Just another CP+ report [pics included]

Totally agree... if the brand doesn't fit your style it is pointless to keep just waiting (sometimes in vain) for the products to eventually fit, we all have our needs, and perhaps we all wish/wished something from RICOH at some point but if that doesn't happen, well, its time to move on... but if Pentax fits what you shoot and how you enjoy shooting this is a lovely system.

Is Pentax in the need of a M/L system?

Yes, i think the same.. actually the reports show that in fact the people stopped buying entry level cameras dslrs or point and shoot cameras, most probably because that is the same people that can take the same picture with their cell phone, so basically the ones that are investing in camera gear are the pro market or the prosumers.. and it totally makes sense, reaching less buyers but with higher budget.

Not really, by future I mean to ensure that there will be repair shops, firmware upgrades, new products that fit modern standards, new technology, etc, etc...

I think that is true.. in part..

When you invest big money in a camera system you want to ensure that this system have a future.. at this point the K system future could be unknown, and that issue holds back custumers to buy more gear (specially the most expensive) OR to get into the system at all... The question about Ricoh having a mirrorless is not really about having it, its about keeping the company interested in suporting the K mount some how, for casual shooters that might not be important, for pro shooters know that the company where you invest your money $$$$ have a future and a path is very important, so depending the situation is not only the company headache, sadly it's also a client headache.

True.. the question here is... how long will that learning thing last? i mean, for the brand took way to long to have a FF and they were just "studing the market", it was a very very high price that was paid for not having a FF camera sooner... will that happen again with a capable mirrorless system? hope that it doesn't but at this time its just a limbo situation where nobody knows what it going to happen in the next days, months..... years.... I think that perhaps people is not just expecting a M/L camera or system.. people is just expecting something to hype the vibe.. K3ii is way to old for todays standard, K1 good but samething is getting old and nichie.. and if we add to that that many lenses are needed, and people don't see nothing more than a revamp old FA... I honestly don't know what to think of what is going on.

Sorry if the post bothered you, that wasn't the idea.. my point was that the market is moving way to fast and I honestly don't see Ricoh doing nothing to "be there".. Do i care if they do? yes and no... yes because I like the brand and i wish the best for it.. but at the same time I don't because I sold all my Pentax gear basically because of the same passivity that Ricoh shows. I really hope that some how they jump in some wagon, any wagon so the brand can survive and keep delivering great products. But now more than ever I think that they need to release something to at least make them be there.. if is a mirrorless thats ok.. if is a great DSLR, that's ok too..

So, i wonder if by having this revamped 34mm would eventually means that the 35 f1.4 will be on hold for who knows how long?? i mean by having this "new" 35mm Ricoh can start feeling gaps, and they focus on something else at least for a while.

Perhaps that is the most honest truth about Pentax.. I came to the conclution that Pentax do what they do and that's it.. expecting something else might just be an utopia of how many users wish something else.. but it is not in the Pentax dna to do it that way.. and if for some folks that is good, well.it's awesome... for those who don't think so, well.. there are great products out there from Sony, Fuji, Canon, Nikon, etc, etc.. Is the "Pentax way" the best business model for a camera company? IMO and as a client i would say that no, but that's the way they do it and that's it.. I feel that Pentax is a brand without gray tones, you are part of the ones that yo love the products and performance as it is now, or part of the ones that don't, the ones in the middle are the ones that just wish something else, and with Pentax that something else might not come at all, or might come late so.. so, there is not really a point to wish and hope for changes knowing how things are.

Kind of.. but for example Sony use almost the same body for their entry (a7) and advance (a9) cameras.. they change just a few things but the main change is inside, not really outside.. But yes, more features and controls means more space most of the time.

I guess that could work as long s they develop not only f1.4 versions.. aps-c users are not use to be charged with a lot of money for their lenses + most want to keep the size relatively small, and the f1.4 versions are expensive and big.. so releasing f1.8 versions and f4 versions of primes and zooms can keep both markets "happy" for a while...

