Had a weekend of shooting on RAW DNG on my new K3 and found the same thing when I imported them this morning :( Hopefully switching to PEF RAW will fix this...

I'm just on the way to DigiDirect to pick up my brand new K3. What am I going to do with my Kr? Also my first dSLR, it's been a superb little camera, and I'm sure I'll miss it :(.

Part of me wants to keep it as a 2nd body "just in case", and part of me thinks perhaps I could keep it for the wife to learn basic photography, but realistically I would guess that once I got my hands on the K3 it would probably get shelved into a dusty corner if I kept it...

They also have the battery grip for the K3 for $206, which is cheaper than I can even find it overseas on Adorama or BHVideo. If only I had money leftover from buying the K3...

Pentax Australia currently have 5% off (K3DEAL), however Digidirect is still marginally cheaper if you don't care about the free 8gb flu card.

Haha, I'm not really in a hurry to get mine as there is nothing really wrong with my Kr. Well, I should say there was nothing wrong until I discovered how much better the K5/K3 is. Now there is heaps wrong with my Kr :p

I already have several lenses (including the 18-55 kit lens that came with my Kr) so definitely don't need another generic kit lens. Tossing up the option of getting one of the WR lenses though, just as a "wet weather option". That said, even the body-only price is already stretching the current budget so I will more than likely just get the body.

And yes, I have been checked by customs coming in before, for a camera I purchased in Malaysia that I forgot to declare. So they definitely do look out for it.

Fair enough, I think I've been convinced to buy local

I still don't understand the GST claim though - as you mentioned, $1300 > the $900 limit, so wouldn't you need to pay back everything you claimed on the way out anyway? Which would make it not worth claiming? Or am I missing something? I'm going overseas in December, so trying to decide if I should wait till then and claim the GST, or just buy it now...

How does the claiming GST back thing work with bringing it back in when you return? Don't you have to declare and pay the GST back when you return here?

So, I'm thinking of upgrading from my Kr to a K3. Looking around to see what would be the best way to get a K3 here in Australia. Options I've found so far:

1) B&H USA, $1350 including shipping, with about $450 in bonuses (flash etc). Only issues are warranty - I'm guessing Australian retailers won't be too keen to help seeing as it's a grey import? Would Pentax Australia care? Also, being above $1000, customs will probably be interested, so may have to pay 10% GST on it unless I can get B&H to do something like split the sale in two or something else maybe a little dodgy... So that'll be about $1500 with $450 bonuses?

2) Local ie Camera Pro, Camera Warehouse etc, seems to be just under $1300 with an 8GB FluCard, not sure if there are any better deals around?

Thoughts?

Thanks :)

Also interested in the Lightscoop, can anyone confirm that it fits the K-r? Their website lists the K-x, so I would assume it works with the K-r too...

Hmm, that could be it. I can't say I ever noticed it before, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. I definitely notice it a lot now, but that could well be just because I've now noticed it...

Well, I'm back from my trip! All 4435.7km of it :) The K-r performed as good as could be expected, however it now "rattles". When I shake it, something in the camera shakes, and when I turn it from side to side, it sounds like something is moving about inside. I took the lens off, and nothing visible moves. The camera still works as advertised. Any ideas? I'm guessing the circuit board or something has been dislodged and is floating about in the case?

Thanks for all the feedback, sounds like I shouldn't have any issues. I'll probably carry a towel or something in the bottom of the tank bag to dampen some of the vibrations, and leave my K-r in my toploader in my tank bag, hopefully that will provide enough damping.

Bill_R: Would prefer not to carry it on my back. The only thing going on my back is my Camelbak :)

jogiba: Neat! How did you mount a dSLR onto the tank? I've seen some fuel tank camera mounts, but I don't know if I'd trust them to mount a heavy dSLR onto them :p

Hi all,

I'm doing a big motorcycle road trip in a few weeks with a friend, and I plan on bringing my new Pentax K-r along. Ideally I'd like to put it in the tank bag (on top of the fuel tank) as it will be well protected, and will be easy to pull out to take photos. However, I'm unsure if the vibration will be an issue with all the moving parts etc?

The other option I can think of would be to put it in the top box or the panniers, but it will be less convenient to retrieve...

Any ideas?

sigma 17-70 os hsm vs pentax

Yes, exact same conditions - in the same room, with the same light, with the cat in the same spot, in more or less the same pose. AF speed seems pretty much identical to the kit lens as far as I can tell, but for some reason the kit lens would get a focus lock, where the Sigma would hunt back and forth and eventually give up. Given better light, the Sigma is perfect.

I spoke to a workmate who has a few lenses (Nikon), and he too said that his faster lenses tended to not get a focus lock as easily as his slower lenses. I have no idea why this would be the case...

sigma 17-70 os hsm vs pentax

I just replaced my kit lens with the Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 (non OS, non HSM). It's pretty big compared to the kit lens, but smaller than the HSM version. I tried both the HSM and non-HSM version back to back, and couldn't tell any focusing speed difference between the two. The HSM version is obviously a lot quieter, I almost couldn't hear it focusing at all. At the shop I was shopping at, there was a $220 difference between the two, I couldn't justify that just to get a quieter focus and half a stop faster on the long end. Plus, the OS also uses battery even when it's off...

Brought it home and tested the new lens. In good light, focusing is as quick as the kit lens. It's faster (aperture) and has longer reach (70mm vs 55mm), and is optically excellent. In low light and with a dark subject (black cat, in my case), autofocus isn't as good as the kit lens though. My previous photos of my black cat with the kit lens have all been done using autofocus (auto-5 point), with the new Sigma it struggled even with center point focus, so I ended up taking most of the photos with manual focus. Admittedly it can't be easy focusing on a black cat in poor light, but seeing as the slower kit lens can do it, it's disappointing that my faster more expensive lens can't :(

In any case, that's the only downside I've found to it so far, but then again I haven't taken many other photos with it either!
