DCU version 5.9.5

I am looking for the download link for 5.9.5 on the macOS page. I cannot find it. Where is it?

All I can find is the link for the older 5.8.3

There is an agreement text at the end, and it says I should click a button - but it's not visible. This is on macOS Monterey with the latest Safari installed.

I eventually looked at the source code and found the link that way ("software/DCU5Updater_595(mac).zip"). Apparently, Ricoh is unable to make the simplest webpage down in a way that all browsers can handle it.

The project is missing the *.xcodeproj files it should contain to build for macOS.

And while archive.org has indexed the web site (https://web.archive.org/web/20210116204538/https://api.ricoh/downloads/), the actual zip files were not stored, unfortutely.

Adam, Apple's C compiler can cross-compile, i.e. with an extra option you can tell it to generate arm64 code even if you're compiling on an Intel Mac. If you need help with that, PM me.

To those thinking of using such a lens for astro photography:

The main issue will be that its sharpness will degrade significantly towards the edges. Distortion may be a factor, too (though independent of aperture, and only apparent in astro if you have foreground structures in the picture).

Is there serious interest for PKTriggercord for the Mac? I might be able to do it

I've now spent two days on trying to get the communication working with pktriggercord but had not much success. A had initially assumed that macOS would simply let me pass the SCSI commands from the pktriggercord code to the USB device but it turns out that macOS makes this very difficult. I need to write much more code, and I still have no idea how to do all that. So I might just give up again. I have left some questions for other devs who know may more about this, and if they help me out, I may give it another try.

I was in contact with Tomasz in 2013, when we discussed the possibility of me adding macOS support, but back then I had no idea how to do that easily (now I know). His email back then use the domain pentax.org.pl but I doubt that's in use any more. I've contacted him now again, nontheless, asking if he's share his code, perhaps open-sourcing it. If he replies, I'll let you know.

Great overview!

The "Pentax Wi-Fi & USB Tether by PentaxForums.com" is missing checkmarks for all 3 Desktop OSs.

And isn't the oft-mentioned gphoto missing in the list?

Also, would be great if you could all links to relevant websites or forum posts for the various programs you have listed.

E.g. for IT2: https://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/products/imagetransmitter2
For Pentax Wi-Fi & USB Tether: [thread]378428[/thread]
etc.

Hi Adam, thanks for pointing me to this thread. Impressive work!

I just browsed thru this entire thread (for the 1st time - I had not realized the developments in recent years, I somehow still assumed pgtriggercord would be the only way for remote control, apart from the clumsy web browser-over-Wifi solution, such as the one via the Pentax FLUcard) :)

A comment for macOS support: Instead of using the ".sh" extension you could use the ".command" extension. That will launch the macOS Terminal.app and execute the script automatically. No need for "chmod +x".

And a question: The official SDKs suggest that the "iOS" SDK, based on Swift, is only for Wi-Fi and won't run on macOS, whereas the C++ SDK only runs on desktop systems but doesn't do Wi-Fi. How did you manage to support both Wifi and USB connections in your app, then?

Have you tried Adam's solution? (See link in his post above)

However, I believe there's no manual focus control provided by the SDK.

Have you checked whether any other tool can do accomplish that? See here for a list of other apps.

Hi, I'm a Mac software developer, and much better at that than at taking interesting pictures :-D

I had previously looked into making PKTriggercord work on Macs but was lacking the understanding of using the low level comms protocols (SCSI, USB) on a Mac.

Recently, I did contract work that filled that knowledge gap.

Now I could try again to make a Mac version of what PKTriggercord does, but since I have no need for this myself any more, and since programming is my profession, I'd need some external incentive for this. Also, I only have a K-5, K-3 and K-1, and it seems that the K-3 and K-1 doesn't support this method any more, wheras the K-3 II does (which I don't have).

So I could test this with my K-5 but then would need others to support tests on other cameras. And ideally those would be having some technical skills and be telling me more details than just "it doesn't work".

If you're interested and if you'd also be interested if the outcome would not be a free product, please comment here, so that I can get an idea of the interest.

Otherwise, I assume that ppl rather use a Raspi or a Windows VM (which I did back then) on their Mac.

I did it. And it came out perfectly.

I had set the flash (AF-540) to A (focal at 34mm f/8, 200 ISO). I set it up on a tripod, and pointed the tripod to the (white) ceiling to get less direct light, and I also put the milky plastic diffusor onto it. "A" mode means that the flash uses its own sensor to decide when it's enough light. Since it was in a small room, and since the flash itself was thinking it was looking straight (I didn't twist its swivel), it would measure the reflected light (i.e. the ceiling) and shut off very soon, not draining its power too much.

The camera (K-3) was set to X, f/8 and ISO 800 in order to compensate for the reduced lighting due to the flash lighting the ceiling instead of the object directly.

With this setup, I was able to take about 17 shots at the highest shot frequency of the K-3 (8 per sec), all with the flash lighting up. After that, it kept going to shoot at the high rate, but only every 2nd shot did shoot the flash (the others were very dark because of the fixed X setting). I then stopped shooting because I was done (i.e. it might be that the flash could have kept going for longer at the reduced rate of 4 per sec).

I am very happy with the results.

I am looking for some quick tips as I need to take some effect pictures withint the next 2 hours. I googled and searched the forum here, but had no luck.

What I want to achieve: I want to pour a liquid and catch it as it free-flows through the air. This is a one-time thing, I cannot repeat it.

Now if I set my camera to single-shot (on a timer), this may be a hit-or-miss. Therefore, I want to try doing this with a continuous drive mode (high setting), and use a Flash. The flash should help with catching the fluid in a "frozen" state instead of getting a blurring effect that I'd have without the flash.

Now, here's the problem (I can use either a K-5, K-3 or K-1 II with a AF-540 or a Metz 48 AF-1):

If I enable drive mode on the camera, focus a fairly bright wall at arm's length, I'd expect that the flash would only use a small amount of its charge. Meaning I should be able to shoot 10 or more shots, each with with the flash lighting up. I did set the shooting mode to either X or P or A and chose the widest aperture (2.8). I tried a low (100) and high ISO (3200).

However, the effect is more like this:

The first 3-4 shots come with the flash, but at a rather slow rate (like 3 shots per second instead of the intended 8). And after that, the camera does a few shots without the flash, before it works again (even though I have set the "shutter release while flash is charging" to 1, i.e. off).

The flash is in the prism socket and uses P-TTL.

Any suggestions which settings I may be missing to get this working so that I get a high shooting frequency with the flash? Do I need to tell the flash to use less power somehow?

Actually: I just changed the flash to use A instead of TTL mode (and camera to X). Now, it does what I wanted. But why isn't this working with TTL? Is using A the "right way" to achieve this, or are there other ways, too?

K-1 Battery Issue
Posted By tempelorg

I don't think this is a particular issue to just my K-1, because

a) This also happens with my O-GPS 1 when turned off, and others have had this happen with theirs, too.
b) Others have confirmed that this happens with their K-1 as well, and only if GPS is enabled.
c) And yes, it happens with any of my batteries.

It is curious, though, that not all K-1 units show this issue. Mine is a K-1 II, so I assume it's of a later production date, meaning it's not just an issue with early builds of the K-1.

Still, this is not the best thread to analyse this further. There's another one here, though that focuses on the O-GPS 1: O-GPS 1 Drains Battery When Off?: Pentax SLR Talk Forum: Digital Photography Review

Didn't find a related one on this forum, though, hence why I added myself to this thread, sorry.

Do you have GPS enabled in your K-1 all the time? Only if it is, some people see a slow drain on the batteries.
