Pentax K-5 Auto focus not working on Prime/Constant aperture lenses

I could hear the motor struggling to focus when I have the prime/constant F lenses. Not sure what the camera term is for the noise it makes when trying to focus is but I could hear the motor like it's trying to focus.

I tried the Pentax SMC DA Lens K - 50mm - F/1.8 and Sigma 70-200 F/2.8 on my Pentax K-5 Body. The camera Auto Focus doesn't work. I can shoot in Manual mode though. I tried the DA 18-135mm WR Lens on the Pentax K5 and the Autofocus works. Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I really appreciate it. I tried all the mentioned troubleshooting steps but no joy. I really love the lens though. I tried taking some shots in manual and the pictures are stunningly gorgeous. Can't wait to get the replacement and see how it turns out. Thanks again team! Cheers!

SMC Pentax DA50mm f 1.8 - Auto focus hunting issue

Just had my new lens, Pentax SMC DA 50mm f1.8 delivered. I tried it on my K-5 and noticed that the lens is struggling to autofocus and it keeps hunting. Tried in Auto, Av, P and Sv. The manual focus seems to be working.

I tried an 18-135mm WR lens to eliminate that it's not the camera body and I was able to take pictures without autofocus issues. So I am sure the camera body is working.

Any help would be much appreciated. I want to make sure it's faulty before returning.

I went through the same experience. When I told the rep clearly that I do not give him the consent to cancel my order, he went ahead and placed me on hold for a minute and got back to me saying that he went ahead and cancelled the order because his supervisor told him to do so. He also told me that he can place the order one more time for me for $249.00.

I understand that sale price was a mistake but clearly Ricoh/Pentax is not dealing with it in a professional manner. There was no apology of any kind for the price mishap throughout my interaction with the rep or his supervisor. Taking it out on the customer is just plain unprofessional.

This is beyond ridiculous. I just got off the phone from Pentax and the supervisor mentioned that they are cancelling all the orders and that on one's getting the lens for $119.95 sale price. No apology, nothing. The representative was just plain rude. My first very bad customer service experience from Pentax.

Once you add the lens to your cart (The screen where it says PROCEED TO CHECKOUT), choose to close the browser tab, a pop window from Pentax flashes a message offering free shipping for purchase of over $99. Click the link and the shipping fee vanished. So DA 50mm f/1.8 for $119.95 flat. Woot!

I just got a reply from them regarding the grip. It's NOT the OEM grip but a third party one.

Thanks so much Woody. Will be shooting the Hot Chicken Festival tomorrow in Nashville, TN. Hoping to get some good shots.
I tried shooting with my K-5 on a kayak trip but had some issues with AF. It may've been my mistake. Will get to know tomorrow. Thanks again!

Nothing really loud. Just a small click sound for a second. Should it be silent while you are turning it ON?

I just have a quick questions. When I turn ON my K-5, it makes a sound. Like a screeching sound, for a second. Is that normal?

Thanks again for all your replies. A proud Pentaxian with ZERO regrets.

OMG. That was my first reaction when I opened the box and put together the components. K-5, DA 15-135 WR lens and the OEM grip is a killer combination. The shutter is so silent. Can't wait to go on my hiking trip this weekend and enjoy this beauty.

Thanks so much everyone for your kind and encouraging words. I have ZERO regrets now and I am so glad I made this purchase. Thank You!!

You all have no idea how much I appreciate each and every one of your comments. Thanks so much for taking time to reply this post. Your words gave me more than the required encouragement.

I was at work and since it was a Signature Required package I had to go to UPS office to pick it up. I have the box sitting in front of me right now but I got two trail marathons, one on Sat and one on Sun. If I open the box, it would be tough to put it down. Just got about three hours to catch some sleep and a 3 hour drive to the race. I promise to post the pics by Sun night.

Thanks for restoring my faith in Pentax :). Petaxians are awesome.

I started my hobby with Pentax K-x and just placed the order for a Pentax K-5 and DA 18-135mm WR lens (When the price was still low), original grip etc. With the news that the Pentax lens price has shot up and reading through the comments about people wanting to jump off Pentax boat. Not sure whether I made the right choice and whether I should be regretting for making the upgrade.

I really love Pentax but reading the comments from Pentax veterans on the price increase is making me think otherwise.

Any words of encouragement?

Lens suggestions for Pentax K-5

@boriscleto Thanks for your suggestion.
@jatrax I guess I'll go with the 18-135mm WR. Reviews sounds great and it would be a great carry around where I don't have to worry about it. Thanks for suggestions on Wide angle and Zoom lens.
@RioRico I do race photography and sometimes I have to stop shooting when it starts raining. I guess with WR, I don't have to worry about it. Thanks for your advice.

Weird but B&H increased the price of the 18-135mm WR back to its original price $529.95 (It was showing the revised price $459.95 until yesterday) :(

Lens suggestions for Pentax K-5

It's been just over a year since I joined the Pentax family and I am so glad that I did. My Pentax K-X delivered exceptionally well. Though I was just taking pictures with my kit lens, some of the photographs turned out so well that it got published in magazines. Now it's time to let go off my K-X and upgrade to K-5. Just wanted to make use of the low price.

I am an outdoor person. Ultra running is my sport besides rock climbing and ultra biking. I travel a lot and do Travel Photography as well. So weather seal is very important to me. I have already placed the order for Pentax K-5 along with Pentax original grip. I need help in choosing the lens. DA 18-135 WR seems to be a good choice for a walk around lens but are there are any alternatives from Sigma or Tamron?

I am planning to choose one lens for now but would love to add a wide angle lens for landscape photography and a Ultra zoom lens for Wildlife.

Your suggestions would be much appreciated. Planning to place the order by today. Many thanks!

Pentax K-x gets stuck

It was my bad. It was the other way round though. I was able to shoot at 55mm but not at 18mm. I also tried removing the lens and placed it in continuous shooting mode and noticed that it was getting stuck. But when I tried shooting it when the lens after cleaning the contacts it started working good. I guess I'll wait for a few more weeks and see how it acts before I decide to send it to Pentax.

I also tried a 135mm prime lens on the camera and was able to shoot without any issues.

My batteries are fresh and fully charged. I cleaned the contacts on my lens and tried once again and it seems to be working good. I'll try shooting more and see how it behaves. Thanks so much for your response Osmo. I really appreciate that.
