Thank you everyone! Really appreciate the compliments!

And I have both harddrives - the external and the laptop harddrive, the latter of which was doing the clicking (a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320 GB) - safely put away for when I discover someone who can attempt to recover the RAW files. Oh, I forgot to mention, my New Zealand vacation was kept in my deployment folder on both drives, thus being corrupted as well. I learned that when I was going to submit photo number 15 to Nat Geo's current Travel Photography contest.

Ah, another Sapper - does the thought of pounding pickets give you nightmares? :D

No, he was not equipped to make the decision at all. But that is just what precedes a promotion, right? :hmm:

Again, thank you all for the incredibly warm regards - the project has been a tremendous honor, and I am very proud of the article in the OP. By my count as of this posting, there were 514 views/downloads of the article .pdf. (If you hover over it, the view count will appear) Awesome.

I never shoot video. I'd wish they'd drop video altogether and improve the photography side of things (or at least drop the price since no video), but I'm probably in the extreme minority.

Am I the only one who wished that they would just remove video capabilities from DSLR's altogether?
I wish it was a feature that was treated as a bonus or best effort, as Im getting miffed over the amount of camera's that get marked down for poor video capabilities. Fine, they aren't great for video, but if they take pin sharp pictures, then does it really matter, and if it does, then get a dedicated videocam

Im guessing you can tell I have never used video on a DSLR, though strangely I have hours and hours of the stuff shot with various mobile phones, but have never chosen a phone based on video capabilities as I see that as a bonus too

Again choices and blame....weapons bought by muslims used to kill muslims to enforce muslim sharia laws, and fight out muslim squabbles, again international customers pay for oil, instead of using the oil money to feed and provide for their people the muslim leaders use it for violence, use the violence to control their people, then lay blame on everybody but themselves and the lack of separation between church and state, means it is all done through mosques.
also there are a lot of soviet and chinese weapons being bought and used...
It is a homegrown problem, and the solution starts when people like you stop using propaganda to divert blame from where it belongs take responsibility. The most peaceful, least painful solution to Islamic extremism is to have moderate Islamists take up arms against their own religious and political oppressors. Stop blaming others. To the moderate muslims in the middle east I say: the more extremists you kill on your own, (both physically and ideologically) the less likely you'll ever see a foreign army on Islamic soil.
Don't blame the people selling the guns. If your leaders were asking to buy food and agriculture equipment, hospital equipment, water desalinization plants, and other things to improve your daily lives, we would happily sell them that too. Trade is a supply and demand process... your leaders asked for weapons, that is what we sold them...

it's not the weapons that kill people it's the people holding the weapons that kill people.
put the gun down, it won't kill anybody.
take the gun from the fanatic, and he'll keep trying to kill you.
so how do you reduce the number of fanatics? you preach peace and disarm them, kill any that won't disarm. Not an easy or quick process, but better than having a foreigner come in and do it for you, because you did nothing.

To the avearge muslim in the middle east I'd say this:
in my church and my country this is considered bad parenting:

and you're gonna blame somebody half way around the world for all your problems when you could have bought your kid a bicycle?
that photo was from the 70's... yesterdays generation brainwashed into violence and murder is now raising this generation of kids...
I was riding a bicycle while your religious leaders, political leaders and parents brainwashed you. I wasn't your enemy then, and my little boy outside on his bicycle isn't your enemy now. If you come over here, blowing stuff up, killing people, then yes, I'll vote for any government policy that keeps your violence off our soil.

Macro Once in a lifetime shot. Fruit Fly Laying an Egg
Posted By LightSpeed

Hello,
At first I thought this was a Gnat because of the tiny size. She's probably 1/ 20 the size of a regular house fly.
If not even smaller than that.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the little ball exiting the rear of the Fruit Fly was suspended in mid air.
If I lived to be a million years old I could probably never get this again.
The amount of time it takes for the egg to exit the rear of the fly and hit the leaf has to be measured, like several thousands or maybe even a millionth of a second.

