Thanks for all the replies. Certainly the banding is not as bad as the example in your post Basie and I am on firmware 1.05. I'll try again but this time I'll get the sensor warmed up first with a few 30s shots as suggested by another user.
I'm not sure how Deep Sky Stacker works as how does one get a photo of stars without long exposures. I'll read the tutorials with interest.
(Oddly the green band in my example photo is not visible on my cheap work PC monitor but is very visible on my expensive Dell monitor at home.)

Maybe it's the cold weather too? Apparently taking long exposures at below 2c causes banding!

Hi all, I'm after some advance regarding night shots with a K20D.
This evening I drove into the countryside to take few cold night shots but when I downloaded the photos may have green banding on them (mainly on the left of the photo). :(
Banding is less on ISO100 compared to ISO400 but it's still very noticeable (exposure times where approx 2 minutes).
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Matt |

Thanks for all your comments and advice - very helpful :)
I'll try to remove the ghosting from the Scimitar shot by extracting sections from one of the original photos.
I've yet to take a HDR photo I'm really happy with but this whole exercise is helping me to improve my understanding of photograph (e.g. exposures, ISOs, shutter speed) and see photographic opportunities in situations I would have previously overlooked.

As a relative beginner to the world of DSLR, I'm still finding my around with mixed success and unfortunately I've fallen pray to HDR/tone mapping. :o Hopefully it's just a phase that'll pass very soon, so I'll try not to offend anyone! But I did want to share a couple of shots.
Though trial and error, I've come to realise the key components for producing a fairly decent HDR image are light/shade (obviously), lots of texture, and clouds.
The first shot of a tank (anyone know what make?) is combined from 5 exposures. I think the textures on the tank stand out well, especially the scratches around the tracks. The second shot is of Monk Bar, York (England) just around the corner from where I live. This is a single RAW image tone mapped to exaggerate the clouds and texture.
I'd appreciate any advice relating to HDR. Many thanks :) |

Many Thanks for the link! According to the manual the top section of the camera does come off quite easily, giving access to the power switch/shutter release.
Cheers,

At the weekend my girlfriend's egg timer stopped working. Trying to look manly I immediately grabbed a screwdriver and took the timer to bits. Unfortunately the spring had unwound itself but the sunshine made the spring look very appealing and I couldn't resist but photograph it.
When I took this photo I had no intention of submitting it into a competition, but here it is anyway (attached). Ironically, something that spent it's life moving has now become very still... :p

Selling the K10D isn't an option. It was a purchase for life, they cost a lot more over here in the UK and then in the US. The camera is like new (apart from the fault); used regularly but lovingly cared for.
The top of the camera looks like it might come off without too much trouble. http://rocketri.de/wp-content/gallery/k10/s6002141.jpg
I'll see what I can do....

Hi All,
My K10D has a fault with the power switch. The problem appears to be
fairly well known (it's mentioned on a lot of DSLR forums). The camera
powers down/restarts if pressure is applied to the area around the power
switch and also after taking a preview shot.
This very intermittent and some days worse than others, but generally it
very annoying! As this is such a common problem, I wonder if anyone has
any ideas on a fix.
I found a photo online of a disassembled K10D power switch and there
appears to be 3 pins underneath which connect to a circuit as the switch
is rotated. I would assume that this circuit or the pins have become
loose. What are your thoughts?
Obviously I could just send it for repair but that can be expensive,
especially if there is a simple fix. I'm quite happy to disassemble the
camera (as I'm familiar with basic circuit board repairs) if someone
could point me in the direction of a possible solution.
Many thanks,
Matt
