printing black and white photos

You can get really great black and white photos printed on an inkjet printer. I have an Epson Stylus Pro 3880. I tell Lightroom that the printer will manage the colors, then in the Epson set up menu, I select the Advance B&W option. I print on inexpensive photo paper I get at either Costco or Sam's until the photo is exactly what I want, then I print the final version on Ilford Gold Mono Silk, which was designed for black and white printing.

I took this photo a couple of years ago. I wasn't able to get the color right; it had a blue-green cast I couldn't get rid of. I think it was because I was in the shade of the pine tree when I took the picture. I converted it to black and white to get rid of the color cast.

I've only seen the embedded profile on TIFF files, created by either the Pentax software or Photoshop.

PEF vs DNG

I shoot in PEF and then convert to DNG in Lightroom. That way, I have the picture saved in both formats in case one of them becomes unsupported in the future. I shot a pixel shifted picture with my K1, and I noticed that the PEF is 167MB and the DNG is 109MB. The difference between the non pixel shifted for one of my photos is not as large: 45.3 MB for PEF and 40.5MB for DNG.

I shot my Spotmatic for 40 years before I bought my K7. I'm not upgrading to Kq1, I'm going home.

Spotmatic anniversary

When I bought my Spotmatic in 1970, I was also looking at the Nikon, but it was more expensive than the Pentax. I could have gotten a Nikkormat for the same price as the spotty, but the spotty was comparable to the full Nikon rather than the Nikkormat. I've never regretted the decision to go Pentax.

Don't worry, I'll take good care of it. The batteries that came with the camera were corroded (they were dated 81 on the package). The only 35mm film I had in the freezer is 2 rolls of slide film and about a dozen rolls of iso 800 print film, so I ran a roll of the print film. The only problem I have noticed is the frame counter doesn't work, but other than that, the camera worked fine.

It's an interesting story how I found the camera. The development where I live was having a community garage sale. I never go to garage sales, but my daughter and son-in-law decided to see what everyone had for sale. When they came back, they were having a discussion. My daugher said the the camera had the name Honeywell on the body, but my son-in-law said that the word started with the letter H but was not Honeywell. This peaked my interest, so I asked them what they were talking about, and they told me that my neighbor had a bunch of Pentax camera's for sale. We, of course, had to go check this out and learn who was right about the wording on the camera. It turns out they were both right; the word Honeywell was on the pentaprizim, and the word Heiland was on the body. Anyway, my neighbor had about a half-dozen Pentax cameras for sale, and at the back of the table was a box labeled MX. I picked up the box, and the price on it said "$100, never used". I told him to hold the camera for me, and I immediately went home and got $100 from my crap shooting fund, and rushed back to buy the camera.

Pioneer, it was over 40 years ago. I think I was at the east end of town looking west along the main street, but I don't recall where I was standing when I took the picture since I'm clearly above the street. I have three other images of this scene (I bracketed the shot); I'll scan them and post them.

When I saw that Pioneer was from Elko, Nevada, I had to post a reply. I lived in Elko from 1969-1971. This is a night scene of Elko I took in the fall of 1970 with my, at that time, brand new Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic.

RAW-- PEF vs DNG... difference?

I shoot in PEF. I copy the PEF files to a backup folder on my backup hard drive, then use Adobe Bridge to convert the PEF to DNG, which is the file I process in Adobe Camera Raw. That way, I have both versions available on two different hard drives.
