History also says that Pentax pushing video can ruin a good camera (K20D -> K7)

Looks like I'm coming back (again)

Since last we spoke I moved to Mirrorless and purchased a stunning little Olympus E-M5. It is a fantastic camera and I have no complaints.
However there is still an itch that needs scratching. Like a relationship where I never found closure. The camera that will always top my "should never have sold it" list (there is a matching motorcycle list, but that's another story).
Its the K-5 Classic.
Without a doubt, the K-5 felt the most natural in my hands. I easily got my best photos from it. It was the best 'fit'.

So with my friend Tess recently upgrading to a K-3 and moving OS soon, her old K-5 was up for grabs. I couldn't say no.
Watch this space, a K-5 is coming back.

Bag for Q?

I've been hunting around for a while for a nice small bag that would take the Q and a couple of lenses.
However being a fairly funky (and in Silver/Black) a fairly retro camera, I really wanted something that would suit the Q. Not just some black, nylon thing....

Last week I spotted this on eBay. And taking a punt on the measurements I ordered it...
THE BOX Brownie Camera BAG Retro Vintage Style Shoulder BAG FOR DSLR | eBay

IMGP1425 by Mr Lurch, on Flickr

The one thing I dont like about this and similar hard leather, vintage/retro bags is they tend not to have any dividers in them and I'm not a huge fan of having my gear rattling around in a bag.
Putting in a divider for the camera to have a snug fit was easy. I've got a few random velcro dividers kicking around from past bags. But this then lead to an empty space in theory for the lenses. But again, I dont like them just rattling around.
I then remembered the small loops bags used to have in the lid to keep film rolls. Well, a Q lens isn't that much bigger than a film roll really (compared to a full sized lens at least).

So I set to work.....

The more observant of you may have noticed the three screws in the top?
(Here is a better view)

IMGP1427 by Mr Lurch, on Flickr

Essentially I just drilled 3 holes in the lid and put in a series of straps with buckles (velcro straps would also do).

IMGP1430 by Mr Lurch, on Flickr

The only thing you cant see here is; behind the silk lining I slipped in a small strip of 2mm mild steel. About 2cm wide and 16.5cm long. Three matching holes are drilled in it to match the three screws. This gives the lid some rigidity when you tighten up the strap, or you end up with weird ugly 'lumps' in the lid.

So now I have a nice small, stylish (I think) bag that securely holds the Q with a lens on it and two more lenses and still some useful room for other things (flash perhaps?)

The only thing left to do it replace those three screws with some nice brass ones to match the rest of the bag.

I'm not the most active member here. A lot of that has to do with me selling my K5 earlier this year and getting a D800.

Allow me to preface this with saying that the D800 is a terrific camera and well, well beyond my pathetic skill levels.

But.... I wish I hadn't.

Probably because the D800 is so far beyond my abilities and as a hobbyist I just dont have the time to put into bringing my skills up to even close. I love my photography, but thats life I guess.
But the nutshell version is that I just haven't bonded with the Nikon as I had with my K5. Where the K5 urged me to pick it up and play with it, use it, and basically not leave it alone. I just dont get that from the Nikon.
So what I'm saying is that if you're champing at the bit to go FF; my *personal* experience tells me - dont. Sure, if you've got the time and patience to invest into a whole new system and replace all your kit, then awesome. But I've just found it to be soooo much more than a) I need, and b) I can use.
So (for as long as I've been a member here) Pentaxians have been going on (and on, and on, and on) about a FF camera, I would hazard a guess that for a fair chunk of people "it's just not necessary" <- to be read with James May in your head.

If I was to do it again and with a good dose of hind sight - I wouldn't have done it. I would have hung onto my gorgeous K5 and would now be looking at the K3 for Xmas.
In fact I will give the D800 the summer, and if I still feel the same - it will go and a K5/ii or a K3 will come and I'll rebuilding my beloved Pentax lens collection again (starting with my fave, the Sigma 20-40mm 2.8)

The rear AF button, but I'm slowing getting used to it - so not a big deal.
Coming from a D800, the size and weight. It's *soooo* much smaller and lighter - I love it. By the time I bought a new bag (because the K-3 was pretty much lost in the depths of the D800 bag) I've pretty much *halved* my bag size and still carrying the body + grip + lens, a second lens, and a flash.
Love it....

Since Jan 1st, myself and a couple of mates have been doing a 365 challenge. We all agreed to get thru January and re-assess then to stay at 365 or change to 52.
However so far, so good (I'm only 2 behind :) )
I started this with the Nikon D800, a couple with the Q, and am now continuing with the mighty K-3.

Here is the link to our group on Flickr:

Thats it! Done! No going back now!!

I'm officially a Pentaxian again (tho I still have my Q and K100d)

Still haven't chosen my first lens; but it seems I still have my old 50mm f2 and Sigma 70-300.

I have one of these and love it (came off an old Praktica too!). It probably doesn't 'rate' well because its not pin-sharp across the entire frame (and its not an ltd prime :/).
BUT if you want a 50mm with real character, this is it right here.

(Nice shots from the mighty old K100d too!)