Oh my!! .. this topics are always like runnin in circles chasing tails.. for some people the system will be perfect for their needs as it is.. for some other the system could be not good at all.. Some of the points mention by @xmedia are true, hard, ugly, nasty true, but it will be only true to the ones that expect something else from what Ricoh is doing now and that is fine. Is Pentax as a brand running behind the other brands?? IMO yes, other systems are moving constantly and with Ricoh everything seems to be just in "stand by", just as an example, if you compare the pentaxrumors.com feed, against the sonyalpharumors.com page there is a BIG difference in announcements of every kind, and this influence the people about investing or not in a new system.

Ricoh/Pentax marketing i think that we can all agree that is THE WORST, they just simply can not sell their products at the right time, to the right people and using the right channels... for the old die folks using Pentax that might not be important, for the ones searching for a path to follow this is a "no no " thing.

Just as an example yesterday i was reading an article at PetaPixel - Photography and Camera News, Reviews, and Inspiration ( Where Mirrorless is Headed in 2019 ) and this is how the article mentioned Pentax:

"Pentax

Incomplete. Hasn’t showed up to class since 2014, and then only to turn in a revised homework assignment that didn’t change their grade at all.

I’m wondering if Pentax is still a student. Should I put in a missing person’s report?

Less work for me with Pentax absent, I suppose, which is fine."

and as i see it is not just about the mirrorless thing.. its about the all camera thing.. seems like Pentax is the missing student in all this crazy camera world... or is just the one that shows to the party when all the other people already ate.. that doesn't mean at all the the products are bad, it just means that their timming is way off track.. and the priorities are just mmm unknown.. for somebody that is just investing in a system and wants a path to follow this "business strategy" it is terrible..

That would be nice pretty nice.. some f4.0 and f1.8 series will help a lot to complete the gaps with out breaking the bank.. When I purchased my new system I actually didn't move to the f1.4 lenses basically because 2 reasons, #1 size, i wanted to keep it compact and light and modern f1.4 lenses are mmm well are the contraty, plus are much more expensive, #2 Image quality, having some f1.8 with top class IQ and small size can help a lot to fill gaps at a reasonable cost, might not have the same bokeh as a f1.4 but who cares about that if you can have sharp images, good colors, portability AND save money??

It will be hard.. very hard to achieve, perhaps not impossible, but extremly hard.

What I see is that Pentax have 3 main systems. APS-C, FF and MF.. all of their users wants products, all have specific needs and the worst part is that ALL of them want this products FAST, and sadly that can't be done, not for a small division such as Pentax. In the last 2 years they focus the effort in the FF system, but we can tell that is not fast enough

IMO the new 50mm is great.. but a modern 20/25mm 35mm f1.4 85mm f1.4 and just to put some cherry on top a 135 f2.0.. those are the "basic" ones missing... Ofcourse the old FA lenses are around but.. those are old, noisy and in some cases the IQ is not a match to modern standards.

When i said that, i was talking about the pushing back the release of products, the 85mm was just an example... Now if you talk to the pro portrait/weddings now days, the primes are basic tools, as simple as that... some classic style photographers might still preffer zooms, and that is ok, but the current people leading the industry mostly shoot with primes splited in 2 cameras.. One camera with 35 the other one with 85.. one with 24.. the otherone with a 50.. as an example.. Zooms cam be use ofcourse, but not as it used to be.. Zooms will only give you a f2.8 and are heavy most of the time.. Now if you talk about landscape, nature, etc.. well that's another photo field and a complete different story, this tools/lenses might not that important, but for portrait/wedding it is a most and basic tool.

This are the things that most pro users can't handle.. not knowing what/when are the basic tools coming to the market... IMO, RICOH need lenses AND a new FF as soon as possible to not be left behind by this market train.. by this interview we can say that.. well nothing new, people is just flying the limb lands.

DP Review puts K-1 Mark II as second worst camera of 2018

I guess that it all comes of what everyone needs out of a system, of course we all wish to find what we need in just one system but that is hard, specially for Pentax that is a small company that just entered the digital full frame market 3 years ago, it's hard to catch up with the other big ones, perhaps some of the users were expecting more than what the company was able to produce, not because they dont want but because they can't and it takes time (years) for them to do it... We cant deny the the lack of modern lenses is an issue, perhaps somebody is looking for a modern 20mm f2.8 or faster, or a modern 28.. modern 35.. modern 85.. etc, etc.. and for those looking that lenses its an issue, of course we have the zoom as you said, but thouse are big and heavy, so that might not be a fit for whoever is not looking for big/heavy... I honestly think that Pentax is the perfect brand for whoever fits in what they do at the current time, but if the camera features or the lenses available at ths time are not what a user needs its better to look somewhere else and keep waiting for RICOH to release a product that fits the need of that specific user, specially because we all know how slow is Pentax to release new products that can match the modern products that are in the market.