This particular fly, according to Wiki, measures slightly smaller than 1/8 of an inch. So scaling, the little ball from the rear of the fly to the leaf must be........like really freggin close.
The time it would take to drop and hit the leaf is ...........infinitesimal.

Anyway , enough of that. The imgage was captured using Pentax K5, 25mm kenko extension tube, Pentax 100mm Wr Macro, topped off with a Raynox dcr-250 and Pentax AF160 ring flash.
It's a once in a lifetime shot.

Yet does not a device which contributes so many deaths and countless injuries bear investigation toward finding safer alternatives? What about an effective mass transit system operated by trained and monitored professional operators.

The point is... the tool is not the real problem. The problem lies in humans who are greedy or careless or impared or simply tired. Solve the human problem and the problems with the tools will take care of themselves. Lock drunk drivers up like the criminals they are. Put criminals who use guns away for life. Better yet, find a way to keep people from doing the crap in the first place

I will repeat this one more time. I, and my weapons, are NO threat to you or any other law-abiding citizen. My weapons are properly secured when they are not on my person and I am trained in their use. The only person who should fear me is the criminal who presents a clear and present danger to myself, my loved ones, friends or other innocent citizens in my presence. If our justice system would effectively and permanently lock violent criminals up and actually come up with some ways to DETER crime, perhaps I would not feel the need to be sufficiently armed to defend myself. Come up with an effective and foolproof way to disarm criminals and perhaps I will not feel the need to be sufficiently armed to defend myself. Come up with a way for the police to prevent crime rather than simply reacting to it and perhaps I will not feel the need to be sufficiently armed to defend myself. Unfortunately, as we've stated earlier in this very thread, the police have no responsibility or protect me or my family. That makes it not only my RIGHT to do so but my RESPONSIBILITY!

You are free to abrogate your own rights and responsibilities as much as you like but you have no right to prevent me or others like me from exercising ours.

Another reason to hate Wal Mart

im willing to bet because I DO know how these companies work, as I have more than enough experience with them. I may not have experience with either target or wal-mart directly, but that doesn’t mean that my willingness to bet proves my outright ignorance. you can look to my post above as proof of both my experience and my knowledge of the industry, as there is little difference in the big supermarket industry and the big retailers such as these. sorry mate, but your consistent pessimistic attitude does not equal superior knowledge or a better justification for place of discussion.

you are little better than calling me dumb for believing there may be a difference so I choose one to dislike less than the other, and you base that off nothing more than assumption that I have no Idea what I’m talking about due to no experience or first hand knowledge, but you are VERY mistaken. I work in a near identical industry and have for years, and I now there is a difference in how other supermarkets treat their employees compared to my company and others, despite we all following generally the same line of profit driven ideals, some are worse some are better, and I believe that to likely be the case in terms of wal-mart vs tartget. if you disagree thats fine, but don’t assume others don’t know better and therefore have no place to speak because you think they are talking out of their ass.

I'm not sure I consider Flickr a "rut" at all. To me it's a medium for casually sharing work when I want to with a community of other photographers. If that doesn't carry much value for you personally, fair enough, but competition and organized clubs are not a prerequisite for owning or enjoying a dslr. I think it's pretty narrow-minded and dishonest to assume that just because those things motivate you to produce better work that people who do not participate in those activities have somehow hamstrung their creativity or are simply dangling "bulky jewellry round their neck[s]" as a status symbol.

Overwhelmingly, I take photos for my own pleasure, and my photographic skills have grown a lot in the year and a half since I bought my K-7. If your argument is that clubs and contests and other structured forms of community involvement would have grown these skills faster, sure, I don't disagree. Frankly, I'm content to explore photography at the pace and in the directions that I am, because I have a variety of hobbies and interests that compete for my time. Perhaps some day that will change, but not for now. Does this invalidate my choice in equipment? Is a P&S "good enough" for me because I choose Flickr as my medium when I want to show someone what I've been working on?

