I love my navy K-x and I wish they made the flagships K-5/3 in navy (or white) or any other color other than silver and gray. =(

50mm 1.4 vs. 43mm 1.9 for portraits

Thanks Bilik!

I guess you did option 4: Change the spot focus to the side spot and take the shot. Since you chose a selected focus point on the eye and took the shot. If you focused on the body, then the body would be the one in focus, not the eyes.

Thank you for your answer! =D

Nice pics! I have a newbie question. For the event picture, did you either: 1. Use center spot focus on the face then recompose, 2. Focus on the face and crop, 3. Just focused on the body, or 4. Change the spot focus to the side spot and take the shot?

I have been eyeing the DA Limited primes but the high prices have been keeping me from jumping on them. So I keep a close eye on used ones instead.

What feature keeps you with Pentax?

1. Size. The size of the body+lens is much more compact than those of Canikon. Even the micro 4/3rds cameras have many fat lens so the size savings isn't that great.
2. Value for cost. The K5 is optically better than a Canon 7D while the cost is much lower. And I got a K5II with a 18-135mm WR since WR is affordable.
3. Limited primes. I love my 43mm and 77mm's size and weight. The IQ is also supposedly quite good, but I'm still a beginner and learning how to take good shots with them.

I always keep checking out the Nikons and Canons, but the size and cost of changing into a new system keeps me from switching over.

Anything with an FA, F, A, M, K, and M42 should be safe. Outside of those symbols, they were made for the cropped sensor but MIGHT work for FF (you won't know unless it was tested by someone on this forum).

Actually, from the sounds of it, it looks like a British cultural thing to do. I'm in Japan where people immediately apologize when they realize they were in someone's picture; it's just in their culture to be aware of others and respectful.

Then on the other hand, it looks like since you're in the UK, you're running into a different culture other than Floridians. =)

Edit: I wanted to add that I was taking pictures in a famous bridge in New York this year, and people at least tried to get out of the way of people's pictures. So I feel that even in America, the usual custom is to let people take their pictures.

Post Edit: I just remembered: France is highly sensitive to street photography and their privacy. They were pretty violent against people having cameras in their presence. So perhaps it's a European privacy culture you're experiencing. :)

Poll: K-5II or K-5IIs - which one will you choose if the price is the same?

I had to make the decision this weekend between the II and IIs. Since they were the same prices, I immediately ordered the IIs for the increased resolution. However, I wanted the 18-135WR lens, and if I bought that with the IIs, it would have totalled $1500 (1050+450) instead of the $1350 for the II+lens. Also, as I read more and more pages here on the forum, it seemed like there was definitely a higher (of course, YMMV) chance to get moire in all types of photography, and I didn't want to bother with the nagging worry that it would show up in my pictures.

So I decided that I would probably not need to worry about the increased resolution since I wouldn't be pixel peeping all my pictures, and that the II would still be an awesome upgrade from my K-x, so I cancelled the IIs and bought the II instead. :) So the cost savings and realization that I would enjoy the II just as much as a IIs with a little less worry on the side.

(Black Friday) Pentax K-5 IIs: $1049 at B&H ($250 off!!, same price as K-5 II)

Buy it now for the $1049 price. It's called Black Friday/Cyber Monday for a reason. It's a limited offer sale before it goes back to the normal prices. Of course, the price will surely drop slowly over next year, but for now and the next few months, this is the best price you can get.

As for the K-3.... you won't have a Black Friday event until November, so the K-3 will still cost more than the IIs for a while. ;)

Sadly, I won't be joining your IIs club. My budget was tighter than I thought so I couldn't get an IIs and a 18-135WR which would be $1500 total, so I instead cancelled my order and got the K-5 II with the 18-135WR kit for $1350. :) I guess that means some other people will receive their IIs faster. :)

Blurriness? Low light help, lens repair, and fast lens question

Thank you for your replies! A little bit more clarification, the room had the students and the teacher in it, so a tripod + long exposure wouldn't have worked since it would cause all the people to be blurry. So I needed a long DOF and ability to stop motion, or a short DOF which leads into my next question that I remembered:

1. Is it possible for the AF points to be off? I have it on single point most of the time, but it doesn't seem to be focused on it when I shoot sometimes. I tried the center spot, and some of the edge spots trying to get the middle row of students in focus, but the camera wanted to get the back wall in focus instead everytime. =( Is it because the AF spots aren't sensitive in a darkish room? I'll try to upload some of the pictures later.

