Pentax DA 18-135 or limited primes?

Don't ditch the prime, as mentioned earlier, having the primes will force you to become a better photographer as they will make you think about having to move around to create better compositions. I have the 21mm and 43mm primes and the 18-135... They are different tools for different situations. I like the 18-135 and it is super convenient and it is weather sealed (which is nice when you are on a trip and you aren't sure what will happen with the weather) but I prefer using the two primes. They are just so fun to use. An added benefit is when using the primes, you get to laugh at the Canikon crowd with their giant heavy lenses. I do this regularly at the Bronx Zoo.

Used tripod legs

Both nice solid choices. I'm not one for a joystick head but I know a lot of people like them. Plus, you got a good price - any decent tripod under $200 is a great deal.

KEH has a pretty good return policy, if I recall. You could always set it up indoors and shoot things in your home or aim out the window. If you have stairs you could try setting it up there to simulate a slope. I'll bet you are happy though.

Also, having a tripod that goes to eye level is nice since when you are on a slope, it will be closer to your eye. Many people don't like the center post - I don't use mine, I took it out. However, it is nice to have in there if you plan to shoot on a slope.

You do and you don't. My tripod doesn't get me to eye level. When I'm shooting landscapes - I tend to compose with live view and zoom in on the lcd to manually focus. In that situation, I don't mind.

Shooting anything, however, through the view finder, is a pain if it is more than a few shots. However, my back appreciates the lighter weight.

If you don't have a need for small and light, I'd go to eye level.

I'm a teacher and my school does community service projects. Earlier this year, I was supervising some maintenance work in Riverside Park. We were putting down hay to protect grass from runners who don't stay on the paths. Anyways, the weather was horrible - really bad. 38 degrees and raining. My pentax k5 shot through this with zero problems. I was completely unconcerned. I love that I don't have to worry about weather with a pentax. And it's a point that should be marketed more.

Pentax monochrome or Leica way

I don't think this is a wild suggestion - tons of photographer who shoot any of the major companies look at Leica products as very desirable but out of reach choices. If pentax were to make something that competed with a Leica M but cost say 1/5th of the M, I think it would sell. In a way, this idea is more consistent with Pentax philosophy than the release of a full frame camera - Pentax doesn't always try to compete, they try to innovate. Sometimes it flops, sometimes it doesn't - I think a Pentax M wouldn't flop.

K-30 Purchase Suggestions

I used to own the 18-135 and I really liked it - I sort of regret selling it although I'm ultimately happier with my current kit (DA*). Also, if it was me - I'd go used. I've bought all my gear used and I have no regrets.

You might be able to find a good deal on a combo from Adorama or B and H come holidays. Maybe score a bundle including a memory card and a few other accessories.

Why not a used k5? Just another idea... Prices have really come down and I can only imagine that used prices will continue to drop.

Finally, if you search youtube for "k30 camerastoretv" you'll find a pretty strong review on the k30. Fun to watch.

During a mild spat of organizing and cleaning the apt, I decided that my photo gear needed some attention as well.

Maybe more people can post pictures of their gear and maybe even their organizational systems (eg. bags, shelves, etc)?

Abstract First attempt at the Moon with decent equipment

Shot this about a half hour ago out in front of my apt building. A fair amount of light pollution - probably people who live in rural areas would call it heavy light pollution.

My question is can I do much better with this gear? My wife's parents live upstate so the next time I am up there I will give this another try - less light pollution, less pollution in general!

I've got a few others from the evening, maybe another is a tiny bit better but they all came out more or less like this.

Sigma 100-300mm f4 with Tamron Pz-AF MC7 2x TC on my K5. Shot tripod mounted, SR off, Mirror Lock up w/ remote, MF at infinity, center weighted metering, ISO 400, f7.1 (around f15ish w/ the tc?) 1/640
Cropped, converted to black and white, boosted exposure a tiny bit, added contrast, some sharpening, slight noise reduction.

looking for teleconverter to match the Tamron SP AF 70-200mm f/2.8

I'd like to suggest to the OP that instead of looking at the tamron to look at the sigma version of the 70-200mm as there are 1.4 and 2x teleconverters listed as compatible with the APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG / HSM and the APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX / HSM.

direct K-5 successor?

The K5 is a great camera, no need for you to wait and then spend a premium on a theoretical (although likely) successor. One thing that always strikes me reading these posts is how many people are shooting great photos with cameras that are sometimes a few generations old. Pentax makes a good camera and they have for a while.

I was basically about to suggest a similar setup. Remember, the tripod is always more stable without the center column extended!

Lens advice for theater/stage

I recently acquired the tamron and it has fast become one of my favorite lenses! Its fast and has great image quality. I've used it for both macro and tele applications.

And I wonder if you look hard enough you might find the tamron 70-200 f2.8 used. Its the least expensive f2.8 telephoto zoom for the k mount. Sigma has a 105mm f2.8 macro lens that could work?