QuoteQuote:

Is P&S "clumsy" these days? I have an Ixus and a G12 for those occasions when dragging a dSLR around isn't necessary. Both are "quick on the draw" and perfectly OK for most Flickr situations.

This is the attitude I have a problem with. What exactly is a "Flickr situation"? Is that a genre of photo? Or are you suggesting that Flickr users are inherently too undiscerning to gauge the difference between a P&S and better equipment? I don't need external validation or critique from arbitrarily qualified groups of people to recognize and exploit the capabilities of a dslr, or to find value in my hobby. Or even to grow. I doubt I'm in the minority here, so please don't try to invalidate how and why other people produce and display their work simply because it's not in line with how you choose to see the world.

Quote your source?

For goodness sakes people, it's simple. If you live in a society that doesn't allow weapon ownership, obey the law. If you live in a society that allows ownership of weapons and you don't want to own one or don't want to stand to arms if threatened, then don't. If you are allowed ownership and you are willing to protect yourself, then do so within the law. Nobody here is going to change any other person's opinion on an issue like this and we are so far off the OP. Just buy a pepper spray and hope if you use it the wind doesn't blow it back in your face.

And anyone who thinks they are in mortal danger when out photographing here in Atlanta hasn't driven on I-75 or I-85 at any time of the day. That will make an atheist pray.

Wow Wheatfield,

It seems Les really had you pegged. I guess I was, mistakenly, under the impression that we were having a civil discussion. I guess being from Canada you must know how the Palestinians and Mexicans both feel. You don't, and you don't have any idea what it's like for an Illegal immigrant either. You seem to have some false impression in your mind that Mexico is some cesspool to be escaped at all costs. It's not; how condescending is that? Mexicans have a very high standard of living, high tech jobs, a huge tourist industry, a strong democracy and are poised to be the world's 5th largest economy in a generation. Sure they have poverty, about 16%, but guess what, that's about the same rate we have in the US. Sure there is an income disparity between there and the US, but the cost of living is a lot less too. A lot of Illegal immigrants I've known are just here to make money to send back home, or to save up money before going back(certainly not all). Sure they can make 20k/year working here and only 10km on an automotive assembly line in Mexico, but their standard of living there is much higher. The voluntary situation that illegal immigrants find themselves in is not remotely similar to the situation the Palestinians face. All that said, I do feel we need to have immigration reform, but with that I'm all out of troll-chow.

A lot of people use alcohol and street drugs to self medicate for illnesses that they can't admit to or pay for otherwise. Abuse is part of it too, but I've also seen quite a few people who are in pain physical or mental, who can't get treatment because they lack insurance to get it use alcohol in particular as a way to get through things. When real medical care isn't an option people do turn to whatever they can get.

I can't speak for the rest of the world but our health care system in the USA is very quick to deny people access to care if they lack money and there is a limit to what social services programs can provide. There are a lot of people out there suffering from physical and metal issues that cannot get help for treatment. So what do they do? They turn to happy hour instead of to a shrink. Also, let's face it our culture practically glorifies drinking too much as a sport, particularly when you're in college and a lot of people get addicted via exposure to that culture. For some people a couple of innocent beers or highballs after work becomes 5 then 10, then even further down the road that number just increases and increases until they're spending every night at their local watering hole getting pissed. Most of the time while these people are becoming alcoholics their "friends" are egging them along. Nobody likes to drink alone you know...

People who don't drink socially, and I know this because I am one of them for the most part, get strange looks from people. I go out with my girlfriends and I usually stick with a coke, but you wouldn't believe how many people, mostly guys I meet, who won't accept "no" for an answer when it comes to buying me an alcoholic drink without really getting into my face about the fact that I am not drinking.