Blurriness? Low light help, lens repair, and fast lens question

Hi everyone!

I've been enjoying my navy Pentax K-x for a year and a half now, and I still feel like there is so much to learn to use my camera well. I lurked and read hundreds of pages here in this forum (Thank you for your shared wisdom) before making the purchase of a K-x and a MIJ early silver 43mm (serial 7333) and 77mm. I was convinced by some of the members that it would do me well to start off learning photography on primes, and I reasoned that I could always sell my primes back at reasonable prices if I couldn't get the knack of it. But after using the kit lens and these 2 primes for these 2 years, I came up with some questions that I couldn't find an answer to:

1. How can you tell if a lens is a good copy or not (blurry)? I bought my K-x and 43mm used, and it seems like a lot of the pictures I take are a little blurry. I'm not sure whether it's because the lens is at fault, or if there's a front/back focus problem (and I think a K-x isn't like the K-5 with adjustments), or if it's the K-x problem. =( Or, it could be that I like taking the pictures at F1.9-2.8, so the depth of field is thinner and therefore it's harder to get the right area in focus. =( And if there is a possibility of a problem, should I send it into repair? I have a low serial 43mm, which is supposed to have the special blue coating and I heard I might lose that coating if it's repaired....

2. In low light, am I supposed to use a lower F stop? Sure, I can use f4 on my 43mm, but it sort of defeats the purpose of having those extra 2 stops, and my kit lens can do the same f stop. However, with a lower f stop, the DOF is again thinner and makes it harder to get a good shot. I know I can up the iso or lower the shutter speed, but at 1/30 shutter speed, many pictures are still sort of dark and needs a high iso. =(

I just recently was asked to shoot some pictures for a school catalog, and they wanted me to do some room shots. However, as it was a little dark, I couldn't use a low f stop or else the depth would be too narrow. But with f8 or f11, it was really dark and I needed to up the iso to even see the whole room (it's about a 150 feet long room) But an iso of 1600 is pretty grainy in my opinion. How would you have solved this? I shot in RAW and I still couldn't overcome the graininess.

Thank you for your help! I love my camera but having problems with low light and blurriness have marred my enthusiasm a bit. =( Your advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure I have more questions but these are the ones I remembered.

I'm here in Tokyo, Japan, and I see ads for the K-30 everywhere. Also, the trains show commercials on the tvs, and I've seen the cool ad (an adventurer going trekking through the wet jungle marsh for a shot of the quetzal) for the K-30 at least 10 times already. It looks like Pentax-Ricoh is going all out marketing the camera and making it appear much cooler than the Canons/Nikons. =)

Looking for a good conditioned white pentax K-x with the white kit lens. PM me if you have one for sale. I'm also located in Japan right now and prefer the international shipping, but if you cannot sell overseas, I can have it shipped to my parents place in Mississippi.

(Oh, and if you have a rare white K-x with pink handles, that would be even better) =D

Pentax k-x and manual lenses

Thanks for the replies. =) I haven't used a manual camera before but seeing that there are many good manual lens available for my K-x, I wanted to learn about them before I commit to buying them.

selar> The review sites say the Liveview for the K-x is slow in focusing, so if I was doing anything other than tripod work with my manual lens, it'll be a bit difficult to get the focus down, right? ^^;;

I guess I'll just have to practice for a while to get it right. =)

I noticed the FA silver limiteds are roughly around the same price as the blacks, but why are the silver DA limiteds so much more expensive than the normal blacks? =/ It's making it harder to decide to get a full set of silver DA limiteds when the blacks are such good deals. =/

Wow, did you take them all with a tripod or handheld? And about your football picture, I seem to see a diagonal white line on the upper left that makes it look "cropped" or something. Or is it just my computer?
