Is the Pentax K5 still a good option ?

I've just bought a K5 with under 3k shutter actuations as a pre-emptive replacement for my K30 which is beginning to show signs of having the aperture block failure. Given the high regard it seems to be held in on the forum, for $AU 380 I didn't think i could go too far wrong. It should arrive this week.

I recently sold some gear as well as getting the $200 rebate for my Canon Pixma Pro 10 that I bought during a $299 Black Friday deal last year.

So I decided to order the Pentax 08 lens this morning. It is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow so I'm looking forward to taking it for a test drive this weekend.

This is Darby, my nemesis. He believes that the spots of light reflected from watches, cellphones, and especially cameras, have magical properties and must be followed everywhere.

Jake the pug. Skippy loves him.

Mo the pug, who's not a fan of cameras.

Snoop the chow mix. Big dogs love slobbering all over his perfect black coat.

Nalya the wolf mix. She's really nice, but sometimes she starts howling, and it sets the entire park off.

Charlie the Great Dane. He's a big 'un.

Quinn, who likes stealing other dog's Chuckit balls. Then again, there aren't many dogs who don't enjoy doing that.

I don't know this one's name, but it was his first time at the dog park.

The Big Three SLRs - with Pentax

We all know Pentax - Ricoh have produced some highly competitive DSLRs over the past few years.

But its still a pleasant surprise and good news to see a Pentax DSLR camera right up there along-side Canon and Nikon on a 'front cover', targeted at a wider audience. So I thought it worthwhile posting a photo of the magazine cover I saw today in the check-out aisle of our local food supermarket.

Ok. So we imply from this that Pentax is weak and a continually weakening company that makes mediocre gear and doesn't develop innovative products. Now can we talk about the good things ahead and the possibilities in the K-3, 645D II and GXR?

My suggestion to Pentax: make a camera with a Tamagotchi inside that if you don't go out to take pictures at least two times a day it saddens and becomes ill. I bet it will boost your sales a lot and will improve the pictures of the buyer much more than a full frame camera.

Carryspeed (Swivi) LCD Viewfinder on the Q

Got the chance today to work on attaching the Carryspeed LCD Viewfinder to my Q. Here are the product links:

ViewFinders | Carry Speed Store
Swivi HD DSLR LCD Universal Foldable Viewfinder Version II SWIVI

Before I begin, I must give credit where credit is due. I followed along with a post on dpreview by member brandrx who pioneered this. I simply followed along with what he did first here.

The main problem with attaching this viewfinder to the Q is the small body size of the camera. The first obstacle is getting the height correct. If you attach the viewfinder as it comes, it is too high by about 3/4". So a spacer is needed under the Q body to bring the body up so the viewfinder will cover the screen correctly. brandrx linked to this plate on ebay that worked for him:

Aluminium Quick Release Plate Arca Swiss Compatible | eBay

Since I have an assortment of arca-swiss plates already, I took a look at them and found one that has the 1/4" threaded socket in it like the ebay one. This one is from a Camdapter Prostrap that I had as an extra. Here is a link to the Prostrap from which I harvested the plate:

Camdapter - Arca Adapter

Getting started, I attached the plate to the Q. It was a little trial and error to see which orientation I needed to have the 1/4" threaded socket since it is offset from the center. This shows the way I have installed that worked correctly:

Next I attached the bottom plate from the viewfinder. Then when checking for clearance with my Fotodiox adapter, I wasn't able to install it because of the tripod foot on the adapter hitting the plate - so off it came. And am I glad I did remove it! I've never used it since I am using lenses that have their own tripod foot, but after seeing how tiny the attaching screws were, and how little they grabbed into the adapter, I'm sure glad I never tried to use it.