Congratulations for your daughters wedding, it is always a really special day for the couple.. // Just as a wedding photographer tip, if they hired a pro (if not you can ignore this post) for the job try to not be in his/hers way at the ceremony, speaches, toasts, and every important moment that will happen during the day, you can't imagine the amount of lovely shots that gets ruined by the "uncle bob" camera jumping in the frame at the worst time.. those are moments that will never happen again (well sometimes it happens more than 1 haha.. but you get the idea) so if they hired a person to do the job, just relax, take your shots from your sit or from a position where you will not be on the main photographer way, receptions at more relax, specially during the dance you can get crazy shooting pics, but everything else have some key moments that will never happen again and can be ruined very easy , i know that the best intentions are always there but just be careful and enjoy such a lovely day with the family. You can give the same advice to the grooms father if you see that he is getting too crazy during the key moments.

Talking specific about weddings it have some advantages, i shoot weddings for living, not just like once in a while wedding thing.. i mean like every single weekend of the year... and IMO A7iii does have some key features that for wedding shooters are top important: 1- AF-C is much much advance, it really works and its really fast, you can keep track of people moving very easy coming to you, getting away from you, right, left.. it really works fast and easy.. 2- Eye-AF is an amazing feature for any kind of portrait shooter.. 3- Buffer size is really good, in order to lock the camera you have to be a really spray shooter.. if not, the camera can hold very well the buffer.. 4- available modern lenses and their size.. if we take apart the GM series Sony have some really nice small size lenses such as the 28mm f2, 55mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8 that are all modern and silent.. and if we add to that the new Tamron 28-75 f2.8 that is a really compact zoom 2.8 you can get a nice small size system... 5- custom bottons are really hepful.. for example i have C3 set to when if I hold it it changes my setting to 1/160 f2.0 and auto ISO with a top of 6400 that is very helpful for unpredictable situations like if somebody walk in the room and you want to get a fast if of that person reaction while you are taking another shot with a totally different exposure, for weddings that is really really helpful.. 6- silent shooting is also a plus when needed.

Now.. this doesnt mean that A7III is better camera than K1.. it just means that for that kind of work ( weddings/events ) it is a tool that fits better.. I have been shooting weddings with K1 since it came out, actually i think that mine was the first K1 that was in Costa Rica by that time.. and it was good, it was lovely to shoot with the K1 and the job was done, but I can not deny I had some limitations that with the A7iii I don't have.. but K1 also have some advantages, the 36MP sensor is really nice to crop and to get detail and the ergonomics of Pentax are way better than Sony, the way that you can tilt the screen with the K1 is really good, strange but good, also the custom dial is a really nice feature.

You are right, K1 it's a really nice enjoyable camera, the 36MP sensor IMO is the sweet spot for many shooting styles, and if it works for what you are looking for in a camera based on what you shoot that is great... If we compare it with the Sony models it just feels different, it feels like a well build tank.. for you and for many people that is/was very important.. but the truth is that K1 doesn't fit every work, ofcourse it can do the work, but not with the facilities as others can... people goes where the right tool is, if the K1 is the right tool that is awsome, if is not mmm there comes the troubles.

There is no perfect camera, we all know that, the thing is that if you have choises people can stay within the manufacturer ecosystem without looking somewhere else.. for Pentaxians if the K1 is not a fit there is no other FF within Pentax that you can look for, maybe when the K1ii was release this posibility to choose was in the mind of many users that like the K1 but needed something a little different, and as i see it this is what DPreview disliked about the K1ii, didn't bring nothing new to the table besides some minor changes (that some dont like at all).. and many other manufactures did bring new models with new features that simply put the K1ii as a not relevant release, hopefully this will change in 2019 with new FF models, but that is something that nobody knows for sure, is it going to be a fast 24mp camera.. a totally improved K1.. a higher resolution 42mp+ camera?? 4K? nobody knows..
