Those of us who were listening, have expected half-frame since December, to the annoyance of those who 'knew' what was coming. I never expected anything in particular about focusing, but I do know that 'rangefinder' is much more difficult than people have been thinking.

I am glad you are back, and happy to learn of positive developments in family and work! Keep the photos flowing, but do not let photography (or anything else) to dominate you. I did not know you are a lawyer, but think you are a good guy anyway.

Hey Guys,

I figured this post would fit best here. If wrong, kindly move it to where it belongs...

Anyways, I've been much inactive for the past 9 months or more. Lots happened... I lost my job, was unemployed for a few months (I'm a lawyer, so technically I cannot say I am ever unemployed, but I do work for government and I like it that way rather than private practice). I got a better gig (government) after a while and then, my second child was born!!!

My new kid is now 6 months old... happy lil boy name Matías. I take some pics of him here and there but nothing like what I did with my now 6 year-old princess.

My new job is still in the Bronx, I was trying to get out of there, but hey, it aint' that bad.

I am not really carrying cameras everyday as I used to. I actually carry a camera once every two weeks or so...

I'm more in tune these days with music, especially tape recording and such. I've been doing much vinyl to tape recording, WAV to tape transfers o things I only have in the darn cloud... I want tangible.

Not saying I'm done with the glorious hobby of photography, but its been slow for me as of late. I'll come back around. Meanwhile I am enjoying seeing your work on these forums, you guys are amazing!

Just wanted to say hi and to assure you that your bud Ed is around, busy, not sleeping well, smelling like baby puke, but ultimately happy.

Cheers fellahs!

Ed

My photographic journey has been fast and furious for the past couple of years, the last time I posted on this site I owned a Pentax KP and numerous lenses. I have also had a K10D, K20D, K7 and a K3 in the past, the K7 is the only body that I have right now. Anyway, I strayed into the mirrorless camp and bought an Olympus EM 10ii which seemed worlds away from my Pentax KP, much lighter and smaller but in fact I found it too small, so I later ungraded to the EM1ii which was a lovely camera but I became restless again and sold it all for a Sony RX10iv, thinking the all in one 24-600mm lens, 1" sensor would be perfect. The Sony is a phenomenal camera and I have taken some amazing photos but it was not a camera that made me want to use it, it lacked something, character maybe, it made everything too easy. I started to use some of my old digital compacts, Nikon P7800 and P7000 and I found myself enjoying my photography much more again and with modern software like Topaz Photo AI and Luminar Neo, I can get some great photos from those sensors. I started using more of my older cameras and picked up my Pentax K7 again and instantly I knew this was what I was missing. So I have just sent my Sony RX10iv off to MPB and have chosen a Pentax K3 (4000 actuation's) and a Pentax SMC 31mm f1.8 Ltd lens, so I am back into the Pentax fold and will not be leaving again

My current favorite do-it-all lens is a Sigma EX DG Macro 24-70mm f/2.8, It is big and heavy, making it an acquired taste. It plays very nicely with my K3, so I am willing to bear the burden. ;)

No, dairy is correct. The camera is in milk white, special processing gives us creamy bokeh, and the camera weighs the same as a pack of butter.*

Really? A new hand-winding film camera from Pentax?

Yes. To quote from the interview with Mr Takeo Suzuki: "The act of winding a camera manually is a special act that is unique to film."

As far as I'm concerned, the springs and cogs of a manual thumb wind are fundamental to the pleasure of using a film camera.

That's a complete misunderstanding of Sony.

Sony camera business is a relatively unimportant department within Sony and shortlisted to be sold out.

OTOH, Sony semiconductor (with imaging sensors as their most important segment) was promoted to strategic role. They have more than 50% market share worldwide in imaging sensors and are a multi billion dollar business.

That's like thinking Intel not giving a chip to Apple because Intel may want to build a few computers themselves ...

The D800 sensor went to nikon years ahead of Sony using it (the D800 was delayed at least a year), The D810 sensor isn't used anywhere within the indistry elsewhere (and it is a much better sensor with almost twice the full well capacity).

And the new stacked image sensors will be sold too.

I assume one of the driving forces behind the new stacked sensors (which contains an embedded image processor) is to get an even bigger share of the camera components market. It will be more difficult to adopt for Nikon or Pentax because it requires substantial changes to their firmware. But given the significant advantages, they'll do so sooner or later.

It makes no sense whatsoever to assume that Sony poses any restrictions on sensor supply to camera vendors.

I strongly disagree.

It is true that the compression scheme used by Sony is unfortunate. It can produce visible artefacts in post-processed images. However, it is reported that Sony management recognized the fact and promised to escalate the matter to engineering for a (possibly optional) solution. Not easy because it requires all raw converters to adapt.

On the other hand, most of the bits within a raw file are random for physical reasons. It can be proven mathematically that no information is lost if only their statistical properties rather than every bit are stored. And random bits be restored upon load.

It is possible although I am unaware of anybody actually doing it (maybe, I should publish a paper about it?).

But the religious beliefs that RAW must remain uncompressed (or lossless compressed) are lacking a real reason.

sRAW, on the other hand, are a complete mess and it is these formats which should be eliminated. Nikon sRAW esp. is a ridiculous format.

I requested to Yahoo to ad the Pentax K-3 to the cameralist on flickr and got an answer today. The K-3 is now on the list, so maybe the Pentax users will count again.

the numbers are not correct yet, but probably will soon:

Since I take several bird photos (actually, often it's hundreds ;)) each day, I'm starting to wonder why I've never participated in threads like this (in fact, I could do a "single in.." with just birds, FTM). It's probably because most shots are for documentation only and neither technically good enough nor interesting enough for a photography-aimed forum. But anyway, I like this one (in fact, it's already in another thread), from a series from a chance encounter on Saturday the 2nd.

They grow up so fast. And look uncannily like the milk man. by Orang J Goreng, on Flickr

(For those unfamiliar with birds: many cuckoo species are brood parasites, i.e. they lay their eggs in another species' nest and leave the care to the "adoptive parents", often much smaller birds. This is a reed warbler feeding its involuntarily adopted cuckoo young, already a fledgling. K-3, DA*300mm w/ 1.7x AFA, crop to about 20% of the original frame).
