Thanks foxglove. I am no longer scared of my K100D histogram!

I found some great info regarding the differences between luminosity histograms vs. rgb histograms with the tutorials at

K100D histogram rocks!

Looks like it's time for me to eat my hat. :) Talk about opening mouth and inserting foot!

In another thread I mentioned that I wasn't a big fan of simple histograms and thought that the Pentax histogram on the K100D was probably just taking it's info from the green channel since that is what most closely matched my histogram in the gimp. I was completely wrong.

Many of the shots when looked at in the gimp's histogram closely matched the green channel, but not all. Time to research. (should have done this first!)

I opened up my images in Photoshop Elements 5, and it was immediately apparent that ALL my shots match the camera's histogram when Elements was set to look at the luminance channel.

Embarrased, but at the same time I love my K100D even more, now that I trust the histogram.

My apologies to all - enjoy that awesome histogram! I will now for sure.

Erm, time to eat my hat like I promised. :(

The Pentax K100D histogram rocks once I tried Photoshop Elements 5 and looked at the *luminance channel* - great match to the camera. New thread started so nobody misses my lunch... :)

Initially I was curious about why my camera's histogram didn't match up for the most part to what the histogram in the image editor was showing me.

The default in Gimp at least is to show a composite RGB histogram - so I changed the histogram mode in the editor to show only one channel and voila - only the green channel matched the camera's histogram - not exactly but it was the closest.

I guess this is because the green channel contains the most luminance info? Need help on this one, since I'm sure I've got it wrong..

Maybe I should just try and work with the histogram some more and find my comfort zone.

** EDITED UPDATE **
I was pointed to read some threads in another, erm, forum, and they said that the Pentax histogram is truly rgb. Ok, off for more experimenting. If this is so, I'll easily eat my hat in cyberspace. :)

Gridlines in firmware possible?

Thanks for the Katzeye tip! I popped by their site and will probably go nuts when the K100D screens are available.

When it comes to rule-of-thirds gridlines, I actually use them to kind of *avoid* making all my shots repetitious! I learned about that aspect of composition and kind of got locked-in mentally so to speak, so I actually use the lines to force myself to move somewhat away from them! :)

Fictitious K1000D possible - profitable?

You guys are right. There's probably not much cost-cutting you could do that would make it worthwhile compared to what's out there right now.

Sandwiching two shots together would be easy in Photoshop or Gimp using layers. Although honestly I've never done it.

Personal rant ahead! :)

Has anyone noticed that the histogram in the K100D is not really a composite, but is just the green channel? (like many other cameras)

Unless a camera's histogram is truly RGB, I found that worrying about trying to center up my histogram when it is only the green channel just distracts me - not to mention that it won't show when saturated reds / blues go into blowout conditions.

Makes me wonder about the K10's histogram. I guess I'll have to read up.

* soapbox mode off *

I always wondered if a totally stripped dSLR could make it in the marketplace - aka a digital version of the K1000?

I was thinking of maybe stripping an *ST DL and making it PASM only, ripping out other costly advanced features, and finally ending up with a very cheap but good quality body - great for learning, dipping your feet into dSLR's, or maybe taking it places where you would never risk it with a K10.

Seems like it would be a great gateway product to nudge fencesitters past the p&s models. Maybe they'd spend more on lenses than trying to get a K10 right up front. Hmmmm....

I guess you can tell I'm not in marketing! :)

Let the cost-cutting begin:
no top-panel lcd
Flash? Should it just be a hot-shoe?
Software - default image sharpening, saturation, etc with maybe just one hi/lo selection?
DA 18-55 kit lens with no lens hood?
What else?

tips for wedding photography

Good timing - I just got back from one a week ago as a guest.

My biggest tip would be to watch your white balance carefully and be sure not to use AWB. I forced it to cloudy on my point-n-shoot to make sure that the dresses were slightly warmish-white rather than the cooler blue-white during mid-day. Since the wedding was early afternoon with harsh overhead outdoor daylight, forcing the WB to cloudy really warmed things up - but to each his own.

As a guest I used my point-n-shoot and stayed well clear of the official photographer so I wouldn't be annoying or distract the subjects. I was able to get some nice unsuspecting off-angle posed shots unlike the official photographer who was just shooting straight-on. What a difference getting the sides of faces from about 45 degrees! The most important thing was to be inconspicuous and not annoying as a guest.

If rice-bags are thrown, keep one handy for the P&S if you didn't bring a mini-tripod. I travelled light to this one and wanted to be more sociable than concentrate totally on photography. No need for a beanbag...

In the end I should have brought my articulated swivel-screen point-n-shoot since it would have made it much easier to take those overhead shots when everyone hit the dance floor or performed the usual garter toss and whatnot.

I was actually glad I went light and wasn't the official or even unofficial photographer. Had a blast...

New GIMP image editor book!

I'm a fan of the GIMP image editor and run it on Linux, Windows, and OSX. (Not a guru, just your usual stuff - cropping, rescaling, levels, curves etc)

While there are a lot of tutorials on the web, and some older books, I was amazed to see a recent (2006) book about it:

"Beginning Gimp - From Novice to Professional" by Akkana Peck
Apress publishers

Although someday I'd love to see a Linux version of Photoshop - I'll keep dreaming...

I love my K100D, but I surely miss gridlines to help with my compositions and vertical/horizontal alignments. Even my point-n-shoot has them.

Is this something that could be added in firmware if I somehow pleaded with Pentax?

I'm not going to upgrade to a K10 just for gridlines.. :)

Kit-Lens persuades new buyer

I was in a chain-store the other day and got a rare chance to talk to a prospective new user teetering on a purchase based on the advice from the salesman.

One thing I find that salesmen never seem to point out about competing systems with kit lenses is that the front of a Pentax kit-lens (DA 18-55) doesn't rotate. This makes it a lot easier to use a polarizer, gradated filter, etc.

Although the other camera this person was considering was just as fine, I pointed out this "feature" of the Pentax kit lens and guess what? It was the final point needed to persuade them to go with Pentax *st/DL (on sale) since he already had some filters from years past.

When you lay these similar systems out on the counter, I am always amazed that this isn't pointed out.

Stupid Question re Lens Hoods

Wow, great info. I just picked up the DA 50-200 and wondered why it wasn't also petal-shaped like the one that came with the kit lens on my K100D. I guess I should be careful not to swap them since they both fit each other. Thanks!

Photography book recommendations

My all-time favorite book has to be "Understanding Digital Photography" by Bryan Peterson. published Amphoto Books.

Although I disagree with a couple of items, it finally got me to understand how best to use the proper aperture for either dSLR or point-n-shoot models.

There are loads of other books, but this one spoke my language I guess.

Just wanted to say hello and how impressed I am by the sense of community here on PentaxForums.com

After many years of inactivity with my lonely old K1000, I bit the bullet and picked up a K100D and am loving it! (Or perhaps it chose me, but that's another story. :)

See you on the forums!
