Action Best lens for firefighting shots

While water resistance is always a good idea, I honestly do not currently use a single water resistant lens. I've had more issues with rain than from any errant hose blasts. If you are close enough to get wet from a hose, you are too close LOL!

From one fire photographer to another, FAST, FAST, FAST. Especially with a K10D as you are limited to ISO 1600. Personally, I shoot with a 70-200 f/2.8 and until recently the 16-50 f/2.8 on a K-5. I'm now left with the kit lens for now on the wide end as my 16-50 had an accident, and it suffices. During the day, you will have no issues with your current setup. However at night, you are going to really struggle. I routinely shoot night fires and accidents at ISO 12,800, though 25,600 and 51,200 has been needed at times. Flash doesn't really work, as the reflective striping on the trucks and turnout gear tends to blow out. If you are looking to spend money, I'd really save up for a body that can offer much higher ISO performance.

The only other issue I've encountered is swapping lenses and missing shots. While something like an 18-250 would be great, and would work without issue during the day, at night it would just be too slow for that focal length, even at pretty high ISO's. Ideally, I would go with a two camera system, however my equipment budget is about zero right now.

Ahem, cough-cough, I've got a whole bag of that stuff, lol. Not on purpose of course. It was given to me, and I'm just too damned cheap to waste it. Stuff expired in 2006 and has been stored in an attic, car trunk, and now my basement.

Not everyone uses a tripod. And nope, no evidence. But let's see how it all pans out in a few years...

I've stated this many times before. HDSLR is more or less a "fad". No, it won't disappear from cameras, but all you nutjobs talking about how they are going to replace dedicated cams are just that, nutjobs. Serious pros (and eventually even the not so serious semi-pros and amateurs) will get tired of the stupidly expensive add-ons and poor ergonomics, and you will start to see large sensors in properly designed bodies that use interchangeable lenses at fair prices, and then you will see "the previously mentioned film studios are working with the camera makers as we speak to make this happen. This is something truly driven, right now, by the demand for it and those demanding it are helping engineer the implementation and the evolution of technology". Oh wait! That's already starting to happen.

At the time I purchased, it was less than $200 between them with and additional 4 year warranty on the Pentax. For me, it was worth it for the weather sealing and extra 1mm. Certainly not worth it for everyone though. There are differing opinions of which is better optically. Both are good of course, and not having the money to buy both to test for myself, I removed that from the equation.

Like I said, none of what they were doing made sense. We did have air blowing from the vents, but not cooled air. My wife gets fidgety just from having the defroster on in the car blowing warm air in her face. Doesn't matter that I can't see out the windshield. :D

I don't purchase lenses often, but when I do, I check the Pentax offereings first. If the 16-50 was this price at the time I bought it, you can bet Tamron would have gotten my money instead. As it is, they got my money for the 70-200 because Pentax doesn't even offer one. Both the FA 100 WR and the 18-135 WR were intriguing, but not given current prices. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, but if I were a newcomer now, I'd be looking at Canikon and blowing Pentax off completely.

If it did not work from the beginning, you should have just returned immediately. B&H gives you 30 days to figure out if the thing is damaged or not. No need to worry about guarantees or warranties. Sorry, but you dropped the ball by waiting.

Haven't done a lot of flying, but I do fly once every couple of years. The only problem I had was coming back to Philadelphia from New Orleans in 2000. Just as we hit the end of the taxiway and were the next plane in line for take off, word was given that PHI was shut down to due a landing plane there blowing out a tire. This coincided with GW arriving or departing in Philly for the Republican convention, so everything got way backed up, as getting one plane off the runway and getting GW moving was top priority. Anyway, it's August in New Orleans, and we are sitting on the end of the runway in the baking sun inside of an aluminum can with no air running. My wife, who has a tendency to get claustrophobic in crowds with little air circulation, starts to get a little panicky after about an hour. So we end up getting moved up to first class seats (without the service mind you) for the trip back home. Getting her some space and cooled down with cold damp rags did help for the next hour we sat on the runway. I understand not running the engines to keep the AC running, as that would be a huge fuel expenditure. I don't understand leaving us on the runway for 2 hours, as you've effectively just shut down part of the airport. Do you really mean to tell me that was a better option than moving us elsewhere, where we could quite possibly have hooked up to an APU and run the AC? It didn't even have to be at a terminal. I call the whole thing a push. The aircrew did what they could, but the people above them dropped the ball.

That's what I thought, but I'm not getting them. It did used to work though. I've tried unsubscribing and subscribing again, but with no luck. I will check with the rest to see how they have themselves setup, but I don't think any of them are getting notifications.

Exactly how does it work, and exactly what type of notifications should we be receiving? Currently no one in my Group is getting any type of notification for anything other than when sending mass PMs. New discussions are being made, but unless one is constantly checking the Group page, there is no way of knowing they are there. We are not a very active Group, but this helps make it less so.

Battery Grip K-20

There have been occasional little oddities with the grip. Nothing too major though. My first one had a touchy ON/OFF switch and shutter button. I was able to adjust it some, but it still wasn't 100%. You may just have a little too much, or not enough, play in your switch. First make sure your dials aren't between detents, as suggested above, because that is the cause of 99% of issues with the grip. Then the next time it doesn't fire, see if wiggling the button a bit gets it to work. In my case, it just wasn't always hitting the contact inside. If so, some adjustment inside is needed. As an aside, also check the pins that make contact with the body and see if any are sticking (one should rest lower than the others but they should all compress and spring back easily).

You may be right, but how does it perform compared to a full sized FF? Those are meant to be pretty damned fast. Is the Sony?

Just a guess, but larger sensor = more heat = more room needed for heat dissipation. Not to mention the extra processors and memory they tend to throw in them.

Was out at lunch this past Sunday. The restaurant hosts a classic car meet up. While I'm sitting there eating, I look out the window and see a guy shooting what looks like a Pentax, maybe an ME. So I wander on out when I'm done, chat the guy up a bit, and sure enough it is a Pentax. It turned out to be a very pristine K1000 with a 28mm.
