the next step - plant the seed and watch it grow .

There is just too much out there that is easy and distracting that people can do with little effort , just look at all those cradling their mobile phones .
For macro people have to think , to explore , test , practice and sort things out . Maybe that is asking too much ? So perhaps some guide posts . (?) I could be just wasting my time ?
But with no effort comes no gain .

Focus Peaking Color Choice

Would it be possible to develop a firmware update, in which the highlighting color of the in-focus portion during Live View ( with focus peaking enabled ) could be changed to a color of choice. Having white, red, blue and possibly green as choices would be a real help with some scenes. Thanks. :)

You are forgetting that the Full Frame market is somewhere between 10 and 15 % of the total dslr market. Even if the camera is a huge hit for Pentax, the salesnumbers will be low. For the pricerange of the D810 you won't see any real boxes moving in shops.