Finished putting the rest of the viewfinder together and it looked good. I had a perfect view of the screen and it was tight against the camera. Then when I went to test it out, I found that while I could see the left function button next to the OK button (flash button), I couldn't get my finger on it because the body of the viewfinder was blocking it enough I couldn't get my fat finger to push the button. I use this button a lot on the Q since I will go back and forth using both the 2 second timer and remote - I need to be able to push that button. I couldn't adjust the viewfinder any more to the left. There are 2 thumbscrews on the bottom of the unit where the left/right adjustment is. For a quick fix, I simply removed one of the thumbscrews which allowed plenty of movement farther to the left.

OK - back on the tripod for another test - success!

Because the viewfinder fits nice and tightly against the LCD screen (it does have a rubber gasket around the rim), I don't feel that having only the one thumbscrew holding the left/right adjustment will hurt anything.

When installing the 2 plates, it is possible to have them too far forward that the Fotodiox adapter will hit the plate. In my final installation, I attached the adapter first, then when installing the plates made sure they were just short of touching the adapter.

I am very happy with the viewfinder. I didn't realize how nice it is to view the screen and the help with manual focusing. I am a regular viewfinder guy from years past, and hesitated a long time before buying a Q mainly for the fact of the lack of a viewfinder. This has made a big difference for me. Now on to my next problem....I like to use my Q with the adapter and long lenses of course, but I also like to use the native lenses for a nice little walk around camera. Now the switch back and forth will take a couple minutes and an allen wrench - I think I am seeing why some folks are getting that second Q now.......

Landscape Summer in the Australian Alps

Our "alps" in Australia are a bit low and rounded by everyone else's standards but there you have it. This is typical summer scenery near the treeline in the Australian Alps. This is taken from the summit track of Mt Feathertop, along the Razorback towards Mount Hotham with Molly's Hill, Battery and Diamantina Spurs in the foreground. Wonderful country.

It loses a bit on screen, I think. The scale is deceptive. When I see it my memory fills in details the pixels hide. I might make a decent-sized print and see how it looks.

K100D: Second Life

My old Pentax K100D begins its second life today, after sitting and gathering dust since 2008. I sent it out on "extended loan" to my favorite dancing girl, accompanied by the gift of a book on beginning SLR photography. I passed them to her today when we gathered at an old folks home to put on a show for the residents. As soon as she got a few minutes break between her appearances on stage she ran back to the dressing room and brought it out to try her hand at a few shots of the others dancing.

She is fifteen now, and has been dancing since she was about four years old and now does it with the same effortless grace with which birds fly. She is the only one who has shown an interest in using a camera and I sometimes take a spare along or let her use mine for a few minutes during rehearsals and she shows great promise for being able to spot shots.

Well blow me down... a prompt and gracious reply from Margaret.

Hello, Wayne
I'm not sure why I omitted to include Pentax lenses in my lists but it could be because I almost never get to review Pentax lenses, whereas I am often offered Sigma lenses, which come from the same distributor. I have lots of information and product images of lenses from Sigma, Olympus, Tamron, Canon and Nikon (which I review from time to time), but almost none on Pentax lenses. There's no image library for them, either locally or overseas, so it's a hassle to get product shots.
All our buyer's guides (including this Insider) are prepared close to the magazine's deadlines to ensure the information is as up to date as possible. Any delays in sourcing information and/or product shots from suppliers can mean certain products aren't included.
As you will know from reading our reviews, I am generally very impressed with the Pentax cameras I see; most recent models have been nominated as Editor's Choices. I am in no way influenced by advertising support, as you can see from the number of Panasonic and Sony reviews I do despite no support for either our magazine or website from either company. I'm prepared to spend the time to provide our readers with the information they need to make wise purchases.
I will endeavour to improve my access to Pentax lenses when I speak with the people from C.R. Kennedy's towards the end of this month. Aside from that, my apologies for my omissions; I'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I've replied, offering her access to my FA and DA lens collection for review if it helps, and also suggesting that if product shots are hard to come by, I'm sure this forum would be more than willing and capable to supply some.

Most of us will hardly use our current kit to its full potential.
If you want to know what your current lenses can do, have a look at the https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/lens-clubs/45425-kit-lens-club.html and see what you can be capable of as well.
