X90 Movie Mode

Hello Anton

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience.

It's been a while since I was on the forum.
I have been working through the user manual and am pleased with the results I get.
With respect to the movie mode the ISO would appear to be fixed.
I have accepted that in movie mode under indoor lighting the best results are by setting AWB manually.
There's not anything can be done about the graininess without additional indoor lighting in movie mode but then really it's a stills camera. For movie mode I have started investigating movie cameras that work well in poor lighting conditions.... it's a mean task!
The Finepix S1500 I had, may have had a better movie mode but did not produce the quality of still images especially macro mode images of the X90.

I am just enjoying the X90 now and not rushing.
Everytime I refer to the manual I learn something new.

The most important lesson I learnt when purchasing a new camera is don't sell your current one in a hurry. You may be selling a feature that works especially well in certain circumstances that even a camera of the same model, may not produce the same results.
Possibly a unique tolerance thing!:o

When I choose to purchase again, I won't be selling my X90 in a hurry, that's for sure!

Thanks for the links and reminder about the monthly competition.
I was making an effort to enter the monthly competion because it takes me out of my comfort zone but have been distracted .......
also ............

It's fun

All other settings are redundant from then on!

I cannot at this early stage consider myself to have outgrown the X90 camera as I only purchased it recently.

What I have learnt from the discussion here is that in the world of bridge cameras it produces competitive picture quality at a reasonable price and that I have to investigate all it's features in more detail to get the best from it.

Yesterday
I was looking at Panasonic Lumix and Olympus Bridge and Digital SLR cameras.
Some of them having manual focusing.

I learnt that the manual focus on/off setting was not accessed at the push of a button but rather via a maze of menu navigation.

They were excellent cameras and I have concluded that if going digital you have to accept it's a software maze of settings that have to be mastered to get results from any Digital camera purchase before being able to separate the wheat from the chaff features that produce useful and professional results.

Now that I have that all out of my system I'll spend more time concentrating on what I have .....

The Pentax X90.

Steve I think I will be keeping the camera.
I have picked up a few tips in this topic, the important ones being... read the instruction book.... and experiment.

I don't think I can experiment with the movie feature, it all seems to be automatic, so I'll need to work out what I will do there.... maybe get a second hand S1700 which I know did what I wanted.

Anton Magus
I think Anton that is what I have to get used to... the "Catches"!
For every varibale setting other settings are fixed.
I need to work out the advantages, disadvantages why things are done like this.

Anton Magus
Anton if I had opened the sash window, he would have been off like the wind.
As it was, he didn't hang around to be photographed by an amateur :o

Philoslothical
I have taken some great photographs with the X90 for sure.
I think I need to work out why the camera manufacturer designs the camera with so many Fixed/Automatic setting combinations which to me seem a little contrived when all settings could be variable making a good camera great and fully flexible to user experimentation without limitation (well, within the parameters of the adjustments provided).

Thanks for the information regarding RAW and directing me to look at the Panasonic Lumix

The advice and opinions from everyone it's much appreciated.

:)

Thanks for your comments.
Since posting I did experiment with the ISO setting and as you explain found the results grainy if used to counter poor lighting.

Focusing With The X90
I saw a squirrel in the garden eating bread.
I thought I'd take a photograph of it through a bedroom window.
First on automatic but no matter how much I zoomed in and out the camera did not focus well.
I took a picture anyway, image was out of focus, no surprise
(The window might be the problem here but the focusing seem unreliable outside too)
I had an old 35mm SLR Practika with a 135mm zoom lens that could handle this type of photograph.

I then tried manual focus, but it was unsatisfactory too, seems very limited.

Movie Mode - Recording 8mm Cine Standard 8 Film

The first time I paid a company to convert a film.
The results were disappointing.

Although I mentioned above I was dissapointed with the FinePix 1700
I was actually happy with the movie feature when recording old family cine films.
Surprisingly the FinePix did a great job of it.
I edited, added captions, sound and personalised it.
Great results, when compared to the work done for me.
That aside!

The Pentax X90
The results I got were poor and again on automatic or manual the focusing on the cine screen was unsuccessful and the camera display image jittered which I did not get with the FinePix.

Now going back a step, I was not happy with the FinePix Macro.... hence I looked and spent more on the X90 having seen macro images taken by one.
What I overlooked was that the sacrifice seems to be the incorporated movie feature. (and the focus issue which I don't know what to make of)

X90 Summary
The display is grainy.... make it hard to determine what the picture will turn out like.
Works best in daylight
Not a great light sensor for automatic.... indoor
Limited manual focus.
Unreliable focusing..... can't pinpoint this issue as it should be fine in automatic.
Poor movie feature..... indoor.... manual white balance setting gets best overall .
Great Macro 1cm feature.

Another Camera
I think I am looking for another camera already but not sure I'll get all the features I seek. Something always gives when cramming two technologies together. Still Camera & Movie Camera....

If I could have the combined good features of the Pentax X90 and FinePixS1700....

Well I'd have my cake and eat it!

