Amazon Warehouse - HD DA 55-300mm PLM in Renewed condition - $278

Someone just picked it up. Smart choice! I have owned 4 versions of the 55-300 and the PLM (at least my copy) is much sharper than the older ones, and stopped down a stop, actually rivals my DA* lenses in the center at similar apertures.

I had actually almost convinced myself I should just stick with Pentax ASPC (vs Fuji ASPC, Sonly FF, and Pentax FF) - but now I am rapidly going down the hole of mixing FF (K-1) and my ASPC. I guess I can stick with ASPC for now. But boy - do I feel sick. BAD case of GAS

Wow - absolutely amazing shots, and a great video. Really enjoyed it. Have never done star photography, but this looked really cool. And you certainly sold the K-1 which I so far have been resisting..... Sigh....

Guess I was just plain out of luck. My order was cancelled last night due to lack of inventory, though I bought it while there was supposedly 2 in stock. KWB fortunately got one, so at least one of us benefitted :(

2nd time this has happened to me on Amazon. An order for a 55-300mm PLM a year or so ago was cancelled as well after a week or so.

Great price for a good lens...

It says Good Condition. My experience has been good with Amazon used items (usually returns, and condition usually reflects packaging, not the item itself - but not always. Easy to return!

DA* 300mm doesn't stop down

The result is sticky aperture blades, but the culprit appears related to something that is loose inside the lens. See attached photo - the ring at the end of the lens is loose. I was joggling the lever, and suddenly the blades were snappy again. And then I discovered the loose ring inside.
Not sure how I missed that before. Now they blades are slow once again.

DA* 300mm doesn't stop down

Just discovered my old trusted DA* 300mm completely overexposed when stopping down (i.e. using Av). Set my K3 iii at F16, it looks like it never stops down, and the photo ends up being 4 stops overexposed. Same on my old K-3

Checking the lever for the aperture, it doesn't pop closed like my other lenses, but closes down in slow motion. So not sure if it the aperture is controlled mechanically or via the electric contacts, but either way something is not working.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Guess the lens is going in for an overhaul, unless someone has an idea for an easy fix???

Item for Sale
Pentax K-01 Mirrorless (Body Only)

Asking Price
190.00 170 USD

Item Location
Charlotte (United States)

Item Description
Pentax K-01 Black body

EXIF Shutter Count: <3875

I purchased this as a backup to my K-5, but got a K-3 shortly after that, so the K-01 never saw much use. I did have a screen protector on the camera for most of it's life (you can see this in some of the pictures), which has now been removed. The only blemish on the camera is a small scratch on that rear screen - you can possibly see it in the photo of the back screen (25% in and 3% up from the lower left corner). When the camera is turned on, I can't see it.

Everything works.

Includes: Original body cap, original Pentax strap, original battery charger and cable, non-original battery, original box with all paperwork (but does not include XS40 lens!)

Middle focal length question (40 to 60mm)

I second that. My goto prime is the 31mm. My goto set is 15+31+77. I used to use the 43mm a lot - after I got the 31Ltd not so much. My favorite is probably still is the 77.

IMO comparing the 60-250 to the 77 is difficult simply because of their different purposes. I used to have a Tamron 70-200/2.8 (excellent IQ), but it hardly got used after I got the 77. So big and unwieldy - you really think twice before bringing it. Of course in certain instances the flexibility of a zoom would be wonderful. I still don't have a real satisfactory solution between the 77mm and my DA* 300.

With your choices above I would go with 31+77+60-250....

35mm Macro Limited vs. 31mm
Posted By HenrikDK

FWIW: I started with a 50mm macro, and quickly decided it was too short for me - ended up getting the D FA 100mm WR. The extra length makes a big difference if doing insects etc, For flowers and other things the 50mm should be fine.

So, for macro purposes it is wonderful. For general photography these lenses (both 50 and 100) are very sharp (not the only IQ thing to consider!), but the AF is a pain - if the AF misses it is simply takes too long to go though the whole back and forth. This was the case (IMO) with the 50mm as well. After I got a 77mm Ltd, I never use the macro for anything but macro.

So while in theory you can use the 35mm for general photography (i guess many people do) the AF would be too troublesome (just my opinion).

Breaking Out the "Crappy" Lenses (Take a Swing At Me - I can Take It)

I got a Pentax FA 35-80 a while back when i puchased a package. For the heck of it I tested and compared it to my DA* 16-50mm and some other lenses. To my surprise it produced sharper or at leaset comparable pictures than the DA* - far better than the 18-55 kit lens.

Having said that, the build quality was awful and it was very noisy. Suspect the results vary greatly with individual copies. Never used it and sold it for $25 or so (I think). Point is that some of these older lenses can surprise you!

Think of the alternatives . First stop spending time taking pictures, and work more, so you can make more money, so you can do more of the following
  • Play golf a lot and collect trophies"

  • Watch football on TV, and use it to improve you knowledge so you can win in fantasy footbal?

  • Work your garden, so you can will the annual garden show price?

  • Go travelling, so you can tell your friends about the wonderful places you have been - why else would you travel?

  • Invest in an old record player and vinyl, and listen to it for - well - just the heck of it

  • Watch cookshows and cook for your friends and family, but mostly yourself, so your doctor can tell you to loose weight and exercise more

  • Excersize more, so you can live longer, so you can take on a new hobby - like photography

Hmmm....

"55-300 on 300/f8" vs "60-250 on 250/f5.6"

You are missing my point I don't see anyone trashing the 60-250 - it is all in you head. I see lots of comments that says the 60-250 provides more flexibility, and is a great lens. So is the DA* 300. Why get all bend out of shape because someone chooses a lens differnt than what you did? Sometimes those of us who own the 300 would like the flexibility of the zoom. Bet 60-250mm owners like yourself sometimes would like a little longer reach.

Did you eat something bad for breakfast - wow. Is it really necessary to bite someone's head off for making what looks like a fairly neutral and balanced comment on the merits of the two lenses?

I long ago went through the motions of deciding between the 60-250 and the 300, and went with the 300. Have had no regrets. I have other lenses to cover the shorter ranges, and really appreciate the reach of the 300 - one of my most used lenses, and I am not a birder. The 60-250 is a great lens, but so are some of the 70-200/2.8s out there, and they have the added beneif of an extra stop, but alas - shorter range and no WR. It is all compromises. So how about presenting the merits and compromises and be civil about it - especially to new members...
