Best of 2016 Before the Storm

I took this shot while driving on highway 1. This storm was coming from off shore and it looked incredible! I had to stop and take some pictures. It was cold and the sun was still coming through in areas of the clouds. The water was pretty calm and the visibility was as far as you could see. It was an unreal moment especially for Southern Cal.

Poll: K-70 or used k-3/k-3 II?

I think the K 70 sounds like the best way to go and the price is great for what you get. My only disappointment is the battery. It does not compare to what is in the K-5, K-3 and the K-1. It is the K-r battery and it doesn't last as long. That may be why the price is so good. AFter that, it sounds like a great camera at a surprisingly low price. It might be the one for me too.

Specs of K-3II

I think it sounds on par for a Mark II. They are usually upgrades on the same equipment and not a new style of camera. It should target buyers who will leap frog from an older camera (mine K5 IIs) to the K3 IIs. The idea is to tweak what could have been better and then offer the upgrade. This is probably not the camera for K3 owners. Pentax is filling the gap with this camera and making their best, better. Later this year the FF will come out and that will be the talk of the town.

I think the dock is worth the 50 bucks. You don't have to send it in and you save a ton of time. I did the update in a couple of minutes. You can learn to tweak it if you wish. This is way better than sending it out and not having it for 2 weeks.

Sigma 17-70MM Contemporary Lens out of the box and updated Firmware

Hello,
I am happy to say that I just received the Sigma 17 - 70MM Contemporary lens. It has a pretty little "C" on the lens in silver. I know this lens has been around for a while but there has been news this past week about the lens not working with Pentax cameras Shake Reduction systems. That is all true and we know that from the announcement made by Sigma last week. Many of you noticed the problem with your lens. Yes if you own this lens you need the updated firmware and it can only be done with the USB doc. You can send your lens back to Sigma and they will updated it for you.

Well I got my new copy Friday and took some pictures and I could not tell the difference between having the Shake Reduction on or off. So yes the lens was not working with the Pentax SR on the camera. The lens is still amazingly sharp and great at low light. You just don't get the help at slow shutter speeds with the SR like you do all other Pentax lenses.

I bought the USP lens doc so I could update the firmware on the lens. Who ever heard of firmware on a lens? Well it is true and today, Saturday, I updated the firmware on the lens using the doc. Wow! it worked and what a difference! A big difference! It was so simple to do and you can do other tweaks to your lens if you wish to.

I have inserted pictures for you to view. I tried to be consistent so you can see the difference yourself in the pictures. All of these pictures were hand held in to so great light. The two pictures of the pillow are before the firmware update using the USB doc.

One thing that is really cool about this lens is you don't hear it focus! Crazy quiet, you see it come into focus through the view finder. Not like my other lenses that sound like a zipper. One thing that is weird and I do it wrong every time, it zooms in the wrong direction for us Pentaxians.

I share this with you because this is an excellent lens and it needs the firmware update to work like it should with your Pentax.

New PENTAX K-50

I shoot real estate photography with a K-5 IIs. Yes it is a 16 MP camera abut I have it set at 10 MP. The files are just to large and I don't need those giant files. The 10 MP are just as sharp and do not lack. No one has every asked me for a bigger picture. It is already bigger than what they can see on a computer and what they can print. I don't want monster megapixel cameras. They just kill hard drives. I will take 300 to 400 shots on a photo shoot. I edit what I want and keep about 30 pictures and delete the rest. The sensor quality is what matters not the size of the pixels.

Why so little Pentax love?

I subscribe to Popular Photography magazine and they talk about Pentax cameras and lenses alot. That is the biggest reason I bought my K-r last month, the review was very good in the magazine and they thought it was a very good camera for the money. They said it rivals the other two big cameras for less money. They also review the Pentax lenses or after market companies that make lenses for Pentax. They loved the K-x also when it came out last year. Pentax doesn't make as many different bodies as Nikon so there is less to look at.

Thanks for your post,

David
