Much appreciate everyone's input. I'll look for the 18-250mm then. But Ash I value and respect your input, and certainly will keep it in mind. I don't get my per diem for about a month yet, so I have some time to let this stew. Thanks much to all for your time and input.

I'm not sure I'm tracking with you - are you talking about the Tamron 18-200mm, zoom super wide angle f/3.5-6.3 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens for Pentax?

I'm fending off LBA, but having run across these two, I have to wonder if I shouldn't drop a bit of my per diem after this trip and add one of them to my kit.
Any suggestions? Both seem highly rated, no unfavorable characteristics. I'm leaning more to the Tamron 28-300mm, but I don't have a Tamron yet, but have three Sigma lenses and am very pleased with them.
Appreciate any comments and experiences with either of these two lenses.

I don't get back to the DC area until August 05, not sure where and how I can get to one of the sites before this is over. I'm not really interested in driving a long ways just to see, but I may have to.

Yep, I'd like to see one, too, and enter the contest to win one!
Did I read correctly that the K-30 has a battery adapter for AAs like the K-r?

I received an e-mail from Pentax announcing several demos of the K-30 around the country. Sounds great, would love to see one in person, but looking at the locations, seems like some very odd venues - not the kinds of places you're likely to find potential interest (e.g., Cody, WY?! not that there's anything wrong Cody, of course. . . )

i duct-taped a small key ring to the end of it, and then attached a carabeener to the ring. I have a hook in my camera bag that holds the remotes (yes, I have two, because I thought I lost the first one! :D)

yes, I noticed, they all line up at the very base of the batter's box.
I had a nice evening and enjoyed the game and taking pictures. But one thing I did carry with me: the 1st baseman wasn't real respectful during the singing of the national anthem, no hand on heart, didn't remove his hat, acting as though this was a waste of time for him. Poor form I thought. I'm not a great patriot, but I did serve for 20 years. I figure if you want to be a professional sportsman, it's one of the prices you pay, regardless of your own beliefs. You're a role model, that comes with the job.
But that's OK. He argued with the Ump at the end of the 5th, when he got struck out to close the inning. The ump promptly threw him out of the game.
I wonder if the ump saw the same thing I did. ;-)

I decided to try my hand at some sports photography last week. I attended a minor-league game, the Potomac Nationals vs. Wilmington. The last photo was at ISO 3200. Comments welcome!

I have a small backpack (full disclosure: it has a Canon logo on it), but it's very comfortable and I get a lot of stuff in it. I use it when I travel. I can pack a lot o' stuff: K-5 w/18-135, K-r w/Sigma 17-70, Sigma 28 and 10-20, Pentax 55-300, plus some filters, batteries, and it as a sleeve big enough for a notebook (paper-type) and a mini notebook. If I really want, it has straps on the sides and bottom to strap a Manfrotto smaller tripod and a folding seat to sit and take pictures.
It's green and black and it can be had for about $40.
Can't complain - had it for over a year and it's still going strong. Well constructed and very tough.

Strangely enough, a few years ago when the WWII Memorial opened, I went with my dad to see it. I had a tripod with me and when I opened it up to get a portrait together, a Park Ranger approached and informed that it was illegal to "erect a structure" on National Park property.
After some polite inquiry as to how one could consider a tripod a structure, I packed up and moved on. Later I asked another Park Ranger if he had the same interpretation. Curiously, I didn't get the same response.
I guess that doesn't apply now to "Occupy Wall Street." But maybe they don't have any tripods in their camps. . . .

I have the SIgma 17 - 70mm and although I've not used it extensively thus far, I've been pleased thus far with it's performance. It's not that expensive, relatively speaking. JMT

Just curious, what level of legacy compatibility does Canon have with its bodies and array of lenses?
NOT that I'm looking to switch. . . . just curious

I tried out my new Sigma 10-20mm at Great Falls last Saturday. Note the kayaker in the 1st attempting to run the rapids upstream.
Then headed to an R/C plane club's open house. Those little planes move fast and are not easy to capture!
Finally, a pretty lady that waited on us at an icebreaker yesterday evening. Tough lighting in the restaurant where she works.

I finally got my lens on Friday, and I tried it out at Great Falls Park in Virginia. I'm quite pleased with its initial performance. Just need more time to get familiar with.

I just discovered this thread today. I ordered the 10-20mm on Monday, if I can beat the UPS man home this afternoon, will have it on my K-5 ASAP. Can't wait to try it out after seeing the great photos here.
