Beginner Q: Photographing very dark skinned people

I am a beginner, and would like some help with the following issue.

I have an african-american friend (male), with strikingly handsome looks. A very unique face, shall I say. If I want to photograph him with my kids, who are fairly fair in color, how should I calculate the correct exposure? What other suggestions could you offer on this issue of photographing a very light skinned person, with a very dark skinned person?

(I own a Pentax K-5 and two zooms, the 16-50mm and 50-135mm DA* lenses.)

Thank you,

Amit