Thanks again

Thanks for the comments.
Join a club, go to a class.... both great suggestions.
Yes, I do need to sit down with the instruction book again!

When I purchased the camera I read it cover to cover.... but really I need to absorb it!
:)

Anton Magus Wrote:

Yes, ISO Setting.... I have never experimented with them....I am not even sure what changes when the ISO setting is changed.
On film it I think it was to do with the speed of film.....in a digital camera I would have thought it obsolete or contrived?

Thanks again for your comments guys.
I will stick with the X90 until I have a better understanding.
If I can figure it out, then I will know what I want when upgrading.
I think!

II am pleased with the results I am getting from the X90 Bridge Camera.
It is so much better than the Fine Pix 1600 I had previously.
Do you know of any others that may improve from the X90?

The movie feature is fine but limited when indoors.
I find it can record be grainy images.
But then, most would argue purchase a camcorder for movies!
It's convenient for the sort of thing I like to do.
The closeup stills are taken with the macro again.
You'll see what I mean about the movie quality at the beginning.
From what I've read in the manual the movie options are limited.

With respect to photography, cameras and getting good results, I have a a lot to learn. I have a good idea about seeing what I want to capture, but lack the knowledge of how to work out how to get the best results from all the camera features available.

Thanks again for your help

Hi Everyone

Yes, there is a lot of light comes in that bay window.
I have heard of the flash being used into sunlight but don't really understand the
flash technology and how to use it correctly, other than if it's dark, flash!

Thanks for your interest in my questions.
I am sorry to say but I deleted the photos as they were dissapointing and got everyone to move to the other side of the room!
It wasn't until after the delete event I thought of posting a question!
:o

The reason I asked was to find out if there was something I could have done economically to avoid the issue as I am only using the X90

I like the X90, I have taken some nice pictures with it but wonder if it's more a general snapshot camera than a photographers camera, but...
where do you start!

Maybe I need something a little more professional which would give me more variables to experiment with.

I have only had the X90 a short while it's likely I don't know how to get the best from it.

Thanks Steve for posting the cat images :)

Here's a photo I took of a thistle with the X90 macro feature.

Thanks Again

Hi

I took a photo of our family sitting in a bay window.

The light coming in the window caused the resulting photo to overexpose.

Using manual mode I tried to use the flash to compensate for the light coming in the window but the results were poor.

I also experimented with different aperture and speed combinations the results I got were varied between overexposed underexposed and silhouetted images.

Question
Can anyone give me some suggestions where I might be going wrong and how I might have better success?

Thanks In Advance.

Hello Adam

Thanks for the reply.
I followed your instruction but had no success.
I tried entering the name of a month and then left it blank for a search for any month over the last 6 months, still no joy.

I have attached an image of my search criteria.

Are all images kept or are they eventually deleted for space?

Please advise further?

Edit
Sorry, the attached image is much bigger than intended.

Hello HEEGZ

Thanks for sharing your learing experience with me.

Yes you have it.... I am at this point reluctant to go Digital SLR due to the price.

You Wrote:
I had a very old film SLR years ago, so your jogging some old grey matter!
Well that's a great starting point for me too, thanks.
I'll look at these aspects first.

You Wrote:
I would agree with that. It's best I get familiar with the X90 first, well I just got it :), then I'll be able to work out what restrictions / limitations I have and be able to make an educated descision later.

Thanks again for sharing.

I like your macro shots, it's the clarity of detail that's impressive?
Did you take them on the K-7 or Canon?

I wouldn't know where to start when going from Bridge Camera to Digital SLR.
What did the K7 offer for you, apart from the the ability to change lenses to improve picture quality, that was the deciding factor for you to go for the K-7?

They are great Macro shots.
I can understand your interest in this type of photograph, it captures my interest too!
Excuse the pun :)

It was the 1cm macro feature that attracted me to the X90.

It's the clarity of detail that's amazing, I like your photographs>
Were these images taken on the K-7 or Canon?

When moving from a bridge camera to Digital SLR. The K7 looks like a great camera...... but there's a big price difference between the K-7 and X90.

My problem when considering a Digital SLR is what do I get for the price difference that makes a difference?

Hello HEEGZ

Thanks for the welcome and pointing me in the right direction.

White balance.... I should have known that! :o

Initially I tried the preset Tungsten setting although it improved it was still marginally out with a bias still to orangy / yellow.

Then I tried the manual setting using a sheet of white A4 paper.

What a difference.... great.... this will be my preferred choice for setting white balance indoors.

Further Advice
If you don't mind me asking..... are there any nice feature on the X90 that you would consider worth me investigating?

Thanks Again and in advance.

Hello

When I tried the movie mode indoors, with my new Pentax X90 it produces an underexposed orangy/yellow movie image.

Can anyone advise how I can improve the indoor recorded movie quality under:-

1. Normal room electrical lighting conditions.

2. How do I go about improving indoor lighting conditions (without breaking the bank) to provide more successfully recorded video with respect to lighting conditions.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