Fact is I'm not much of a drinker, never have been. I don't tolerate alcohol very well. I have a half a glass of wine now and again at my folks for dinner but that's about it for me usually. I don't really like mixed drinks at all. But everyone I know likes to hit the bar at least once in a while and of course I end up going just to be social. Most of my friends know why I don't drink much, and they're cool with it actually because I can always be counted on to be the designated driver if we need one, but people who don't know me very well that's a different story.

It's been a problem when it comes to dating actually because I am not comfortable dating someone who does too much by way of social drinking, and it's actually pretty rare that I meet a guy who doesn't do a fair bit of it. Using alcohol is just a way of life for so many people. I'm not saying everyone has an issue, of course not, some people out there can have a glass of wine or a drink and it's fine, but I meet so many people these days who seem to live for consuming it that it really turns me off socializing sometimes.

Harder drugs, yeah I can see actually making a decision factoring into getting addicted. I mean you have to choose heroin or to do coke there's no way around that. But alcohol addiction starts slowly, so does addiction to pain killers. It's not quite the same thing as someone using harder drugs for recreation.

I can understand someone getting addicted to pills or alcohol a lot easier actually than someone getting addicted to say meth. Personally I think that anyone who even tries a drug like meth is stupid. There's no escape from that stuff...

I think it would be for the best if you ceased mixing these topics. I think it would be in everyone's best interest not to mix these two topics.

Your point of "What if this is vaporware" takes on a very different meaning when you mix it with the death of his mom. In that context, whether or not you intend it, you are stating that he is using the death of his mom as part of a marketing campaign.

I expect a response on the topic of vaporware all by itself would not have evoked the same level of concern and ire. I know that it wouldn't have from me.

When I first read your line "Of course very sad that his mother died. On the other hand it almost seems to[sic] coincidental." what I heard in my head was: Here is someone trying to potentially do something nice for us Pentaxians, and on his return from a grieving process, he will be confronted with this?

Frankly, I don't love that Yvon will probably read this thread when he returns.

I hope that Yvon doesn't read these messages. If he does, I hope he continues to read far enough to see the vast majority of responses.

I hope that Yvon does not associate a few painful posts with the broader Pentax community.

Most of all I hope Yvon is healing well form his grief and is able to find a measure of peace.

Lighting a Small Stage: An Example
Posted By Mike Cash

I recently accompanied my dancing girls on a trip to a local elder daycare center where they put on a performance to entertain the folks there. The center has a very small stage, which is a far cry from the much larger stage where they hold their annual recital and other large stages where they perform at cultural festivals. As we often have posts from people interested in taking photos of performances such as school plays and the like I thought that perhaps some people might find a few example shots of interest.

The stage is only a few meters wide and probably not quite three meters deep. In the past I have lighted this stage from behind the audience, but that resulted in sharp shadows on the nearby rear wall, which can only be kept out of frame by carefully shooting only from the edges of the stage...very limiting with such a small stage and with the area immediately in front of the stage filled with wheelchair-bound seniors. This time I decided to go with two flashes, one on either side of the stage, with both ceiling bounced to prevent any shadows on the rear wall and allowing me greater leeway in shooting position.

I placed a Pentax AF200T ($10) on my travel tripod to the right of the stage and a National PE-3057 ($10) on a light stand just off the stage to the left, with both as low as I could get them in order to maximize the area they covered on the ceiling. Both were fired with Flash Waves radio triggers.

The flashes as set up:

An uninteresting shot from off stage to the right, standing next to the National PE-3057. I took this shot specifically for the purpose of showing the effect of the two flashes bouncing off the ceiling. As you can see, they turn the entire ceiling into a giant softbox. Nothing special or exciting, but the setup served the purpose well enough:

And a couple of shots showing the effect of the flash setup during the performance:

All
Pentax K20D
Tamron 17-50/2.8

The end result: An adequately lighted stage and photos that don't look like they were done with flash at all (I hope that's how they look, anyway), done with simple techniques and inexpensive gear both within the reach of any of our friends here on Pentax Forums.
